Today is the day that we built the whole itinerary of this trip around! Today we travel on our second iconic train journey of this adventure, the first, of course, being the Tranzalpine Express in New Zealand. But, today is a train journey on another level altogether.........today is the mighty Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs! This train experience actually travels all the way from Adelaide to Darwin, but we were 'onot' going about half way, about 1,000 miles, to Alice Springs, pretty much the centre of Australia. The train only leaves Adelaide twice a week, hence our need to fit the itinerary around it and it would be a journey for us that woud be taking around 26 hours and, what's more, although we were travelling almost due north, somehow we would also end up ... read more

Alice Springs is nestled in between the McDonald Ranges. A mountain range of 9,709,870 acres. The range is 400miles (644km) of parallel ridges, which run east and west of Alice Springs. The highest peak is Mount Zeli, 5023ft (1531m). The ranges were named after Sir Richard Macdonald, who at the time was the Governor of South Australia. They were named by John McDouall Stuart, whose expedition of April 1860 discovered the mountain range. In 1872 William Whitfield Mills, from Plymouth, Devon, England, finished laying a 3200km overland telegraph line from Darwin to Port Augusta in South Australia. The southern Entrance to Alice Springs is situated at a water gap in the McDonald ranges. W.W.Miles named this gap Heavitree Gap, after the school he attended in Plymouth. Nowadays it houses the main road and railway. The Heavitree ... read more

Alice in the Territory, the hotel we stayed at, kindly allowed us to check out late at noon today. They understood we had an issue with our luggage since the bus is scheduled to leave at 7:15 pm. Similarly, people at The Rock Tour office, next door to the bus station, allowed us to store our luggage there as we wander around Alice Spring until it’s time to get on the bus. That’s a whole lot better than the treatment we got from the owner of The Outlook Cave in Coober Pedy! Sunday in Alice Spring is slow. Most places are closed, but a few places we had wanted to go to are open, but we cannot get to them: they’re too far to walk, buses don’t run today and we were not able to “hire” ... read more

This was supposed to be a day of rest, but with some further exploration of Alice Springs. The temperature is again supposed to be in the high thirties, so we decided to get out fairly early and get back to the resort to hang out at the pool later. How do you know you’re getting older, or maybe smarter? When you take a cab to the top of Anzac Hill so you don’t have to walk up! Mind you, part of the reason was the heat. Anzac Hill commemorates Australia’s participation in all wars. It overlooks the town and is quiet so one can ponder why there are wars, and why democratic countries are always ready to get involved to help other nations. For us, it re-enforces our belief in this, since we missed Remembrance Day ... read more

Three days on The Rock Tour. Outback. Desert. Camping. Hikes. Lots of wildlife. These past few days were everything we expected, except the real roughing part. As in helping cook and clean up. Unclean swags and sleeping bags. Heat and more heat! Sweat, dirt. Overall though, well worth the experience with great young folks to enjoy it, and our great trip leader Geordie. But make no mistake, this is a pastime for younger folk, especially the hikes! Departure was Wednesday at 5:40 am. We sat at the front of the bus, a Toyota Hiace with about a 20-passenger capacity, towing a trailer with all the camping gear we would need, stove, pots, swags, sleeping bags, and everyone’s luggage, etc. A swag, by the way, is a waterproof canvas zip-up bag with a small mattress inside, into ... read more

Today we got to see what the Outback looks like, at least for the area between Coober Pedy and Alice Springs. The next few days will be quite different, as we explore Uluru (Ayers Rock). Coober Pedy got a lot of rain and thunderstorms overnight. Lots of puddles all over, since it’s pretty flat here. We heard several smaller landing strips are closed until the runway water evaporates. Evidence of the rain is all over for the first 4 hours of our bus ride towards Alice Springs. We heard of power outages and Internet interruptions. But everybody survived! The landscape today varies a lot. From trees to no trees, from rock to soil, from brown soil to red soil, from fenced grazing lands to unfenced areas. Several times our bus driver needed to slow down for ... read more

If you are a regular reader of my blog you may have read “The Drive Down”. The last sentence of that blog said, “I'm hoping that for the rest of the trip we can find free sites and not have to pay to camp again!” How wrong I was!! After we went to Uluru and Kata Tjuta we decided to visit Kings Canyon. Neither of us had ever seen a Canyon and even though it wasn’t exactly on our way we thought it would be worth a visit. We left the campsite (still free) midmorning after planning to drive to the Canyon in one day, camp then spend the next day hiking and exploring. Unfortunately, we never made it to the Canyon. We had arrived in the National Park where the Canyon is and our van ... read more

Our next main stop was Alice Springs and then Ayres Rock. However on the drive down from Kakadu we stopped at a few different places. Our first stop was Edith Falls. A waterfall flowing in to a big pool and a hike that takes you up to the start of the fall. We spent most of the morning in the bottom pool then decided to do the climb to the top one. It was a circular walk so after choosing the shorter route up, we started climbing. The overall result was worth it. There were two big pools at the top and another little Falls. We swam and read there for hours before doing the rest of the circle back. On the way back we saw our second snake. A tree snake, which apparently won't kill ... read more

I've decided to attempt a travel diary/blog to document our upcoming holiday in Thailand. Mostly this will just be for me and the boys, so we will have something to help us remember all of our crazy adventures since we are going to be away for 4 weeks, and I plan on cramming as much sightseeing into that time as possible! I also thought it might be nice for our family and friends to be able to follow along with what we are doing if they are interested. I have no expectations that this little blog will get any viewers other than our own Mums, but it will be nice to put something out there in case others are interested, and it will hopefully avoid the flooding of everyone's Facebook feeds! So 4 weeks in Thailand. ... read more

Geo: -23.7004, 133.881It seems ages since the last blog. We spent 3 lovely warm days in Mataranka, swimming in the thermal pools. The caravan park had certainly filled up since our last visit a few weeks ago. On Wednesday the 7th we were going to stay at the free camp Newcastle Waters but after seeing that it was on a hill covered in dolomite we decided to drive on to Renner Springs and stayed in the caravan park there. What a surprising place this was on the highway. It is still a working farm but caters to the travellers. Being lazy we decided to eat tea at the pub. Still can't get used to country meals. Friggin huge. We still have the cold wind and unfortunately it is a head wind. Not great for towing a ... read more
