Monkey Magic, Macadamia's, Monopoly, Motor biking and Mulberries. All these M's pretty much sum up our trip to Gympie which was definately filled with lots of R&R... Rest and Recreation! What a wonderful trip! With a hire car - 4WD (our car was in the shop) we set off to visit friends in Gympie to spoil our children for the school holidays.... well we had no other plans or bookings anywhere... so had to do something! With a stop at the Sunshine Coast to visit cousins and family we were spoiled with a wonderful lunch. The little cousins got to play and loved it so much. They happened to be babysitting an axelotle fish for the school holidays so we got to feed it and check it out! Very unusual creature... it was a little slow, ... read more

Gympie In 1867, Queensland, was facing possible bankruptcy when James Nash discovered gold near the present site of Gympie. Today Gympie is the major provincial city and serves a population of 60 000. Gympie is located on the Mary River, 160 kilometres north of Brisbane. Friends in Gympie invited us over for the weekend. Whhoo Haaa!! Time for some chillin' and relaxin' in the country! . Driving there a car almost hit us trying to get into our lane. I think maybe we were in their blind spot, but it was scary none the less. Defensive tactical driving by the husband meant we swerved out of the way, but the quick swerve meant that the sleeping Miss Four bumped her head and woke up crying. 15 mins later still listening to the half sleepy crying kid, ... read more

We are staying in Widgee, a little rural village near the town of Gympie, with Olly's friend Mario's soon-to-be in-laws. Graham is away so it was just us and Margaret. It has been so nice for us not to be in a dorm for a few nights! Margeret is fantastic and has been so good to us. They have a lovely big place set in 50 acres of bush land with loads of tall trees and an amazing array of wildlife. It's really dry here at the moment as there's a big drought in the shire so the land is very brown and the trees are in drought-mode and so have lost most of their leaves. We were woken up by a noisy kookaburra in the morning. There were several kangaroos around but it soon got ... read more

Australia. Not so bad when you get off the beaten track! After a fairly shit first few days downunder, it was finally time to go to the ranch. On the coach from Rainbow Beach to Gympie, I got my first real look at some of the Australian landscape. This to me is where the real appeal of the country is, if you come to Australia looking for culture and history, you would be sorely dissapointed. Obviously it is a realatively new nation, but the two-dimensional stereotype of the typical beer swillin', footie lovin' Aussie is scarily accurate !! The real draw is the natural beauty of the landscape, and I should get to see plenty of it working on ranches in the outback... On my arrival in Gympie I was met from the bus and taken ... read more

Tuesday 8th November To Uranda Author Steve. Set off south from Mareeba following the Atherton road, continuing to Ravenshoe (highest town in QLD 920m) where we stopped to eat and nothing happened. Continued south, dropping down into scrubland. Road alternated between two-lane single-carriageway, and single-lane single-carriageway. If I saw a road train coming I simply stopped off-road while it thundered past. (Deb: And I just shut my eyes for all 50 metres of each one) We arrived at Undara late afternoon. The pitches had once had some rough grass but now were more or less rough packed sand. We pitched without pegging as we could not. Given the heat and the lack of neighbours we left the top sheet off the tent, with the top being just the fly-proof layer. A fair number of roos and ... read more
