There was hardly anybody in my camp last night, surprising really as it is in such a nice area and not far from Seattle. However I headed back through Roslyn and got a last couple of snaps as the sun was at a better angle for some of them. Out into the rabble on interstate 80 as I had enough ground that I wanted to cover today that the back roads would have taken too long. This took me to Seattle over yet more great mountain scenery where I got onto I5 and headed south. This quickly got me to the turnoff for today’s target area. Mt St Helens, or at least what is left of it since its last big eruption in 1980. I remember seeing it clearly on TV as a kid, it just ... read more

Mount St. Helens and environs Lots to talk about here with many many photos, but I haven't got the time to update this section. To the point, we rode horseback around the mudflow and got a herlicopter view of the caldera of mount st. helens. We also hiked up to the mount ranier glaciers. Much more to come when I get organized.... read more

Yes indeed we entered into the cascade mountain range which contains a whole bunch of active volcanoes including Mt St Helen’s which erupted only 26 years ago and caused rather a mess. We took the scenic route ( which would have been much more scenic if it wasn’t for the fog) to St Helen’s and walked around in the underground lava caves for a couple of hours. Apparently in summer you don’t need any torches to walk through the caves. There are so many people in the caves they light the way for you! So me and my sis with our headlamps descended into an active volcano. The cave tunnels were quite large, and half of it was straightforward walking. Unfortunately it was fairly hard to take pictures in the caves so the main memories will ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful day in Astoria, Oregon. Since we were up fairly early, we decided to go to the beach and enjoy the morning watching the ocean. On our way there we found a bakery where we bought some nice pastries and coffee. We then drove on to the beach where we had breakfast, watching the beautiful ocean. After breakfast we drove for a couple miles on the beach and then played around with the car in some loose sand, it was quite fun! We were then off to the state of Washington, to Mt St Helen's, an active volcano. The drive there was quite long but well worth it. Lava, ashes and proof of recent activity are everywhere, including the still smoldering crater. Also of interest was the nearby lake (Meta Lake?) ... read more

6am, yes they have that in America too. We had to get up super early to pick up our rental car and head out to Mt St Helens. The car in question was the stunningly mediocre Dodge Neon. Essentially it astounded us by not being totally useless, although when you put your foot down all that happened was that the engine sounded as if it were about to explode. The trip to St Helens is pretty straight forward, take I-5 north turn right and when the road finishes your pretty much there, that’s the kind of directions I like. Cesco took the first stint as I didn’t fancy my first go at driving a left hand drive car and an automatic round the confusing signed Portland streets at rush hour (cheers man). Mt St Helens dominates ... read more

A man of good will with a little effort and belief in his own powers can enjoy a deep, tranquil, rich life---provided he goes his own way……. To live one’s own life is still the best way of life, always was, and always will be. Henry Miller LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS Saturday, June 11, 2005 It has been raining on and off all night. The Visitors Center at Mt. St. Helen’s is just a few miles from the campground. Unfortunately we were up too early and the center was closed. So undaunted by the bad weather, we continued up the 50 mile drive up and down the mountains. For some reason there are three or four visitor centers. One at the approach of the park and then the others are well down the road going ... read more
