When I told everyone I was going to Australia, I received countless emails and Facebook messages telling me to be careful when I travel to Australia and to watch out for all of the things that can kill me—jellyfish, sharks, spiders, snakes, etc. In fact, when I stepped off the plane in Sydney, the first thing greeting me in the terminal was this huge display that stretched the entire walk from the gate to customs of everything in the water in Australia that could kill you. It’s ironic then, that what’s really going to kill me in Australia is my own cooking. I was pretty lucky growing up, in that both my parents are fairly good cooks, so I never really had any need or interest in learning how to cook. I do make a mean ... read more

After a very busy day yesterday, decided to go for the easy option today so I took a ferry from Central Wharf In Sydney to Manly. The ferry takes about twenty minutes, it was quite windy and a little bit rough but not too bad. Manly is located seven miles from Sydney and is a very popular sea side destination. There is a main beach where there was a lot of surfing taking place, then further on an enclosed pool which is filled with seawater. Further along is Cabbage Patch Beach. The sand was golden and very fine. I believe the name Manly was given to the place after one of the early founders met an aboriginal man who he thought was manly, hence the name!!?... read more

Woke at 06:30 - unheard of! Another a sunny but windy St Patrick's Day. Went to Scruffy Murphy's for 10:00 as couldn't wait for sunday dinner we'd seen whilst walking around. The music was an Irish ear bashing - good and certainly wakes you up. Most of the town centre was closed for the Parade from George street. Just had to call in for coffee and carrot cake whilst we decided what to do. Went down Pitt Street again with the aim of getting to the harbour bridge, with a detour via the cider tents in Hyde Park and through the botanic gardens. Found an old style pub under the bridge and whiled away a few hours with a couple of pints and local chat outside. Then back home through The Rocks area and up Phillip ... read more

Woke at 8:00 to a sunny day forecast to be 29 degrees. Had tea and the second hot cross bun loaded with butter - yum. Got out for 10:30 and decided to walk up Oxford street to get brunch where we had a 3 years ago on our long walk to Newtown. We found Mickey's cafe / restaurant near Paddington Town Hall. I had a lovely roasted beetroot and lentil salad and Brian had a bacon and egg muffin. Had come round a bit by lunch time. Then walked back to the Meriton Kent Street through the area of old Victorian houses, some converted to boutiques and galleries, passing the Royal Hospital for Women Park. Giggled at the 'missing dog' poster. We re-joined Oxford street near the Victoria Barracks passing the fountain and bars in Taylor ... read more

Arrived in Sydney yesterday, got from the airport to the hotel in less than one hour and it was rich hour. Trains were very efficient and it was only a short walk to the hotel. It's in a really great position literally two minutes to the ferry and a boat ride to Central Sydney which takes about five minutes. Decided to take the ferry across, arrived at Central Wharf which is where all the ferries run from in Sydney harbour. Walked round to the Opera house which is five minutes from the ferry terminal, was hoping to find something to go and see there but there wasn't much on this week. The roof of the Opera House which was designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon was tiled much to my amazement. Fantastic piece of architecture. ... read more

Fabulous! arrived in Sydney virtually on time at around 07:00, got through security and eventually found the new (?) shuttle train station. Bit pricey AUS$ 33 to go 5 stops, but easier and probably cheaper than a taxi. Got to Museum / Hyde Park / Elizabeth Street ok and walked to hotel - cloudy, warm 23 and occasional spots of rain, but didn't care. Got to the corner near the hotel, and found that where we'd had breakfast on previous holiday had been renovated to - guess what? a Pie Face! Fab, can see us using that often. As expected our room wasn't ready on the 54th floor until 14:00, but they had one ready on the 24th, which we viewed and decided to take. Glad we did, because whilst having a toastie and coffee in ... read more

Hello, This is our last update about Australia. Once we left Rick and Leeanne's house, we flew to Sydney for a few days as our flight to Bangkok left from there. We thought we would elplore some of this famus city whilst we had the oppurtunity. When we arrived we put on our walking shoes and took to the streets to explore. We left our hostel in King's Cross and headed for the harbour area. We weaved in and out of some houses, made it to Elizabeth Quay, only to discover that we couldn't get to the main waterfront attractions. So we re-traced our steps and found the beautiful Botanical Gardens. These are a set of large gardens that are free to walk in and go from formal flower gardens, to tropical fern gardens and then ... read more

Everyone remembers their first moment on campus. That second that they set foot on where they will be studying for an extended period of time. While I found college life an easy adjustment, it was still a change from high school, even though my high school and college back in the states are roughly the same size at 2000 students. So you can imagine how I felt last Monday, when orientation started for new students (remember that it is the first semester here in Australia), and all of the sudden I was lost in a crowd of 49,000 students. What?? There are over 700 exchange students alone, which is basically 1/3 of my entire college. I almost feel like I’m studying abroad in America because I think this school is more similar to traditional American schools ... read more
