Hi All We are currently at Lawn Hill National Park approximately 400km north west of Mt Isa. We have been on the road now for close to 3 weeks and are having a ball. We left Melbourne on a cold and wet morning with the hope of finding some good weather as we ventured further north. We travelled through outback SA along the Oodnadatta Track staying at Coward Springs for a thermal spa and The Painted Desert for an awesome sunset. The highlight of the trip so far has been the crossing of the Simpson Desert. It is an amazing place. Unfortunately one of the couples on the trip Greg and Cath Beers developed engine problems with their car 30 km's into the crossing and as a result had to be towed out to Alice Springs ... read more

We’ve had a mixed few days since our last instalment, with some very touristy activities and some food for thought about the struggles and sacrifices to settle these areas in the first place. Longreach is a very nice little town on the Thomson River, now a little bit more prosperous after we visited all its attractions. Some of these attractions are well known – the Qantas Founders Museum, for example with everything from their original hangar to a 747, which, rather sadly, although it was able to land on Longreach’s short airstrip, will never take off again. We thought the museum was quite well done, with lots of interesting exhibits and good audio-visual stuff as well. The focus is on the early days and the two barnstorming WW1 pilots who started the whole thing, rather than ... read more

Tuesday 16th August 2011 We left our site at Karumba at about 8.30am and an hour later we were in Normanton, the town we had expected to stay in originally. The town was as dead as it was on Sunday, except the few shops there were open. The general store was in one spot, the butcher 3 or 4 blocks further up the street, and the bakery up a distant side street opposite the school. At the bakery we were served by an unusual gent wearing a Queensland slouch hat. A loaf of bread was all we walked out with, the only 'special' treat they had were Rottnest type cream buns. After photos of the barramundi statue outside a motel, a model of the crocodile allegedly shot by a local lady, and of course the Purple ... read more

Friday 5th – Today we were going on an underground mine tour so the alarm was set for 7:00am. When we woke up we were both FREEZING cold so we got the little fan heater out and warmed the caravan through! It’s been months since we felt chilly enough to need to do that. Our tour didn’t start until 9:00am and it was still early so I went off and did some washing and hung it out to dry. We were at the Information Centre by 8.40 so had plenty of time to have another look around before the tour started. At 9.00am our Tour Guide, Bill arrived and ushered us along a corridor where we were issued with some orange disposable overalls, a hard safety helmet and a sophisticated belt. We donned the overalls but, ... read more

We had some pretty heavy rain during the night and when we woke up it was still drizzling. We were grateful for the brief break from the humidity that the grey clouds brought as it enabled us to have a sleep in for once. Once we were packed up we drove to the Mary Kathleen Ruins. The word ruins normally conjures up a picture of castles or churches crumbling a away, but these ruins were from the more recent time of the 1980’s. In 1954 a large deposit of uranium was discovered here and a mine was built at the site. Over the years it lay idle and reopened many times until finally being closed down in 1982. In 1983 the whole town was emptied. There are no longer any buildings but the foundation of houses ... read more
