Strewth! We are painfully aware that we've taken a rather long artistic pause since last sharing our adventures in the amazing land Down Under with you dear friends. Fear not, neither have we left you out in the cold nor have we completely indulged in idleness, latter only on a part-time basis. We have done a couple of short expeditions that we are about to tell you, have had some major festivities to celebrate and left Sydney behind us and got a new home on wheels. After ten highly enjoyable days of worldly pleasures in Sydney, it's time to take our first walk on the wild side and head to the bush. The bush, the hinterland, in the broadest Aussie sense is anywhere beyond one's backyard, more strictly speaking, anywhere outside of a town. At some ... read more

Our second to last full day in Sydney was actually spent two hours outside of the city center. Our full day wine tour gave us the opportunity to get to know another group of people - see the countryside - and drink some Aussie wines!!! Our tour guide, Jason, was a really nice guy. He was a fan of American Football (which is extremely rare for an Australian) and he did a great job of getting the group talking/sharing stories with one another. Since the tour picked us up from the hotel at 7 AM - Brian and I spent a good deal of the ride dozing in and out of sleep. As for the wine tours/tastings - we visited 3 different vineyards and honestly, it wasn't much different from a tasting in the US. We ... read more

A fantastic road trip to Hunter Valley, wine country. But first a picnic stop at the beach. A super great stay at Blue Bush Estates. Room and building beautiful. Dinning Room wonderful. Lounge room Wonderful. We loved it. So quiet and not too many at the estate during our 2 night stay. The 3 of us actually lounged on the sofas, one for each of us. A walk in the vine field, a great BBQ. A beautiful sleep. Get ready for the next day wine tour.... read more

The Hunter Valley, in New South Wales (NSW), is an internationally recognised wine producing region. The hot days and cool nights enable the perfect growing conditions, whilst the inviting cellar doors provide a platform for its consumption. With over fifty wineries offering free tastings, the car practically drove itself there. The police have done little to endear themselves to me since being in Australia but I have to commend those of the NSW branch. Sat waiting on the edge of this wine tasting utopia they decided to breathalise those on the way in to the region and not out. Genius! Not that we were over the limit when leaving the next day, but it was nicer to be be breathalised before the tastings than the morning after. A breakfast plate filled with everything from sausages to ... read more

Day 33 was the one we had been looking forward to for a while...chocolate, cheese and wine tasting in the Hunter Valley!!! We joined the minibus at 7.45am and headed to our first stop....the Walkabout Wildlife Park! We had our first experiences of Australian wildlife and were walking around with kangaroos, stroking Koalas and holding yet more snakes which was very exciting!! Next stop was the chocolate factory where we sampled chilli chocolate (NOT nice) and then it was winery number 1! We were aiming for sophistication and succeeded until we decided to make our first purchase. Always looking for a bargain we didn't miss the clearance case of 12 bottles of wine for $45! Unfortunately however the wine did come at the expense of taste which was very definately not exquisite and so spritzers were ... read more

My last afternoon as a Miss was spent at my beautiful friend Pru’s house. I’d wanted to bring something Vietnamese for it and decided to theme the afternoon based around Vietnamese Tea Pots. I started planning a relaxed Afternoon Tea, and was over the moon when Robyn & Pru suggested we have it at their gorgeous house in Elderslie. We hired a bus, had some delicious food and wine and spent the afternoon chatting in the sun. The few hours we spent together, flew by so very quickly so I am really appreciative of these gorgeous photos that Jackie took over the afternoon. Thank you so much for everyone who came and made my afternoon perfect, I am so grateful for my beautiful friends and family.... read more

Family Outing for father's day in Hunter Valley then on the way home we stopped over in Nobby's Beach and had an gratifying seafood lunch in Newcastle. The accommodation in Crowne Plaza was a SUPERB! I paid $286.00 ( Industry rate only ) for a 2 bedroom villa. I would say its 5 star hotel with 2 sophisticated restaurants, 2 cool bars, golf coarse, spa, free gym, contemporary room and an excellent amenities. The best part of the hotel is the swimming pool. I was pretty impressed with the hotel and I highly recommend this for someone who would like to experience a sophisticated and extraordinary accommodation. I realised that where you stay can give you a first impression what kind of holiday you will be getting. After a long travel duration exploring around until your ... read more

Think SBS GOURMET FARMER, Matthew Evans Australia's most feared food critic who was once a chef, then turned restaurant reviewer and realised that chefs in Australia cannot always get the best ingredients. Hence one of the reasons Matthew has moved to the Huon Valley in Tasmania where he rears his own sheep, pigs, has a milking cow and is waiting for his old trusty chickens to lay eggs. Here is a similar story in the Hunter Valley between Dungog and Clarence Town, where Ian D I'll call him, once a chef and owner of a cement business has opted for the same lifestyle change with partner Jill and beautiful children Grace, Tom and Montana. Quentin and I spent a fantastic week seeing how Ian and Jill's self sustainable farm is worked and managed. We donned on ... read more

We have begun another little trip - this time we've headed west. After three weeks of continuous rain in Sydney, we are hoping away from the coast will mean sunshiney days. We left home yesterday afternoon, and drove north to Swansea to spend the night by Lake Macquarie, which looked quite beautiful in the golden sunset. Today we headed to Pokolbin, an area we often visited when the children were young - a nice drive from Sydney with wineries, restaurants, antique shops and picnic areas. When we enquired about where the relatively new Hunter Valley Gardens were, we were very surprised to find that they were in this same area - in fact the dustbowl area transformed, not all that far from where we once picnicked. We loved it all - 60 acres containing 10 distinctive ... read more

On Sat 19 Dec we caught the night train (because that was the cheapest travel option) South West to Maitland. We booked our tickets at the Byron Bay train station, however - get this, Bryon Bay has a train station but ... no trains!!! You can book the train but in order to embark you have to catch a bus to Casino - very bizarre! THE NIGHT TRAIN The night train was quite the experience, I believe the entire population of any surrounding mental institutions must either escape or be let out to travel the night train! We were surrounded by freaks and lunatics!! Consequently, we daren't go to sleep and the ten hour train journey passed slowly ... very slowly!!! Still, without drama or incident, the train arrived at Maitland at 6am on Sun ... read more
