Today we drove to Shenandoah. Rick and Max hiked the Jones Run Falls and saw part of a bear. Maggie and I relaxed at our campsite in the Loft Mountain Campground. At night we went to a great Ranger program “Water – a Little Drop Goes a Long Way.” This was the final activity to complete their Junior Ranger so the Ranger swore them in afterward. Yay-finally a Junior Ranger Badge!... read more

Well it's been almost a week since I've managed to add a post here. I have been far too busy enjoying my holiday to share with you lovely folk! But now I can catch you up on a week's worth of japes. We left Washington DC bright and early on Tuesday morning in our Jeep Cherokee and, having set up the Go-Pro on the bonnet of the car we were good to go. Our first leg was about a 1.5hr drive from DC to Fort Royal where we stopped for a diner breakfast before turning into the Shenandoah National Park and the top of the Skyline Drive. Well. Wow. It was a glorious, hot and sunny day and we wound our way for a few hours along a road that takes you through the park. It ... read more

Geo: 38.4953, -78.4497Today we awoke in a town called Waynesboro and we had a quick breakfast before heading off to the Shenandoah National Park. There awaiting us was the Skyline Drive, which was a 103 mile drive through the park. We set off on the drive and straight away were blown away by the beautiful views across the park. Luckily there was 75 overlooks which you could park in to admire the different views. As we were driving we stopped at every overlook to make the most of the views and sometimes they were so beautiful we had to force ourselves to move on. Along the trail we had been told to look out for various animals - such as squirrels and woodchucks. However there were three animals we both wanted to see - bears, deers and ... read more

I made a side trip to Harpers Ferry, the famous historical town on the confluence of the Shenadoah and Potomac rivers. Its a fantastic place to visit and really is like a trip into the past. I then drove down through the Shenadoah Valley and did some hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Also visited some places I have to admit I'd never heard of before such as Harrisonburg and Winchester. I was heavily reliant on the old GPS! Some chat on Harper's Ferry below (sorry I have run out of time!). Next stop Buenos Aires. ... read more

After a breakfast of Virginia ham, poached egg, broiled tomato with cheese, and a cranberry-lemon scone with lemon curd we took a tour of the many Alaskan taxidermied animals and fish proudly displayed throughout the Speckled Trout B&B. I sat on a white grizzly bear rug shot by Jim, Kay’s husband, who is an Alaskan fishing guide. We packed the car (forgetting our fresh bag of groceries that was to be our lunch) and sallied forth through the rain driving south on 81 to TN. We picnicked (on our limited remainders of food) at a rest stop off of highway 81. As the weather cleared in the low rolling farmland we enjoyed the bits of fall foliage beginning to color the hills. We arrived hungry and late at the Chanticleer Inn and B&B on Lookout Mountain, ... read more

We visited Shenandoah National Park in Virginia in October of 2011. We spent three days hiking, or trying to hike, in the park. Managed to get on the trails on two of the three days despite just cloudy weather the first day and misty, foggy, rainy weather the last day. The middle day was a total washout with driving rain and wind all day long. We stayed in Waynesboro, VA, one night, in the lodge at Skyland Resort two nights, and the lodge at Big Meadows the last night. Enjoyed the trip even with the bad weather. We saw lots of deer and actually surprised a mother bear and her two cubs on one of our hikes on the last day. They were too quick to run off into the forest before we could get any ... read more
