Geo: -25.8384, 133.3 The further south we are heading, the colder it is getting. Oh well I guess it is winter. We seem to get up early and still can't leave before 8 am. We are off to Kulgera caravan park. We stayed there on the way up north so I guess its a reality check that we are on our way home. The days are still fairly nice but the nights are getting a bit chilly. As our car has been playing up again we are driving slower than Jen & Nat who have no trouble doing the speed limit. This does increase our time driving with not as much free time as our travel partners. Arriving at Kulgera and booking into the park we were greeted at the park entrance by Jen who was ... read more

As if the cows weren’t enough we woke to a flock of galahs squawking their hearts out. We hit the road again and grabbed a coffee at Kulgera. Nice pub, rubbish coffee. It’ very important that these little towns have a differentiating feature, like the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta. In the case of Kulgera it is the first and last pub in the NT and it has a Hills clothes hoist filled with old running shoes. People come from miles around to ponder and photograph (see photograph below) it from the viewing platform. Driving in the NT was a change. The first road sign said the maximum speed limit in the NT is 110ksph unless designated otherwise, the next one is a speed limit sign for 130kph. By the side of the road the Government has ... read more

Geo: -25.8384, 133.3We left Pootnoura about 8.30. This seems to be the norm for us oldies. Some grey nomads get going about 6 am but we soon pass them on the road. Today is sunny and therefore lots of flies. We stopped at the border for some photos and fuel at Marla. We arrived at Kulgera about 1.30, set up camp and made a beeline for the showers. It's been awhile since we have had one, maybe that is why the flies are hanging around. Jen & I went to the ladies and found it in the stages of being renovated. We had nowhere to hang clothes or towels and had to stand in communal area to get dressed or fight with the cold shower curtain. Of course the guys had a wonderful shower with their ... read more

21st November - 22nd November 2009 Kulgera Roadhouse and the South Australian border Stayed my last night in the Northern Territory at the Kulgera Roadhouse campground. It was, if you will believe me, freezing! Driving around with a QLD number plate I usually get the 'your just a soft Queenslander' response when I say how cold it is. I wasn't born in QLD, I grew up near Sydney so if I say it's cold, believe me, it's cold! It wasn't so much the temperature, it was the wind. It was the type of wind that goes right through you to your bones. Spent the night cosy inside my van as there wasn't much going! Up early the next day I started my journey south towards Coober Pedy. The border crossing from Kulgera is only 22 kms ... read more

Day 8 6/8/2009 Oodnadatta to Kulgera NT Track very very rough in places - sharp rocks and in other places very sandy, corrugated with bull dust. We were glad to reach Marla today and get off the dirt and I think even the truck gave a sigh of relief. Marla is the junction of the Stuart Highway and the Oodnadatta Track and consists of a Service Station complex of a pub, Post Office, supermarket and takeaway all in one. We stayed at Marla for a while trying to update the blog page but the machine there would not allow uploading of files so we gave up. I did manage to catch up on emails and check the bank so all was not lost. We travelled as far as Kulgera which was the first place we came ... read more

Day 157 Wednesday 06 September 2006 Kings Canyon to Kulgera (359 km) We just drove today. Duane is kept busy doing his puzzle book that we bought him in Alice Springs as he is officially on holiday now as he has completed his Distance Education units. Kiera is continuing to draw her pretty pictures for her kinda book. We are staying in a roadhouse/come caravan park and we where the only ones here but others having started to roll up now. Duane is keen to play a game of billards later. Not much here except flys and very windy. Diesel is 1.72. Kiera and Duane are busy playing on the outback playground and they also went in the pool but absolutely freezing. We have gone back to jumpers and jeans tonight as it is cold. Graeme ... read more
