Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hello Australia! It's been two weeks in Cairns now and I'm loving the weather. I don't want to rub anybody's face in it, but the coldest it's been here for the last 2 weeks has been +28 and let me you tell you, that's kinda chilly when every other day is over 30. Cairns is a nice little city that should be on everybodies itinerary when they visit Australia. From here I've been able to go snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, walk through the world's oldest rainforest, and chill at some nice beaches. The great barrier reef is everything I thought [View Full Entry]

I can’t quite believe that I have been in Cairns for two months, especially when I look back at my first blog entry from Cairns and remember how homesick I was. I have had a good time, experienced many new things, met some wonderful (and not so wonderful) people and learnt loads. Since my last blog I have sold raffle tickets at the local supermarket for the Lion’s club (so I am now officially a Lionette), visited Josephine Falls and another winery. I was mocked at the waterfalls because when asked why I was not going in the water I explained [View Full Entry]

DAY 349 It had rained through the night at Babinda so waking up to a soggy morning was not our most favourite, still we cannot complain too much, being professional “Sun Chasers” we have not come across too much of this wet stuff for a long while. I got out of the Wendy House, and put the kettle on, Caroline soon appeared and we sat, just enjoying the morning and the sun that was now shining. Hats off to Babinda, we think it is fabulous, what an excellent, little town and what a great little campsite there is at the Boulders. [View Full Entry]

Hello hippie camper
Hello hippie camper
Goodbye Britz camper
Having returned our campervan in Alice Springs and sold all of our camping stuff (tent, sleeping bag, chairs etc) we had taken an internal flight over to Cairns. We booked into a hostel and instantly regretted it!! Not sure if we were just missing the freedom and privacy of our campervan or whether we just didn’t like being kept awake until 3am in the morning by the group of young people playing drinking games below our window. Was this what we had in store on the east coast? Ever get the feeling you’re 20 years too late for something?? As we [View Full Entry]

DAY 348 We’ve got half a million! Dollars! Yea we wish! But no, with this blog entry today we have achieved half a million words typed on the blog. Wow we think that is amazing! Today we have just hit just over 500,000 words, so we are quite pleased with my achievement. Today is no ordinary day, today is my birthday, and Caroline said something puzzling yesterday, she said “sorry your birthday is not going to be very exciting”. Mmmm, lets just consider that, NOT VERY EXCITING, well we have been lucky enough to be able to have a year off [View Full Entry]

DAY 347 Again I was up at silly o’clock, pottering about and Julie was up and walked past me with the kettle, which she handed to me and said she was going to meditate and then go for a walk up the hill, though all I wanted was a cup of my favourite brew. I padded around the place as quite as a church mouse as I didn’t want to disturb Julie and then went outside and sat on the veranda in the morning sun. Caroline “Surfaced” at about 07.30 and we all sat around have tea and toast and talking [View Full Entry]

Apologies for this, bit one of our diligent readers (The Wallaby wanderes-Smart Arses) pointed out that our last blog entry “The last frontier” had some of the text missing. Well it wasn’t for you to guess the ending but a mistake on my behalf (Andy’s half) I have corrected this know so you can read the ending if you want to. Sorry about this. Andy [View Full Entry]

DAY 346 Today’s the day that we leave Cairns and continue our journey South, Andy as usual was up early this morning, I was up just after 7.00 but Andy was already outside packing the trailer, so I set about getting sorted out inside, little did we know that we would change our plans. It again is quite warm this morning and very humid, but it is overcast, I strip the sheets and pillowcases etc from the bed in order to wash them and hang them to dry ready for Julies return. Andy packed the trailer, our sleeping bags and [View Full Entry]

DAY 345 I was up a little earlier this morning, just after 7.00, I must have had a good nights sleep, but still well after Andy who seems to be getting up earlier than ever. I find Andy outside beetling around with the truck and trailer getting bits and pieces ready for the off tomorrow. I find out, as crazy as he is getting up so early, that he sneaked off to the car wash place just down the road to use the vacuum cleaner to finish cleaning the inside of the truck. We have breakfast, and a little bit [View Full Entry]
