Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 313 The Three States Another day in paradise dawns with a cup of tea on the agenda. We don’t have a lot to report today, after breakfast we popped down to the Mail Delivery Centre in Cairns to pick up a parcel for Andy then we popped into Woolworths for some grocery necessities. Basically we are now planning our trip up to Cape York, so we are going to cook some food ready to freeze and then will transfer into our fridge freezer for the journey, it just makes things a little bit more convenient for those days when you [View Full Entry]

DAY 312 I am getting used to Andy bringing me tea in bed again, it is a habit that I like him to keep up with, but I am sure it will all change when we are back out on the road again. We are up and about getting ourselves ready to have another walk today, still in the Barron Gorge National Park, but we want to do a different section, by the time we leave Cairns we expect to have walked most of if not all of the available tracks. So the Camelbak is full of fluid, we have a [View Full Entry]

DAY 311 Today is going to be a good day, why? Well, for the first time in a long time I am going shopping, while I leave Andy to have a relaxing few hours while I too have a few hours of freedom. The normal start to the day, Andy brings me a cup of tea, neither of us feel any effects from our walk yesterday, we must be getting fitter. However after a shower and some breakfast, I grab the truck keys and bid Andy goodbye as I head to the DFO. The DFO, which we have come across in [View Full Entry]

DAY 310 Introduction: Hi followers of Kangaroojack’s Australian adventures, may we first apologise, about the title of today’s blog, but I am doing this in the aid of a bit of research or fun really. I have started to read the complete blog again whilst here in Cairns, as we are living a bizarre existence, fun for sure, but just a bit bizarre and you tend to forget things, people and places way back on the adventure, so I thought it would be a great idea to read every blog entry again, just to refresh my poor old memory. As Kangaroojack [View Full Entry]

How Much? Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
DAY 309 It had been a warm night, but the ceiling fan did its best to keep us cool, just before 6.30 the time my alarm was set for I woke up, I found it amazingly easy, considering we have had so many late nights and late to get up in the morning, it must have been my sub conscious making sure that I did not oversleep. I have a Skype session set up for 7.00, and afterwards we will leave for Port Douglas, so while Andy gets the kettle on, I jump in the shower, get dressed and soon I [View Full Entry]

Cairns - Paradise! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Cairns...paradise found!! We started off the day by sprinting to the airport after a 2 hour nap from 5am-7am and scarfed down McDonald's breakfast like it was our last meal. I don't care where in the world you are, if you don't like McDonald's brekky, there is something wrong with you. Cut to us getting on the plane, eyes barely open from lack of sleep and egg mcmuffin food coma. First thing we notice when we sit down is that the plane seats have tv's in the back of them. Second thing we notice is that the only channel you could [View Full Entry]

Dive Day!!! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Oh man, Tuesday was so epic it'll be hard to get it all in one go. We shot out of bed at 6:45am so excited for our dive we couldn't sleep. The bus picked us up at 7:30 and whisked us off to the docks to get us to our dive boat, the Silver Swift. Ho-ly crap. This thing was a frickin floating Hilton. As we started to take off toward the reef on a perfect sunny and windless morning, we had hot tea, focaccia sandwiches, and muffins as the dive masters briefed us on the three dives we were going [View Full Entry]

Hello from Cairns Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
We are enjoying Cairns, after arriving here yesterday afternoon. We called into Paronella Park once we'd left Mission Beach. http://www.paronellapark.com.au/ A Spanish immigrant, Jose Paronella, who made money first by working on sugar cane farms, then buying and selling farms, had the dream of building a castle. He bought an acreage containing the Mena Falls, in the 1930's, built a home for his family and then got to work building his 'castle'. He was a clever man and a good worker, first building a very very long flight of stairs up the hill so he could carry his building materials up [View Full Entry]

DAY 308 We made a comment the day before yesterday, that our days were not very exciting at the moment but a message from Helen at Woodstock reminds us that, like her, there are probably many others longing for a day like ours, just lounging around, reading, catnapping and the occasional walk (a day without sheep), so we should not take it for granted that things are not terribly exciting, I have to admit that it is a real pleasure to be able to do these things and make the most of it before our year is out and we will [View Full Entry]

DAY 307 After all the fantastic information we had received from Ann at QPWS (Queensland Parks & Wildlife Services), and doing the Copperlode Dam walk the other day, see blog day 304 07 09 2009 (Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades) we wanted to get some more walks in, so had loosely decided on a walk that started at Wrights Lookout, just beyond the Barron Falls Lookout, and went on to the McDonalds track. The information said it was a 4.7 Kilometer walk each way, to the Douglas track, and is a historic track (we are not certain why so historic). Approximately [View Full Entry]
