I didn't make the name up! I was added into a facebook page for the aupairs living in and around Orange, from there we decided to make a new one and Kaddy (crazy German) named it European Flavour. Although we are out numbered by the Germans (again lol) we make some world war III jokes which are sometimes over the line, but we laugh. So the crazy new friends are from all over, German, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Italy and I am the only British one. They listen to how I pronounce the language so they know whats right, I've told them it may not be a great idea! We have been meeting up for coffee, dates with the children, for icecream and I have a birthday party on Saturday. We are also planning a weekend to ... read more

So much fun! Tay and I took the quad bike out for a tour of the farm, we did about 30mins and still didn't cover it all, but I got to see some amazing views. I really don't want to start taking the landscape out here for granted and start to miss how breathtaking it is. At home when I look out my lounge window I see a road and the house opposite, here I see for miles and miles, rolling hills, animals (creepy and cute) and the sunrise and sunset. We went around the paddock and saw some of the animals, cows, sheep, bulls, horses, dogs and of course some lizards etc. Well Tay actually ran a lizard over, but we went back and it was gone so it must have been fine. It felt ... read more

not so cute .. My first experience of just how farm-like this place is, not only did I stain my nice white pumps with green lamb poo!! I was covered in mud and God only knows what else when I got back. Needless to say I will be better dressed in 'farm' clothes next time. It didn't start great as Cherrie took some of the children up while I tried to pull together an outfit that was acceptable as 'rough clothes'. It ended with leggings, a strap top with another over the top and the only shoes I has which weren't stappy sandles or heels, I did look at myself in the mirror and didn't think I had gotten it spot on really. So armed with my not so great clothes, my phone and Gus the ... read more

First of all I need to catch up about my flight, the second half of the longest journey of my life! (and for once I am not exaggerating) The second half was a lot better than the first as it was shorter for a start and I found episodes of Game of Thrones, True Blood and some newly released films! Happy days :) The car journey form Sydney to Molong wasn't long- about 4 hours - which seemed like nothing after the flight and it went fast as I had Cherrie and Tay to talk to. Well Tay was ill so she wasn't as chatty as she is now- which is a lot - her feeling ill turned into a bacterial infection and she ended up in hospital. I spent Saturday night with her on the ... read more

In Canada and in the US, and I'm fairly certain parts of Europe as well, the seasons are defined according to the Earth's position around the sun. Thus the longest and shortest days of the year, as well as the equinoxes, define the season boundries. I never really knew any other system, so it surprised me that here in Oz, the season boundries are simply dates on the calendar. So summer here offically starts December 1st and ends with autumn's start on March 1st. It's already confusing enough for me to have my seasons reversed, but to also have different definitions of seasons...oy veh! Adding to that confusion: the fact that this year's spring, summer and autumn didn't really feel much different... This has been a slow summer. Summer is so slow that there's a festival ... read more

Spring has finally arrived in the Central West of New South Wales. For the past few weeks, there have only been a few mornings with frost on the car. The days are getting warmer, with highs now reaching above 15°C on a regular basis, even reaching 20° at times. The windows can finally be opened again, and our heating bills will decrease. The flowers are blooming, the fields have never been greener, the birds are singing, and sandals have been dug out from the back of the closet. I'm ready for the warmer weather! I do love having four seasons, but I must admit that this past winter in Orange was harder to deal with than a normal Canadian winter. It's as if these Australians are in denial that temperatures could ever dip below 20°C. Houses ... read more

Sunday 23rd October – The night hadn’t been too bad - the late conversations diminished enough not to be a nuisance (eventually) although I could hear some city revellers making merry quite late on. Some kids were up and about early although we were ready to rise anyway so they didn’t really disturb us. We weren’t in any real hurry as our next destination was to be Orange – a journey of about 160 kilometers. It was slightly out of the obvious way back towards Melbourne but we had a particular reason for travelling to Orange. During their travels around Aus, Sarah and Darryl met up with and enjoyed the company of Jane and Tony who they first met on the very top of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and spent quite some time together. Later in their ... read more

It has been well over 6 months since I landed in Australia. The first month was spent relaxing and traveling, having done a trip to the "Snowies". Then it was off to Orange, where I spent a month job hunting and getting used to my new surroundings. I found a job in Bathurst, with a fancy title, making more money in 3 months than I did in 2 years at my last job. Still, I can't help but feel the itch to drop it all and travel somewhere. I don't have super exciting stories to tell...my life lately has been adjusting to the "metro, boulot, dodo" (commute, work, sleep). We traded in the gas-guzzling and starting-to-be-unreliable Landcruiser for a brand new zippy Mazda. And we moved recently, into our own little mini-house. With this entry, I ... read more

One of the most common comments I got while I was in Orange, NSW was "Oh, you're Canadian, you must be loving this weather!!" Grrrr. I don't mind the cold. Okay, that's a lie. I totally mind it. My Canadian blood has been spoiled with Canadian double-paned glass, central heating and proper winter clothing. I was not prepared for a winter in Orange, NSW. Go ahead, make fun of the Canuk who can't handle an Aussie winter. Sure. But if it's -7°C outside, I do not expect to walk inside and still see my breath in the air!! I expect to walk inside to warm up, not continue shivering! I am also used to there being snow on the ground if it is -7° outside. Give me snow any day over just plain cold with no ... read more

I'm currently in Australia, in the quiet country city of Orange, New South Wales. I'm not being terribly touristy, as I'm spending my days relaxing, reading, and planning little details for an autumn ceremony in Montreal. I did actually go to the tourist information office, so I do plan to be a tourist in the next two weeks before I leave Orange. But in the meantime, I'm being adult and looking at loans and jobs and houses and all that adult jazz that I've avoided for so long. Am I ready to settle down? On the topic of travel as a lifestyle, I feel the need to ramble: There are some people who never travel. Perhaps they are scared, perhaps they always find excuses to not travel, or perhaps it just doesn't interest them. There are ... read more
