Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I am almost done my Master's and it has been keeping me busy, but I have finally left Sydney. I headed north up the coast to Newcastle and Coffs Harbor for a work trip with Monster Energy. I have to say I have a pretty amazing job for being in school, travelling around sampling energy drinks at fun events and Aussie beaches :) The best part is getting paid to travel to different towns. While driving, I ended up seeing some kangaroos in the wild hopping along the road which was pretty amazing. The beaches were beautiful and I liked the [View Full Entry]

After a short drive from Bellingen to Coffs Harbour we enjoyed a walk along the marina to Muttonbird Island for great views of the town and surrounding coast. We then walked along the beach under the old pier but it was still a bit cool and windy to sunbathe or swim. This is the nicest part of the town but we decided to walk into the centre anyway which is a few kms away. We found a beautiful walk back from the centre to the marina along the creek, part of which was a boardwalk through mangrove swamps. The YHA hostel [View Full Entry]

It is 31C degrees here at Woolgoolga and it’s windy. Every afternoon a wind comes up which shakes the motor home and blows over tents. We’ve given up having the awning and our table and chairs out and instead are cooling off in the air conditioning - chilling out. Yesterday morning we walked along Woolgoolga’s beautiful beach to the lake. Because of the recent high seas, and 'Woopi' (as it's called by locals and we who've spent our lives coming here!) losing a lot of the beach, the wreck of the ‘Buster’ is now exposed. Buster went aground along the beach [View Full Entry]

I finally got to fulfill my dream of swimming with Dolphins. I wouldn’t really call it swimming but we were in the water with them. Early that morning we collected our wetsuits from a dive shop near the Pet Porpoise Pool. A few tight squeezes and we were fitted out with our suits. They gave us extra layers as well as it would be pretty cold in the pool. Our Dolphin Encounter was scheduled for 1pm so we visited the centre and watched the Dolphin and Seal show that morning. Michelle got a kiss from a seal but she assures me [View Full Entry]

G'day! How's sunny England?! Melbourne was a bit of a shock to the system. There I was thinking 'it's Australia, it can't get that cold', going out in just a t-shirt and hoody and later returning to the hostel to grab my jacket, hat and gloves! Apparently they had just been hit by a particularly cold spell plus the on and off rain made matters worse. Melbourne is a great city though, despite lacking the major sites that Sydney may hold it has a very livable feel to it and is extremely multicultural. Left Belltrees a few days ago, wish we could've stayed longer but me and Siov aren't much use on a farm so couldn't really be of any use to them! We drove north and stayed inland to avoid the floods. Went through a few very country towns which were very uninspiring. We were starting to dispare that the trip was going to be cold and boring! The first town on our route was Tamworth, which is famous for country music, but very uninspiring! After a days drive we got to Armidale, which doesn't have much going on. Found a lovely spot [View Full Entry]

Well here we are - in Coffs Harbour - two months after leaving Sydney Harbour. Not exactly a screamingly fast pace north - but the weather gods seemed to think we needed a slow start to the trip - so sent rain, wind and big swells to keep us in the marinas rather than out at sea. We actually had a great time at each stop (Pittwater, Newcastle and Port Stephens) - and decided that as we wanted to come back to Sydney for a week for a couple of very special occasions, we would put the boat into Coffs Harbour [View Full Entry]

25/05/09 Monday Day 283 After seeing Cape Byron lighthouse we started heading south once more shortening the journey to Sydney. We passed through a place called Ballina where it had a huge prawn on top of one of it’s buildings. We had to be diverted here because the main highway was still flooded. Most of the towns on the way to Coffs Harbours look battered from the storm that passed over us when we were in Brisbane. There’s still debris of leaves and bits of tress everywhere and there’s also loads of trees knocked over. Coffs Harbour is a nice place, [View Full Entry]

Viel besser hingegen war Sea World. Dort wurde uns für ca. 20 Dollar verhältnismäßig viel ge [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone I am having a catching up session with the blogs again then I'm up to date. It's quite hard to find computers that are quick and cheap and they have them at Sydney so I am making the most of it! I've put some more pictures on aswell of Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie which were two stops on my way back down through New South Wales towards Sydney. My first stop was Coffs and I loved it! I stayed at the YHA for the first time and that was great. They were really friendly and it was in [View Full Entry]
