Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well...so...yeh... Rain!!! darn rain, ok, well it hasn't exactly been raining all of the days but it has rained rather a lot. However apart from talking about the weather all of the time, it is also quite hot, and when the sun is shining its rather pleasant. On the whole Brisbane is quite a nice city, its not full to the brim of endless things to do, but is on the right side of busy in my opinion. There is no beach here, but they have a man made swimming complex on the south-side of the river which makes for a [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, Greetings from Brisbane!. We arrived enthusiastically here early on the 14th June, a Sunday so everywhere seemed quiet and calm. We had booked our hostel before we left and were instructed to get off the airport train at Brunswick Street, unfortunately though the station was called Fortitude Valley and it took us a few train journeys to get to the right place, following that the hostel had given us their office address and we spent ages lugging our backpacks up and down an area called Spring Hill looking for the place. Eventually we arrived at Valley Verandas Hostel and [View Full Entry]

Settling in So, I was staying at the Billy Tin Backpacker Hostel on George Street and like other backpacker joints I’d previously stayed in there were a lot of-long termers. In amongst all this were the other the transient folk from Germany, France, Korea, Taiwan who were working as slave labour in fruit picking. Or the Germans/French who were out here and were so bloody young it was painful. It was a strange environment to be in; half-student house, half-hostel, with everyone cooking in the kitchen of an evening and DVDs/TV being shown constantly. You then saw the sa [View Full Entry]

So the time came to pack up our rucksacks and hit the road again. We had our dinner on our last night in a lovely Irish bar, steak mash and gravy of course, and said a final farewell to Sydney. It was a strange feeling leaving ‘home’ again and we were a little sad, having made some great friends and really settled in, but we were really excited to start the next leg of the adventure. We decided that the best way to get to Cairns to catch our next flight would be an almighty road trip. We collected our rental [View Full Entry]

Checked out Parliament House the over day too. It's kinda wierd living here for a couple of years and not actually going to see the Parliament House but i'm sure there's millions of people here who can't say they've been. It was cool to soak up all the history as well. [View Full Entry]

Brisbane in a Day. I think Newcastle is such a great airport to fly from. Easily accessible, easy to park car and easy to check in and get to the gate. I think we accomplished all, together with coffee in hand in just 10minutes. We spent the quick 1 1/4 hr reading and snoozing and contemplating the plethora of key developments up the coast. Wouldn't like to own property there with imminent sea level rise. We waited patiently for the lurid green campa from Jucy. Self considered possibility that campa rates are low as they simply don't employ enough staff. [View Full Entry]

Getting flu and a secondary infection of bronchitis was not the smartest thing to do - but I have done it. Stout hearted to the last I shall ignore the doctor's dire warnings of death by pneumonia and play the fair maiden relying on my partner to carry the bags and deal with all the aggravations caused by airline staff and the like. I have visions of reclining on the bed in the camper van whilst being chauffered around but probably not going to happen! Checking in online has proved a bonus and earned us another 30 minutes in bed in [View Full Entry]
