North America » United States December 12th 1986

I was concerned with my Dad's health, and now that we had a child whom the grandparents wanted to see more often, we decided to spend as much time in the United States as possible in the coming years. So in addition to home leave that I earned every other year (i.e., 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1994), we spent our 1986 and 1987 Christmas holidays and a post Christmas holiday in February 1989 with family in the States. 12 December 1986 Friday. We also traveled elsewhere within the States, since we were there. We flew from Brussels to Los Angeles, arriving at about 9 pm, which with the time difference was about 9 am the next day in Brussels. We rented a car and then headed for our nearby hotel. It was a long flight ... read more

North America » Mexico » Baja California » Rosarito August 31st 1986

The history of California makes for a fascinating story. Who would have thought the world's eighth largest economy was formerly part of Mexico? The US took control of several border states formerly in Mexico at the conclusion of a triumphant war, yet the enormous influence of their Latino neighbours to the south is still prevalent in California today. Continuing from the previous journal my American friend and his buddy offered to drive me down to Baja California for a weekend away from San Diego. Mate, the furthest I'd travelled before going overseas was the to the border with Queensland, and here I was preparing to visit Mexico as my second overseas country. How exciting is that?! We piled into the car, dear reader, and drove the twenty kilometres from downtown San Diego to the border. The ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Francisco August 28th 1986

There's no feeling in the world, the lovely reader, to compare with heading overseas for the first time, away from family and friends with no real time frame in mind for returning home. It can feel a bit terrifying but is also an exhilarating experience, full of anticipation for what lies ahead laced with a degree of apprehension due to fear of the unknown. The period of preparation leading to a long trip overseas galvanizes a prospective traveller like little else can, and it was with all these conflicting emotions swirling around in my head that I boarded a flight over the Pacific ocean destined for the land of opportunity, the United States of America. To paraphrase the famous song ... California here I come! I arrived at San Francisco airport after clearing US customs formalities ... read more

North America » United States August 2nd 1986

This would be our second home leave after moving to Brussels. This would be first time that Tamara, who was born on 26 January, would see the rest of her family in the States. She had met her grandmothers; both Linda and my Mom's right after she was born, as they had come in sequential visits to help Linda recover from walking pneumonia shortly after Tamara was born. Tamara had seen Uncle Tom in April on our visit to England with him. Tamara had seen her Aunt Carol who had moved to Brussels and was living with us. Now she would see the rest of her uncles and aunts and cousins. 2 August 1986 Saturday. We flew into Washington Dulles and stayed with friends Jim and Linda who had been co-sponsors of the senior high young ... read more

ENTRY ONE — April 25th 1986 The Maple Leaf I could not believe that my wife of thirteen months was threatening to leave me! Nor the reason for her possible departure! Miranda and I have been the victims of some strange occurrences. We have also made a rather disturbing discovery. The mystery seems to involve a 19th century cult called the Catholic Apostolic Church. . . She had always stood by me in the past, particularly during those difficult days when I challenged the authorities at seminary. Miranda, a beautiful but determined "Rochester girl" had made up her mind to marry me soon after we'd met: "Twenty-seven is old enough for a woman to know what she wants in a man!" The days following our wedding were filled with tedious tasks: the... read more

North America » United States » Idaho » Boise February 1st 1986

February, 1986 My father was working for an Exxon-affiliate in Colombia and he was transferred to Boise, ID. I know, of all places we get shipped to Boise. Everyone always makes a weird face when I mentioned I lived there. I really don’t have much of an opinion of it, as I was very young; I just have very vague childhood memories. My mom says she liked it a lot; it was a nice, quiet town. It only had one shopping center, and the first mall was being built when we left. I guess I can say this is when and where I learned English. I was two-and-half years old when we lived there. I have some memories of pre-school, a neighbor’s dog, toys, parts of our house, and thanks to pictures, snow. For some quick ... read more
