We were up at 5:30 AM today because we had a long drive to make. And I have to add, I really have little of note to write about. Moving days can be boring, because we are not touring anything and these days are usually chosen through uninspiring areas. We left the hotel before 7 AM and 56 degrees and said good-by to Shelby, MT. We spent two days in a town with no restaurants, two hotels and one casino. I was glad to be moving on. The drive took us through lots of flat farmland again today. And before we got the Wyoming, the topography did change somewhat, but not a whole lot. We made a pit stop in the middle of nowhere, at Eddie’s Corner in Montana, at the intersection of routes 87 & ... read more

As I was approaching Devils Tower, I was amazed how it is just there. Sticking up 50 million years ago, molten magma was forced into the sedimentary rock near the ground surface. As it cooled, it contracted and fractured into columns. Overly millions of years, erosion of the sedimentary rock exposed Devils Tower. It is 867 feet tall from the base. There is a great 1.3 mile walk around Devils Tower. It was very cool to see all sides of the Devils Tower. Even saw a snake right next to the paved trail in the rocks. Yes, there were several people climbing the Tower. I was told by a Ranger that it takes about 4-6 hours to climb the Tower but only 1 hour to come down, unless you make an error of course.... read more

After going to bed way too late last night, we slept like the dead. After breakfast, we unhooked from out utilities and were on the road by 8:10am. The Cedar Hammock group was leaving at the same time, and had a lot of ground to cover. We fueled up (40 gallons) and calculated we got just over 7 MPG yesterday. The drive thru South Dakota is quite boring. The scenery along the way consists of miles and miles of farm land and cattle. On this trip, we decided to check out Wall's Drug Store, just north of the badlands. They must have spent half a million dollars on billboards telling us the place was world famous. Well, how do you describe it? It was a small, western looking town full of gift shops and trinkets. Definitely ... read more

Le ... read more

Geo: 44.2932, -105.505We have taken to the pavement one again and now head SouthEast out of Montana and back through Wyoming. Due to great on the fly planning. We are not backtracking yet, so everything we see is new. Tonight camp is set up in the town of Gillette. Nosy neighbors appear to have taken photos of the jeep, so no free night tonight. This morning started out great with us both sleeping in until the heat of the sun turned our tent into a sweat lodge. We packed up and went for a dip in Boiling River. Very fascinating spot where the hot thermal springs flow into the freezing glacier fed river creating a mixture of sensations between hot and cold. On our way back to the car, Alex, with a keen eye, spotted a fawn ... read more

We're back! So the night before last we stayed at a KOA in the Black Hills. THis was our first KOA and I loved it. It had everything you could ask for including a restaurant, waterslide, rental cars, fully loaded bathrooms and anything else you can imagine. Basically home away from home in a tent. Ang, of course, thought it was way too much. I was quite happy there. It was our coldest night out; I think temperatures dipped into the 20's. A hot shower was quite nice after that. We left pretty early and went to our first stop, the Crazy Horse Memorial, which was only about 10 miles away. This was probably the most important, historical, and most enjoyable stop on our trip so far. To give you an accurate description, I've attached the ... read more

We left Ennis, MT about 0630 this morning, and the temp was below freezing, but the sun was up, and we had our cold wx gear. Another great day. I took 344 pictures today alone. We got to Yellowstone in about an hour, and spent 2 ½ hours doing the grand loop and going to the Northeast exit. We had a 5 min delay for bison in the road, but other than that, no traffic issues. We have had just about all the roads this trip to ourselves. Too early for the tourist season I guess. The northeast exit via the road to the Roosevelt Lodge reaches in excess of 8000’, and zigzags up the mountains to get there. After exiting there, we got on 296, Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. A great road through various terrains. ... read more

After a violent thunderstorm the previous evening, after which we finally ate a delicious dinner in the Mural Room with a table by the large picture windows looking out onto the mountains, we headed north again. By driving back through part of Yellowstone, we were able to save substantial mileage. That turned out to be fortuitous, because the drive out the East Entrance of Yellowstone was one of the more beautiful drives we took. After passing Mary Bay, underneath which lie the hottest parts of the park, you climb out through a high pass with new snow patches and waterfalls around every bend. Eventually, on the other side of the pass, you enter an area of fantastically carved hoodoos in soft welded ash and rhyolite rock. Streams and lakes abut the highway. Eventually you come out onto ... read more

*YAWNS* i am BUSHED! This morning we had MORE waffles (this time the cooking part turned out great! They only sucked today because of there only being suger free syrup...ehem.) then went to the corn palace! It wasn't what i expected. There was a lady making pop corn balls and she gave us free samples and told us about how they ship them to the soldiers and blah blah blah (that's what her stories turned into as i focused on the pop corn...). After that mom saw a giant Jackalope statue that she INSISTED we stop and take pictures on despite. Despite my curses on her life, she pulled over and promptly walked straight into a puddle full of mud and algae!HA After she fished her shoe out and made me stradle the weirdo thing RIGHT ... read more
