Alice Springs to Kings Canyon Standley Chasm was our first stop on the way into the West MacDonnell Ranges, here we found ourselves wandering along a track over white rocks surrounded by fiery red rocky cathedral walls. We came to a fork in the road, taking Namatjira Drive towards Ellery Creek Big Hole. The waters here were far too cold for swimming, but boasted a sandy creek fringed by gums around the large waterhole. Neil Hargrave lookout was our free-camp for the night, with an abundance of mice we had been warned of in our travels north. The night tested every feather of down in our sleeping bags as we have struggled to acclimatize to Australian winter temperatures, having avoided the winter for over 2 years! Morning light came and the bloke who camped nearby ... read more

Up with the Sunrise to make our way to Watarrka probably better know as Kings Canyon. The first challenge of the day was 'heart attack hill' nicknamed so for a reason! But for the first time on my travels, I was actually able to keep up with the guides. Either I'm getting fitter (unlikely) or the guides are getting slower (also unlikely so what's going on?) We made it to the top and the view was truly something else! I have seen so many breathtaking views this year and yet I'm still finding scenery that amazes me and looks unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm a firm believer that it's a small world but there sure is a great deal to see in it! Through the gorge we went and on the waterhole. The water ... read more

All our pictures are here Day 1 - Kings Canyon Our plane arrived early on our first day which was a nice way to start the trip! The weather was beautiful and the sky was bluer then I've seen it for awhile - with no clouds during our stay! So we headed straight for the car hire desk and picked up our spiffy Toyota Seca which was brand new and way too fancy for my liking. It had six gears and the windshield was so slanted I couldn't see the front of the bloody car, so it took me a few dodgy parks to work out how far or close I was parking to things. It was lunch time so we stopped at the Ayers Rock Resort for some food. We had a massive lunch and ... read more

So this morning we were up around 6am to go hiking at Kings Canyon. I wasn't that happy to be up because I'd been kept awake by mice all night. There were loads in the kitchen when we were cooking and eating dinner, and I'd chosen a tent right next to the kitchen. When I went to bed I noticed a mouse had chewed through the wrapper of a museli bar I'd left on the bed. As I got into bed I wondered if I should get rid of the other museli bars in my bag but I couldn't be bothered. I did move the bag they were in closer to me so I could protect it in the night. So all night long I was woken by the scratch of the teeth of the mice ... read more

Day 69 To the craters!! There were 5 we could see ranging in size form 150 meters wide and 15m deep to 7m wide amazing to see what a 44kg piece of rock will do at speed. We plod on after a short 2km walk though, kings canyon here we come. Well actually not quite, I guess first if you want to save 150km of your drive you have to deal with a teeth rattling road, with speeds only hitting 20km/h for a bit. Ouchies. But then we hit paved roads and back up to 110 and were moving well. We push straight to the camp site to ensure a good spot, not that we are that picky but dammit I want to sleep on grass. So we slept on grass to the tune of 51 ... read more
