2008 Pacific Voyage January and a new moon are used as depictions of new beginnings. So it was that with a new moon occurring on 9 January 2008, Marnie and her crew of two, Tigs and Walter, left the dock in Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach with Donna and Mason to wave farewell. Marnie, the 62 foot wooden ketch, was to return home having been commissioned and built in Auckland NZ on 15 April 1985 at the Salthouse Shipyard. The destination to be reached within 10 months of cruising through unexplored waters for those aboard. The first leg of the southward journey was anticipated to be a four day passage, with landfall in Spanish Wells, Bahamas. The first twenty four hours of the journey we experienced favourable winds from the south west as we rounded Cape Hatteras. ... read more

One of the things I've enjoyed the most since moving here was going parasailing. My son treated me to this as an early birthday gift, since the parasailing boats don't go out in the fall (my birthday is late October). I'd been telling myself for years that I would go up, but never did. My son saw to it that I went as high as they go. From 1200 feet in the air with a parachute above your head, you can see the boat that's towing you, but you can no longer hear it! At that height, I could clearly see the dividing line between the red tide that had formed, and the more natural blue-green water further out into the ocean. The city of Norfolk is 15 miles away, but was totally visible from that ... read more

Today we spent the day on Virginia Beach and had some sushi for dinner tonight. It was my first time having sushi and it was a good experience! We had a drink after dinner. Something I am not used to is smoking allowed in bars and restaurants. It's been a long time since I went into a place and asked if I wanted to sit in a smoking vs. non-smoking section. Tomorrow we are going to golf for the day... the weather has been perfect. Here is a list of things I have seen or done for the first time so far: - Jumbalaya in a 7-11 Cup! - Sushi - Ride a motorized scooter - night out in downtown Norfolk - sat on the beach that is next to the largest bridge/tunnel (Chesapeake) - drank ... read more

We ended up spending one full day on the bus, two days at the hotel and the last day at the venue until 3 o'clock in the morning. If I hadn't briefly seen it pushing foam around, I might have thought Virginia Beach was just a place someone had attached the word "beach" to attract visitors. For that split second, it was really comforting. And then, we discovered that my hotel wasn't the beachfront that a large group of people were staying at, but another, twenty miles inland. The amphitheatre was interesting. Having worked at Starwood in Nashville for 4 years (with a seating capacity of just over 18,000), I had a hard time believing this amphitheatre seated a solid 20,000. The main entrance is settled between two big (decorative?) lakes with fountains in the centers. ... read more

1st surf in a long while North America » United States » Virginia » Virginia Beach By greenmachineApril 26th 2007 Recouperation takes time. My best guage for health is not on land, but in the waves. I thought I would test myself in the not yet warmed Atlantic ocean designated around Virginia Beach, VA. Hmmm..... Big time wind gusts and chilly temps require superthick wetsuits and all the energy one's got to make it through. The ocean never tasted so sweet! Live to surf another day! Jeremy and I splurged and got a motel with a HEATED pool. We must have looked rediculous running stra... read more

Hello! We are living in Virginia Beach until such time as the military tells us to leave. I will journal our time spent here and what we see and do! We moved here from New Orleans, Louisiana in March, which is where I spent most of my life. It's truly sad what the city has become since Katrina....landmarks that I was familiar with flattened, destroyed. What a refreshing breath of air this city is. Clean, organized. I look forward to seeing it. ... read more

Virginia Beach Restaurant Last year I took a business trip up to VA for the company I work for. They put me up in a decent Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. I had to go speak at a convention and this hotel was close to the meeting. It was really boring. Experts going on and on about how they will improve production and streamline the process. It just meant more software and hardware to purchase. Afterwards I ate at this great vegan restaurant called Fresh Fare. The next day was the 2nd of a 4 day event. Luckily a fire broke out in the room from the buffet table and we all had to leave. I called up 411 for some meeting rooms in Virg... read more
