Soon after school term resumed I flew up to Alice Springs for my tour with WayOutback. The local Shuttlebus dropped me at Alice Lodge Backpackers, who had booked my tour, and were extremely helpful. After I got settled into a comfy little dorm I met up with a lovely 5W member who took me to her home for lunch. I discovered there was an Aboriginal festival happening that weekend, which I sadly missed; still she took me to a gallery to view some gorgeous paintings by local people. Later I walked into town searching for food for supper, passing several groups of Aboriginal people clustered along the dry river banks. The following morning I woke far too early, having forgotten to alter my phone clock... Melbourne time change to daylight savings, which doesn't happen in Northern ... read more

As we headed west on the 17thSept we had no idea we would be gracing the town of Alice again so soon, but here we are updating another blog from the centre! Of course, there is a story behind the backtracking, but first we’ll fill you in on our big adventure out & back again…. The first couple of nights away saw the usual “restless rangas” as we got walked all over, meowed at, our slightly stressed rangas battling to get used to the whole bus idea again. But they were little champs at settled back into the routine of walking on leashes & being confronted with a new camp every night within a couple of days. I think we all forgot how cramped the little bus bed is on a two-cat night!! Out into the ... read more

The red centre of Australia is not an easy place for neither man nor creature to live. Water is a major issue, and unreliably seasonal out here. A supply of food is difficult as well which is why our Aboriginal people wandered from place to place throughout the seasons. Reptiles seem to have survived here, and the variety is quite large, both snakes and four legged reptiles in quite a variety of breeds. The Alice Springs Reptile centre, right in town, has quite a variety of snakes, lizards, skinks and geckos, all native to the red centre. The great thing is you get to learn how to handle the non-venomous lizards, and how to not touch the venomous snakes. You do get a chance to wear an olive python, and most guests did do that. They ... read more

This is certainly a strange place, central Australia. Underground people at Devils Marbles, then just a few ks down the road towards Alice, Wycliffe Well where there is a concentration of alien contact, maybe even abductions, and Aileron where people are giants if the artwork is to be believed. We didn't stop for any great time in this dangerous region, but kept the foot to the floor and duly arrived safely in Alice Springs. Although we knew it was outback, we had no concept of the appearance of the town. So one of the early stops was up ANZAC Hill which is both a memorial place from WW I, and a good view point for the Northern Territory's second largest town. About 28,000 people live here, but I am not sure quite where, except to say ... read more

The time has finally come when we get the wheels rolling onto the next leg of our adventures! Boris is packed, fuelled, the bar’s full, larder stocked & one last job to update this here blog & then cheerio! Heading westwards then looping around to Kings Canyon and then onto Ayers Rock. After which we hope to get Boris into Molly’s old station “Old Andado” for a week or two. Road condition dependant……but by the next blog you’ll know if we made it or not! Since our last blog we’ve had a busy little stretch, first main event being the Finke Desert Race. The desert turned on a treat weather-wise & we camped out under a gazillion stars (with a gazillion other people) for two nights. Taking the south highway we turned left at Kulgera, along ... read more

Friday 16 August Today is meant to be a warm day, the predicted temperature is 34 degrees C, so we are up early, grab breakfast and head to the post office to pick up some more mail that has been sent to us and then we drive out to the Ross Highway with the full intention of making it to Arltunga ruins. We have plenty of water on board and have packed some lunch, the day is not so warm yet, it is cloudy and the wind has a fair chill to it, so much so at the first stop of the day, Emily Gap, we are happy to be putting long sleeves on to keep the cold wind off. The gap is quite busy with visitors, a few people would appear to be having an ... read more

First thing on the Monday morning Andy took Jack (The Landcruiser) to the welders so that we could have the sub frame welded up in preparation for the new tow bar, at that stage we did not know who would be paying for it but whatever happened we still needed the work carried out and whilst we were waiting for people to argue, we were sitting around gathering costs. Our week was still being consumed by the tow bar drama so we could not really go very far but late on the Tuesday afternoon we visited the Old Telegraph Station, which has a varied history attached to it, opened in 1872 as a Telegraph station played a very key role in the development of Australia reducing the isolation of Australians from the rest of the world, ... read more

Sunday There is a main event here on Sundays and that is free pancake's! Joy, we headed off to the larger barbecue area in the main section of the caravan park, there is already a long queue of people with mugs and plates at the ready. We join the queue and fortunately it does not take long to go down. It looks like the guys making the pancakes have done this before, probably a hundred or so times before, they seem to have such a good routine going I feel that I need to make sure I am promptly ready with my plate otherwise my pancake my hit the floor and I don't want to ruin the efficiency of this magnificent breakfast feast. They advertise the mans record stands at 13 pancakes and the ladies at ... read more

Saturday 10 August We decided to dedicate this blog to our Dads, because of their strong connections with the Transport industry throughout their careers so John (Caroline's Dad) and Derek (Andy's Dad, passed away in 1994) this one is for you. The weekend arrived and nothing was going to happen with the tow bar saga which meant we could still not move the trailer, so we decided to make the most of the weekend and be tourists again, although I am feeling very much like a local right now. First on the list was the National Road Transport Hall of Fame which was back out of town on the way to the airport. This had been recommended to us by a number of people as worthy of a visit, and let me tell you they were ... read more

Because we have been quite busy throughout the week, we have not chosen to write a blog everyday to cover what we have been doing, otherwise you would be bored, so I am going to do my best to give you a précis of what has been happening while we have been in Alice Springs. Early in the week it seemed like everyone has a problem, I have seen several vehicles loaded onto recovery vehicles and taken away from the camp site or dropping off the occupants in accommodation and then taken away, I feel sorry for them and wonder how far away they were when their misfortune struck. As our week went on it became evident that we were incredibly lucky not to have befallen the same fate to arrive in Alice Springs on a ... read more
