THE LAST LEG – 3-5 December – Quilpie, Charleville, Toowoomba...and home Quilpie was the next town of interest. Quilpie is on the banks of the Bullo River in the outback's famous Channel Country. The town was established as a rail centre for the area's large sheep and cattle properties. Today it is better known as an opal town and, in particular, for the 'Boulder Opal'. The world's largest concentration of this opal is found in the area surrounding Quilpie. The town takes its name from the Aboriginal word 'quilpeta', meaning 'stone curlew'. We visited the St Finbarr's Catholic Church which has a unique altar, font and lectern made from opal-bearing rock. We visited the literal “End of the Railway Line”, the old Powerhouse Museum and the Mini Museum at the airport, dedicated to the old woolscour ... read more

Birdsville to SA Caravan Trip 15 September to ? December 2016 Caravan packed, house all prepared for our departure, final goodbyes to Kerrie & Gemma the night before and to Adam after he came back from work at 11.00am, we were off on our 3 month jaunt. We were travelling with Doug and Leura Cathcart, both with our off-road vans. We called Leura to check if they had left home but they were at the Toyota garage. Their temperature light was going on when the vehicle was under load. It turned out that the mechanic had knocked something off during the service they had 2 weeks previously. Their filter was chock-a-block also, so after a new filter, they were on their way. We met for lunch at a truck stop 5 minutes after passing Gatton. It ... read more

Driving into Charleville we can't but help notice how dry the country side is, there has been no substantial rain here for quite a while. Our destination is our friends new house just on the outskirts of the town set on 10 acres which provides plenty of space for their 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 horses and cluster of hens.We are heading for country hospitality and the company of good friends. Chareville has a rich past, the first Cobb and Co. carriage was built here and there are several still to be seen in the Historic house and museum,Qantas first took to the air from here.Cattle and sheep past through here on their way to Brisbane and could take as long as six months, longer in the wet season. The town has seen it's fortunes come and go experiencing ... read more

The big question in Alpha was, ‘Do we head to Tambo via the main highway taking in Barcaldine and Jericho or do we go cross country cutting off 170 k and thereby save on fuel and driving time? The unknown was the status of the shortcut as it was not clear on any of the maps we had checked. It was shown as a minor road, but it was not clear exactly what this meant. Ask a trusted local was our best option. We did not wish to repeat our Wolf Creek Crater experience from last trip so wanted to make sure the road was suitable. Checking into the Alpha caravan park, Greg asked the manager about the short cut. He said it was in pretty good condition would save us a lot of fuel and ... read more
Maybe tourists have it right – there were kangaroos crossing the road as we entered Tambo.
Short cut – single lane bitumen road

Quilpie was a much larger town than we’ve been in recently with a population of 650. Quilpie comes from an aboriginal word for Curlew. We were excited to find a supermarket but unfortunately the limited fresh produce still tastes like cardboard. I’m not sure how they’ve perfected cardboard flavoured meat, vegetables and water but they have done it well in the Channel Country. Although this place has lovely moments, generally I’m fed up with dust up my nose, in my ears and grit on everything. I never really feel clean and I’m annoyed with the heat and insects. We had a spot of rain to settle the dust and being worried about being stuck in the mud out on the lake tracks we decided to head off to Charleville to a caravan park. It was delightful ... read more

Wet, wet, wet, best describes what greeted us this morning when we rose, but pleased we survived the night with no damage to both car & camper, and very pleased we made the decision to take up option 2 yesterday. We would be in that White Cliffs pub for days otherwise! Driving and more driving today because its just to wet for anything, and we would hopefully now make it to Longreach a day earlier and finally get to crack that bottle of bubbles and celebrate the safe arrival of Isla Anne who came into our lives early on Saturday morning with Jane & Tim. A random breath test at 2:00pm just out of Cunnumulla would have to be the highlight of the day, doing lots of miles in a day is not at all exciting, ... read more

Thursday 29th September - our hopes for some calm weather were dashed - there was lightening, thunder and very heavy rain for very long periods throughout the night. Anyone under canvass would have had a tough time but we were quite cosy in the caravan apart from the noise of the rain beating down on the caravan roof. We were both a bit restless but, as we had nothing planned for the day-time, we were able to have a “lie-in”. Graham is usually up with the lark but even he was still in bed at 9:30am!!! He usually tells me how many caravans have moved on and what time the earliest one left. This morning, all the movers had gone before he got up!! The weather was very much better – just a bit of a ... read more

On Wednesday 28th September Graham was up before the alarm went off doing some of the quieter preparations for the day’s journey. We get annoyed when the early birds pack up noisily without regard for the people sleeping in so Graham makes sure he leaves the noisy things until last. Today we are heading for Charleville which, much to the amusement of our neice’s lad in Tewkesbury, is pronounced CHAR-LEE-VILLE. It must be great to have a town named after you. It was to be a journey of 316 kilometers – the longest one we’ve had since early August. There are a couple of very small towns between Blackall and Charleville but the caravan parks are more like roadhouses so we decided to reach Charleville in one day. After about 120 kilometers we hit the small ... read more

This year along with Brianna’s best fiend Grace and our new caravan “Winnie”, we decided to take an extended Easter break and see some of Central Western Queensland. The first day saw us leaving home at 5am to do the longest leg of the trip, from home to Charleville a total of 620km. We had planned on getting to Charleville to visit the Cosmos centre to go star gazing, but because of the rain, that was cancelled. The next morning we woke to a cold and showery morning. As we couldn’t go star gazing the night before we visited the Cosmos Centre this morning. The centre is well worth a visit with interactive displays and an informative movie and talk about our solar system, Sophie loved that she got to hold several different types of ... read more

We are on day eleven of our trip. Unfortunately no opportunity to do the blog until we arrived in Charleville and then needed a day or two to recover from the 4000km trip. As planned we left Perth at 6.20 on Saturday morn (20/3) thanks to Phil's organisation the day before. Car all packed up and ready to go. We are travelling in a Toyota Avalon. With our whoopie cushions, Phil's backrest and my foot rest the drive is very comfortable. The car fridge adds to the creature comforts as we have cold drink, lunches etc on tap. Music from the ipod set on shuffle makes for pleasant ambiance and a surprise or two when some songs come on - I don't think that I have actually listened to the full CDs loaded on before the ... read more
