Published: January 10th 2012Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Mona Vale8 - 28 November 2011 What a whirlwind! I needed to get back from my holiday from my holiday so I could have a rest! We flew home this month for our very good mates' wedding - Em and Benny. It was such a fun and very cool wedding - what other bride does the worm on the dance floor and goes crowd surfing a number of times??!! We had a great time catching up with as many people as we could in a short time and it was good for Alex to know he had finished up work for a little while again. The boys loved catching up with all their family and friends but it was certainly a busy three weeks. Don't think I've ever crammed so much into that time frame before..... By ... read more

Published: February 11th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Mona ValeWoke up with the light and the Aussie bird's chirping away. Headed out to check out the notorious King's Cross....pubs and prostitution. Jet lag and hiking around Sydney did me in so I missed out on the night life. Caught the sidewalk washing, and the early morning coffee drinkers! Had a coffee from Mr. Coffee, while waiting for Joe's Cafe to open. While eating my fruit salad I watched the hoards of Catholic girls parade by in their blue uniforms and heavy black backpacks headed for school. Betsi, my old Port Townsend friend picked me up at my hostel and off we went to the airport to pick up her two visiting Bainbridge Island friends. All together now we went off to Manley to catch the ferry to the Opera House. Betsi wanted her friends to ... read more
Day 94 This morning we packed up the camper van and headed onto the M4 motorway which goes straight into Sydney. We travelled for approximately 40km from Penrith to an area south west of the city called Belmore, to drop off camper van at the depot. Along the way we saw the Olympic Park and the city skyline in the distance. The train station was 10 minutes walk from the depot and it felt strange to be backpackers again carrying all our belongings. It took us half an hour to get to Central Station where Oliver's uncle David was picking us up. We drove north over the Sydney harbour bridge towards Mona Vale where David and Oliver's aunty Eleanor have a luxury penthouse apartment overlooking the Bayview golf course. In the afternoon we went for a ... read more
Don't beat around the Bush
Published: January 31st 2009Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Mona ValeDay 84 I was up first as usual, not particularly early as we had a latish night, but around 6.30am. One thing I am not is ever grumpy in the morning; yes it usually comes on throughout the day, but never early in the morning. (I can vouch for that!!). Humans are creatures of habit, and I like mine, I like to stride out of bed and instantly put the kettle on, this is why Caroline “always” gets tea in bed and I never do!! (I just want to note at this point that when Andy affords himself an afternoon kip, I don’t, I usually busy myself doing something). The camp site in Narrabeen was good, we had found out from Lionel and Janet how it had come to be!! Back when the soldiers came back ... read more

Published: January 30th 2009Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Mona ValeDay 83 We had every intention of going to Sydney today, our plan was to get the bus in to Manley, then the Fast Cat ferry over to Circular key. Once we had some breakfast and by the time we got ourselves together we looked at the bus time table and found that we would have to wait another 45 minutes for a bus, so we drove directly to Manley parked in the Australian equivalent of an NCP carpark and jumped on the fast cat from there. The Ferry ride is only half an hour, really pleasant in the sunshine, we sat at the front of the boat as if we were on a school outing. . I had heard on the radio this morning about a cruise liner that was in or coming in at ... read more

Published: January 28th 2009Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Mona ValeDay 82 The Insular Peninsular, this is how the Northern Beaches are described, apparently the people that live here don’t leave, everyone knows each other and the only time the locals leave Northern Beaches is to pop into Sydney to shop or go to the airport to fly elsewhere, they don’t travel inland at all! (Sounds a bit Stepford Wives if you ask me!), however this is also the home of Palm Beach and that is the home of Home and Away that popular Australian soap that we get in England. This morning was spent doing washing and making sure that the tent had a good airing after getting damp on the inside yesterday. The rain from the night before did not get in, however as we had to pack the tent away in the rain, ... read more
Here we are safe and sound and home at last. What a wonderful bed and what a wonderful night's sleep. Thailand was really great. We had more time than we had originally planned and it worked out very well. One last glitch was at the airport when we found out that because we had made an alteration to our previous flight time someone had forgotten to tell them we wouldn't be flying at the original time. This meant we looked like a 'no show' and our subsequent booking for the final leg was cancelled and hence we had no booking. Luckily they put us on stand by and we picked up a couple of seats at the last minute. When we go to the airport there was no shuttle bus. I made a call. They had ... read more
