Day 6 started with waffles and juice at the Super 8 and continued with a short 3 minute drive to Arches National Park. Upon entrance to the park we stopped at the store and bought t-shirts, bags, etc. We continued on to see Balanced Rock, Delicate Arch, and the Windows. We were running short on time so we had to shorten our trip. We did get some amazing pictures. Since we were running short on time, we did not go on the 3 mile hike to the Delicate Arch, we photographed it from the upper and lower viewpoints. It was worth the hike to get a picture of it. From there we drove on to the Navajo Indian Reservation in Teec Nos Pos. This is where the Four Corners Monument stands. It is where Arizona, New ... read more

Ensuite nous sommes allés à Canyonland National Park : Island in the Sky.

Geo: 38.7199, -109.589It was a difficult slumber last night; with so many people in one confined space, there was lots of movement in the night. At around 2am, it really started to pour, and the rain did get past our weatherproof shelter but fortunately it only rained into sleeping bags and rucksacks and most of our heads remained dry. One girl did get a mini deluge, but a quick shuffle around and she was able to go back to sleep. The early morning noises from camp woke us, ready for our 5-hour drive to Moab. It was a dull, grey day, but there was thankfully no rain. Hot showers were a real blessing and there was no limit on the amount of time we could stand under the steaming jets for - bliss! I enjoyed seeing ... read more

Geo: 38.7199, -109.589Happy Birthday to my first born, Scott. Today we got an early start because we had to drive from Salt Lake City to Moab, UT and see Arches National Park all in one day. It all worked out great, because Arches is a half day park. We left at 8:10 and 68 degrees and turned the car south. Driving through the Salt Lake City area pains me. Salt Lake City is located right in the middle of the most incredible mountains. The vista are fabulous, or they would be but for the power lines, light poles, billboards, road signs, and overpasses. I know that a lot of this is necessary, but billboards? (Maine outlawed billboards back in the 1960's and has thus provided a much nicer travel experience for millions of people.) I struggled ... read more

This was the day for Arches National Park near Moab, UT and then a lot of driving to get to Ogden, UT for the night. The drive was boring, but fine, whereas Arches was, as always, outstanding. Although our motel at Monticello was pretty basic with thin walls, our neighbours were good so we had a great sleep. The hard part was getting up very early for the trip. This visit to Arches was really for Les. I was there a couple of years ago and saw what I wanted; however, I found that seeing it again gave me a good feeling. The other benefit of being there before was that I knew where to go to give Les the best views of the place. We were there for about three hours, but that was what ... read more

Hiked to the longest natural arch in the park today - Landscape Arch. From base to base it measures 306 feet and is one of the longest natural bridges in the world, The total hike to and from is 1.6 miles. A couple of side trails led to 2 other bridges including Tunnel and Pine Tree Arches; less spectacular, however, worth the extra short hikes. I attempted to hike to Delicate Arch, probably the premier arch of the park, but by the time I arrived the parking lot was full. Not much into waiting so I had to settle for a view of this arch from a lower viewpoint. Thankfully I had my telephoto lens so at least I got a glimpse. On my way out of the park I stopped at the balancing rock - ... read more

Over 2000 natural rock bridges are in Arches National Park. I need more time! Today I visited the Windows section and saw Turret Arch, Double Arch and the North and South windows (both arches). I scrambled around here for about 90 minutes before finding Pothole Arch. After a stop at the Garden of Eden ( I didn't name them), I made my way around part of the scenic drive. Did 2 short hikes, one to the Sand Dune Arch. Small but quite impressive. It was hidden between some rock faces and surrounded by sand. Then a short hike to Broken Arch (it isn't). I finished the day with a 2 mile hike along the Park Avenue Trail. You walk along the bottom of a rock canyon eventually seeing The Three Gossips, Sheep Rock and The Organ. ... read more
