Friday, 5 June We got up a bit late since it was raining, then took showers and headed to the beach. Parking was a bit of a problem, since this early in the season some of the lots were closed and those that weren't wanted $5.00 for any amount of time. We finally located some metered spots around 23rd Street where you pay 25 cents for 15 minutes. We strolled along the beach for about an hour and a half. Virginia Beach is much more commercialized than Pensacola Beach, with high-rise hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants everywhere. They do however have it very nicely set up, with a cement boardwalk for pedestrians and a paved path for bicycles, with benches and landscaping along the way. We found out that apparently they were holding some sort of ... read more

We had planned a quiet day today and so slept in a bit and had a later breakfast at our overnight stay in Emporia,VA. The weather was still dry and mild but more overcast than we had seen previously. Spent some time getting video onto our external hard drive we are carrying so we have a backup just in case something happens to the video hard drive.Have finally worked out the quickest method of doing it which has meant converting the files so we can download them. The extra time before departure meant Getchen could do her exercises and watch Regis and Kelly. We headed off into Emporia looking for a plantaton mansion that featured in the Civil War in a small way.We found that it was not generally open to the public but by chance ... read more

Thursday, Sept 4 We filled up with gas in Goldsboro and then went to the Skillet Restaurant for breakfast. Mother had country ham since we were in hog raising country. We drove through tobacco fields on the way to Greenville. Took a side trip through some of the farms to get a picture. In Historic Edenton we had “Elevenes”(Elevenes is like afternoon tea but at 11:00 a.m.) at the Edenton Coffee House and Sisters Gallery with Anita & Glenn Andersen, friends who used to live in Charlotte. It was good to see them and catch up on what they are doing these days. We drove by some of the big old houses in town. We stopped at the Visitors Center and saw the movie on the history of the town which had its own tea party ... read more

Over the last 42 days, Driftwood has traveled to Kyrgyzstan, Santa Fe, Virginia Beach, and Panama. This includes airport stops in Frankfurt, Istanbul, Atlanta, DC, and Chicago. After 6 weeks of almost continual travel, rest is in order and Driftwood performs her “Woman of the Earth” dance. She is accompanied by Vinco. The performance is narrated by Chris, the Master Gardener, and I think part-time Beatnik. If you think you are missing something, come on down to Virginia Beach and hang out awhile.... read more

Hey everyone. This is my first attempt at keeping a travel blog, and I get the feeling I have alot to learn. I'm down visiting Monika (Washington) Stoker and her family in Virginia Beach. When I was on the COLE (Aug '98 - July '01), she arrived in September of 1998 for a 1.5 or 2 year (can't remember now) tour as Fire Control Officer. Needless to say we spent alot of time together. Today, she is on shore duty and will next attend PXO school as she has screened for command. Woo Hoo!!! She's married to Randy Stoker, also an academy grad who works for the DOJ and they have 1.9 kids. Riley is 10 months old and Monika is 8 months pregnant. Scary amount of work, just around the corner. I'm happy that I ... read more
