Fraser Coast and Wide Bay Region > Northern Rivers (NSW)….. ……Or, this Blog could also be called 'Christmas 2012 with Good Friends'… Childers (see last Blog also for more on this town and region) is a wonderful town with lots to see and do, a lively, energetic town full of seasonal workers and offering a great lifestyle in a great spot. We were heading back to the Troll and Trakkie to continue on when we spotted some friends from Kyneton (Vic) having a coffee at the Bakery and stopped to have lunch with them. They had come up for the weekend to look for somewhere to live! They liked the area so much they were going to move up here, it would definitely be warmer in winter than Kyneton! Our next stop was with Tom & ... read more

This week we having been staying on the farm of a Canadian friend on Woodford Island on the Clarence River near Grafton, NSW. I cannot understand why he is not here full time. It is so idyllic. On the veranda we look out over the 20 or 40 resident Kangaroos grazing in the front yard. There are Macadamia nut farms in front of that and then in the distance we see the sugar cane fields. The plethora of colourful and loud birds has our fingers flipping through the bird book frequently trying to identify.....kookabarra, rainbow bee-eater, kinfishers, heron, ibis, egrets, many doves, plover, lorrekeets, parrots of all sorts.......amazing. Our original plan when we came to Oz was to immediately buy a camper van and start driving north to circumnavigate Australia, doing the north first before the ... read more

Woolgoolga is a small town 25km north of Coffs Harbour which is renowned for its sizeable Sikh community. We had planned to be there for the Curry Fest – an annual celebration involving music, dance and lots of curries! – but sadly missed it by a few days. Instead, we thought we would drop in on our way through and treat ourselves to a yummy meal. But it was a real disappointment… there was only one curry house and that was closed!Aside from a big helicopter on a stilt in the Returned Servicemen Club car park and the Raj Mahal, a derelict and graffitied temple with two giant broken elephant statues, there wasn’t much to see either so we continued on our journey to Grafton. When we realised that the camping spot we were aiming for ... read more

Originally we planned to spend one night in Grafton, but it was a nice place and we decided to stay an extra night. We stayed at the showgrounds.. right in the middle of town, $20 a night and we had power and water. The showgrounds also doubles as the speedway, which is on this Saturday, Ryan seems disappointed that we won't be around for it. The wet weather from Ballina seemed to follow us and it resulted in a nice river of water running through our site... which of course means we bought the dogs into the caravan and spent the late afternoon until Noah went to bed trying to stop him from jumping, climbing and generally harrassing the dogs. Both nights in Grafton they slept in with us, as the ground was soggy and the ... read more

We started our day with a visit to New Italy. The name suggested more but all we could find was some public toilets with the Italian flag on the roof. Following on the same theme we drove to Maclean. This place takes its Scottish heritage very seriously. Its twinned with Portree on the Isle of Skye and even the telegraph poles are painted tartan. We had a wander around the town and found that you could buy most Scottish things. Some of them were the more tacky items such as ornaments of Scotty dogs wearing tartan hats but some were more traditional such as kilts and haggis. We bought snorkel sets - a slightly less Scottish item but a bargain at £15 for two. We were both hoping to find a nice beach where Andy could ... read more

Jacaranda Festival Tour Friday06 November - Sunday 08 November, 2009 The world-renowned Jacaranda Festival is held yearly in Grafton, Northern Rivers New South Wales. It was inaugurated in 1935 and was the first of Australia's folk festivals. It is based upon the magnificent spectacle of the hundreds of lilac-blossomed trees which grow in Grafton's broad tree lined avenues and it expresses the people's thanksgiving for the generosity with which nature has blessed this part of Australia. Day 01: Friday 06 November, 2009 Today we departed Gympie early morning and travelled to Yamba to commence our 3 Day tour to beautiful Grafton. Our accommodation in Yamba, not far from Grafton, was the perfect base for us to explore the area. After collecting all our passengers we made a stop at the Sharks Leagues Club for lunch.
