We drove a short-way down the Pacific Highway on our second day in the van. We stopped at Byron Bay, a busy place which seemed to have only one attraction: it's extremely crowded beach. After an amazing icecream, which was more cinder toffee than icecream, we left. Our campsite for the evening was Evans Head, which was on a nice location next to a river. That evening it rained very heavily and was still raining in the morning. Camping in the rain is definitely an experience. We left Evans Head determined to get to a national park, the Mann River National Park which is in a forest called Die Hard. One of the great things about Australia is that some of the national parks allow free camping. They generally lack facilities such as electricity and only ... read more

Leaving the coast we headed inland to Lismore. Sooner or later we had to cross the Great Dividing Range and we knew it would be challenging. The road to Lismore was narrow, winding and quite steep at times as we passed through incredibly lush country. You can see why the Hippies chose nearby Nimbin as their nirvana. When we arrived at the caravan park of our choice (with no booking) we discovered that caravan sites were closed for renovations. The friendly owner directed us to another caravan park nearby and soon we were settled in. Lismore is a big country town with an obvious Hippie and associated low socio-economic population. A significant part of our caravan park looked a bit like a slum and big steel bars on windows hinted that security might be an issue, ... read more

We had a bit of a lie in and then took our time getting ready to go out. The overnight low temperature had been 1 degree C so we weren’t in any hurry to go out into the cold! At least the wind had dropped so the chill factor was gone. Once we finally got going our first stop, as usual, was the Visitor Information Centre. We were greeted by an extremely enthusiastic lady who overwhelmed us with all the things to do. We took the armload of pamphlets she had given us to peruse in the car. The Centre had strongly adopted a Celtic theme, as had the town, which was largely settled by Scots originally. There were big teddy bears wearing a range of different plaids, Celtic jewellery and flags of the Celtic nations ... read more

We have pulled into Glen Innes and hope to stay here for about 3 - 4 nights. It is a lot cooler here, around 21 degrees. We haven't even needed to put the air conditioner on yet. We went and had a look at these Aboriginal fish traps before we left Brewarrina this morning. They were very interesting. Rocks were placed so that the fish could be trapped as the water went low. We hope to have a fairly quiet day tomorrow - no driving!... read more

Good' Day mates, After a night in a hot room with 3 Danish boys Kevin and I started our day with a nice walk in Byron Bay. The weather was not as bad as yesterday, yet it was very cloudy...But within minutes we saw the sun making it's way through the clouds. Was this going to be a sunny day... yes it was !!!! We had breakfast with the Pacific Ocean behind us and the first surfers arriving... By the time we finished breakfast there were less clouds and lots of sun. So we made a nice walk on the beach. Byron Bay has a really beautiful beach. See the pictures on Facebook. Before heading to our next station we drove up to the most Eastern Point of Australia in Byron Bay for a photo shoot ... read more
