Today we did a lot of washing before setting out to explore the township at Port Douglas and then the Mossman Gorge. We are not used to having tourists everywhere after our experiences in the Outback. The weather has been overcast with patches of sun and the odd shower at night. However it is good to be able to relax before returning to Auckland. We had a wonderful walk in the Mossman Gorge. We had been there before but hadn’t done the big walk so this time we did and it was beautiful. There was only another couple on the walk and that made the walk a lot more peaceful. There were sooo many other tourists at the actual Gorge. We like walking in peace and quiet so that you can enjoy the bush. ... read more

Back from my first field trip, finally! I will tell my story via the pictures but the main thing: I enjoyed the long awaited out-of-office-work, the atmosphere in the group was good, we worked hard but also laughed a lot (how can you else with a ukelele playing hippie in the group ) We stayed in one of the only B&Bs near our work place so bit more luxury than needed (I couldn’t even fill half of the bed) but a good shower and sleep feels good if you have to wake up again between 5 and 6 am and work until the cane toads start their weird woodpecker sound. There were also many curlews which really make a scary sound as if someone is in danger. But before these start their songs, the flying foxes ... read more

Our alarm was set for 3.30 am and we set off for Cairns Airport at 4.00 am to meet Nigel and Michele off their 5.00 am flight. Still dark, the mountain road down from Mossman to Cairns is quite hazardous but very little traffic was coming through at that time of the morning. Their flight was on time so we set off back to Mossman where they were booked in to a cabin on our caravan park. We stopped off at a viewing point on the way back and saw the sun come up over the Coral Sea, just beautiful. Before we left home Trevor put a loaf on to bake in our bread maker and it was just finished when we got back, oh the aroma. We cooked bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes and enjoyed ... read more

Now, you may have to question the sanity of two people who go on a croc-spotting tour one day and then set out the next to a famous swimming hole, but that's what we did... We left the Daintree Rainforest on Saturday morning, for the drive down to Port Douglas, a gold rush and sugar port that rose and declined, and then was tastefully revived in the last couple of decades as an upmarket tourist resort. We crossed the Daintree River again, this time in daylight (staying in the car the whole time), stopped on the coast for a quick leg stretch and made a detour inland through sugar cane fields and past sugar cane trains and sugar cane cranes out to a WW2 bomb site. Hopefully, you can read the photo of the plaque below, ... read more

Well we finally said goodbye to Darwin and the humidity which was a bit hard to take and made our way down to Katherine which of course is famous for its gorges and the Katherine River. It is also a stopping or starting place for the famous Ghan train and we were lucky enough to see it getting ready to depart for Adelaide on one of the days we were there. It was very impressive with an enormous amount of carriages.Of course we all decided there and then that we may have to consider a trip on her before we get too old.So that is something else to add to the bucket list.we stayed at the Riverview caravan Park which was very nice just outside of town and very near the other great attraction ,the hot springs.Of course ... read more

Daintree River Cruise, Queensland, Australia I took a cruise on the Daintree River after visiting Cape Tribulation. It was pretty cool to see all the wildlife, but also a bit scary after hearing all the crocodile attack stories. I sat a little further back from the railing of the boat after hearing about some of the attacks. I was able to see two wild crocodiles (one male and one female). The male crocodile had a bad reputation because he was known to have killed three heads of cattle that had gotten too close to the riverbank. Our tour guide also said that Fat Albert (the name of the crocodile) was accused of killing a man who was paddling the river in a canoe. Apparently this man was dragging a leg of lamb behind him in the ... read more

October 16, 2008 Today we went to Jurassic Park minus the dinosaurs, or at least it seemed that way. Driving north from Port Douglas we put the Jucy Van (and us) on a cable ferry to cross the Daintree River. We then drove as far as the sealed road could take us to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the sea. Captain James Cook’s boat, The Endeavor, ran aground there on a reef, hence the name Cape Tribulation. This area is called “The Daintree” and is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the oldest rainforest in the world, whatever that means. It is a gorgeous area with more of those beautiful white sand beaches that seem to go on forever. We walked the Dubuji Track and the Jindalba Track (trails are called tracks), two long ... read more

An eventful week with many highlights. In Cairns we were able to spend time with nephew Mark and wife Marlize. On Monday Mark showed us around Cairns and on Tues. around the Atherton plateau in the hinterland.Wed. we headed north to Port Douglas with camping gear for 5 days and Thurs. took the Quicksilver out to the Barrier Reef for snorkelling etc.Friday we came north to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Nat. Park.As soon as we made camp at Kimberley Beach a 1m. lace monitor ran around our tent site-fortunately no crocs.Yesterday we did the Bloomfield track-a 4wd route up to Cooktown. We had 5 stream crossings but the most daunting were the two ascents/descents-the Cowie Range being 1 in 3 gradient ie straight up/down-the landrover handled it in 1st gear low ratio-5kph!It was a long day and covered ... read more
