Hi there, we arrived here in Coffs harbour on January 29th, after spending some time in the Dorrigo National park, and a free camp in Thora. Dorrigo National Park is a national park in New South Wales (Australia), 580 km north of Sydney on Dome Road off the Waterfall Way, 5 km east of the town of Dorrigo. The Park is part of the New England Group of the World Heritage Site Gondwana Rainforests of Australiainscrib... read more

Der ... read more

Have added a photo of the surfing santa's for you this is SO WRONG unless you live on this side of the world and it is SO RIGHT, ha ha Well woke up at around 5.30am so my thoughts that I would be over my jet lag has just shot me in the foot. Well we have a 6 1/2 to 7 hour road trip to get to Mullaway which is north of Coffs Harbour where a few days ago a young lad was attacked and died by a shark attack. Seeing as we are staying on a shack on the beach me thinking need to be careful getting in the sea. Well we have come just north of Coff's Harbour and to be honest it was so commercialised thank goodness we are not staying here ... read more

After waking up in a condensation filled station-wagon, we both enjoyed the $30 luxury of a hot shower. Clean(er) beings, we checked out late at 12 pm and headed for the nearby beach at Crescent Heads where there were 2 surfers catching the waves. The beach was wonderfully sandy and warm, and other than the surfers we had the entire thing to ourselves. We walked back to the car and while sitting reading the map, I spied what we believe were dolphins surfing the waves right in front of us. Feeling spoiled that I have seen Minke Whales in Orkney and dolphins in Greece I was rather chuffed that Andrew and I got to see some by pure chance at a quiet beach. I then got back into the car (a couple of driving lessons learned ... read more

We left Port Stephens fairly early on the Tuesday morning, knowing that we had a drive of about four and a half hours to do today to get to Coffs Harbour. Once packed up and checked out, we set off up the Pacific Highway, and stopped off at Port Macquarie midway through the journey. Our original plan was to stay here, however we had to shave off a few days when we extended our stay at work by a week to save a bit more money. Once parked up, we had a walk around the harbour and some of the shops to give our legs a stretch. It was once again a beautiful day, and the area looked stunning in the morning sunshine. We found a little pub that had some really good lunch specials so ... read more

We arrived in Coffs Harbour last Friday expecting to stop overnight before heading further south to our family in Medowie ready for birthday celebrations on Wed 27th. However, the floods at Kempsey are much worse than expected and the highway is still closed. At last the rain has eased, so several loads of washing later and a relocation to a cheaper site in the camping ground, we expect to be here for another 2 or 3 days. So what do you do? Coffs is really a nice beach side town with good facilities plus a number of tourist attractions. We like the freebies such as the Botanical Gardens, the beaches and boat harbour etc. There is also The Butterfly House and The Big Bananna, both of which boast a range of activities to keep one busy. ... read more

The wind, she did blow - thought we were at sea with Cptn Cook. In fact one blast Marg thought had completely rolled our boat - err, motorhome. The buckets of rain fell most of the night and we were expecting to see flood water around us. Today, (Saturday) has seen the wind abate, and even a peep of sun late in the afternoon. It seems our departure from Ballina was timely as they had wind gusts to 200ks and rain has crippled their sewerage system. A couple of commercial buildings also lost their rooves. Due to flooding on the main highway, we cannot progress in any direction more than a few kilometers, so we will stay here until floods south of Coffs abate. So what do you do to fill in an hour or two? ... read more

We had a dream - bright sun, Camera's a clicking every day, But day four has come - what a blast, A tropical low has made us run. Over the years we have driven through and camped in some scary weather from blizards to fierce tropical storms. The present storm while not spectacular certainly has brought challenges. The wind have been switching as well as extreme gusts, probably around 80-100ks. Driving became hazardous with trees down, bits and pieces flying. In Ballina yesterday a gust of wind picked up and moved tables and chairs at an outdoor eatery. The plan was to meet up with David and Mary at Yelgun and then first stop Ballina followed by various NNSW beaches until Sunday - BUT, the tropical low changed that. The Yelgun meetup on Monday all went ... read more

We left Richard and Christine in their fab residence just off Surfers Paradise,,, an early start on our road trip to Perth... on 11th Feb and headed the short distance North to collect the campervan from Brisbane. We found the depot and completed the paperwork whilst the customer services representative (Peter) brought the vehicle out to us for a quick inspection. We had done this before a couple of years back and accepted poor quality kit, not checking it properly .... and it was also going to be our home for a month so we went through it all thoroughly. We were not impressed with the camping table and chairs and asked for them to be replaced. Well, 'Peter' had a complete headloss......He threw the table out of the van and across the yard followed by ... read more

We continued our northern exploration of New South Wales and took some lovely drives along the edge of the continent. Which reminds me, we heard that Australia is the only island that is a continent and the only continent that is a country. As a result of its isolated position in the world, it is filled with exotic flora and fauna. We started seeing road signs showing kangaroo and koala crossings. There are about 800 species of eucalyptus and the hillsides are covered with these gum trees as far as the eyes can see. The population of this vast country is about half that of the state of California and 90% of that population lives along the coasts ringing this island. Just to get a perspective on the population density: Australia has 5 people per square ... read more
