Our run of beautiful weather has come to an end. Today it is not just overcast, it is raining. On the plus side it is getting us psychologically prepared for our return to Melbourne’s wet and cold weather. Today we started heading south in earnest clocking up 451 kilometres in the truck. We even managed to drive the truck out of the car park without incident and without Bernie making me ride on the running board to weigh the car down more on the side he was worried about touching the height guide/barrier. I’m not sure he was ever serious about that, but last night he was telling me that I might have to ride the running board to get the car out of the car park!!? We set out from Terrigal through Gosford and then ... read more

We got up at 9am, by which time a few of the others had left. We decided to have lazy day, although I did want to see the little Historic Museum just up the road. The Museum looks like an old house but there’s a lot more than you’d expect behind those doors! Inside most of the rooms are beautifully set up as if they are still lived in but with furniture and fittings from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. It is jam-packed with so many treasures that it’s hard to remember them all. Next to the kitchen was an old concrete boiler for the laundry (Barry’s Mum used to use a similar copper one when she was young in Brisbane – I’m glad I don’t have to do the washing like that nowadays!). ... read more

While at the Centre, we got chatting to the young lady about the floods and whether any had come up as far as Sheridan Street. She said her Nan told her about a bad one in 1974 that would have had the TIC underwater. She, herself, experienced the floods in 2010 and 2012 (both once in a hundred years floods!), where the buildings on the lower side of the street got badly inundated. She said that the townsfolk learned from the 2010 one and had a plan in place by the one in 2012, to help save people’s newly replaced belongings. As soon as the flood warning came in, anyone that had a truck, including her husband, rallied around and helped the occupants of those properties move all their stuff up the hill into storage, working ... read more

We left the capital today and set off towards Melbourne and our next stop– “Along the road to Gundagai” (sorry I couldn’t resist it! For the non-Aussies, that’s the title of a very well known Australian bush song originally sung by Jack O’Hagan.) There are quite a few songs about Gundagai – another popular one being “Where the Dog Sits on the Tuckerbox, Five Miles from Gundagai”. There is a famous statue of a dog sitting on a tucker box (food box) that was set up in 1932 as a monument to the early Pioneers who often had a companion dog that would guard their possessions. It sits five miles North of Gundagai, unfortunately on the wrong side of the divided highway, so we didn’t see it this time, although we have before. The nearest thing ... read more

Well we where up nice and early, drained the Eski's. Had a nice freshing shower and worked out where we wanted to end up for the night. We left Moama about 9.30am and headed over to the boys at the 4x4 shop for a quick adjustment on the power pack. Picked up the best rolls and pies this side of the boarder before hitting the road. Our first stop was at my old stomping ground growing up, Nathalia. Took some sentimental pictures and decided to hit the Ettamogha Pub for lunch. We found our way through to Wodonga to stop for supplies, the important ones Beer and ice. We where getting rather hungry, but sort of made a detour and ended up by-passing Albury and getting straight onto the Hume highway. Oh well no pub and ... read more

Well we got up nice and early Paul cooked a yummy breakfast on the BBQ. We set off happily leaving our camp site know it was safe and sound through to Tumut. I was delighted with this not so little town. We walked around and only to find the ideals man fishing shop where he purchased a fine rod and a few lurers his prized one was, "Bloody Ripper" As it was lunch time we brought some Subway for lunch and found a nice little spot down by the river, pulling out our camping chairs and awning, totally enjoy lunch and the scenery. After packing things away and a wander down to the waters edge, we thought we would visit The Dog on the Tuckerbox at Snake Gully just outside of Gundagai took some great shot ... read more

Up and on the road by 8:30am to finish of the last 400kilometers to Sydney. Think we managed to find a place to stay so getting into Sydney should be easy. Bid a good farewell to our lovely neighbours and away we went. The scenery has changed now and there are a lot more hills/Mountains now that we have moved into New South Wales. The weather has also taken another turn for the worse and hasn't stopped raining for quite a few hours now. Got into Sydney about 12:30 just in time for another downpour. After getting our van sorted and in place and a bite to eat we went for a look around the market. I managed to get a pair of trousers even though the fitting room was a shower curtain with mum holding ... read more

The Dog on the Tuckerbox. I think when people hear the name 'Gundagai', they straight away think of the Dog on the Tuckerbox. The Dog on the Tuckerbox Memorial was established based on the old legend of Bill the Bullocky who in 1850 was driving his bullock team when the wagon was stuck in mud. After an unsuccessful attempt to get the wagon out of the mud, he went to have his lunch where he found his dog sitting on the tuckerbox. This is the poem that is displayed at the Dog on the Tuckerbox memorial: As I was coming down Conroy's Gap, heard a maiden cry: 'There goes Bill the Bullocky, He's bound for Gundagai. A better poor old - Never earned an honest crust, A better poor old - Never drug a whip through ... read more

These ruins are all that is left of the once standing Limestone Inn which stood at Gundagai. Built by Joseph and Rosannah Carberry in 1857, it consisted of 12 rooms, cellar, detached kitchen, storeroom and stables. All built from stone. The Limestone Inn was built to accommodate travellers on the main road between Sydney and Melbourne. In April 1861 a bushranger names Jack-in-the-boots held up the Inn demanding money from the staff and patrons. The name was later changed by the Carberry's to "The Australian Arms" as well as "The Squatter's Arms" and was finally closed in 1876. Now all you will find is this rickety wooden fence and piles of debris that are the ruins of this inn.... read more

This is a land of contrasts in more ways than one - we’ve gone from crispy dry 37 degrees to windy damp 7 degrees in the space of three weeks. Deviating from the Newell Highway on our way down to Melbourne, we are now in Canberra, ACT (Australian Capital Territory - a state within a state). I wanted to see the famed city designed by Walter Burley Griffin and we were virtually next door - only three hours drive away. We had already detoured to visit the wine region of Mudgee, where Rhys blew the budget and we spent twice as much on wine as on food, then Bathurst where he wanted to scare the pants off me driving around the race track. This he achieved very successfully even though there is a speed limit ... read more
