Tom and I are now about 70 years old, and this summer are heading north for our second trip to Canada, Alaska, and the western “lower 48”. We’ve recently traded our trusty 2004 Lance truck camper and Dodge truck for a 28 foot Phoenix Cruiser motorhome, so prep work this time involves getting a new recreational vehicle (RV) set up and equipped. Tom does the techy stuff; I do the kitchen, bath and décor stuff. Maggie is purely decorative. It’s worked pretty well so far. Current plans call for us to drive to Canada through Michigan and travel west on the Trans-Canada Highway. We’ll be able to explore the northern coast of Lake Superior and visit Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which we haven’t visited yet, as well as Alberta. We’ll catch the Alaska Highway at its Dawson ... read more

Hi guys: We have finally kicked off our 2018 Great America Road Trip. We conceived this idea back in January when I closed the purchased of a new Acura RDX. We have a tradition of breaking in our new vehicles with a fun and exciting road trip. The first two were in Europe followed by trip to Massachusetts in 2016 in my new Nissan Rogue. I had many ideas for this trip including a drive all the way to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. Finally we decided that if we drove too far the return trip would be difficult. So, we decided on a North-South drive estimated to be approximately 2800 miles with visits to cities which we have yet to visit together in the past. Plus, our next door neighbors in Atlanta, Charlie and Sharon Trense, ... read more

The purpose of my whole trip was to come and support my alma mater's tennis team in the SEC tournament, taking place in Knoxville, TN, from April 26-30. I'm also one of the unofficial photographers of the team, and several of the players' parents have told me that they like my photos the best. Aw shucks. They're probably just being nice, but I'll take the compliments. I like taking pictures, particularly of sports, and plus I know several of these players. It's always easier to photograph a subject that you're actually interested in. And since these guys do a lot more winning than losing, it makes the matches (and following the team) that much better. Since my Racquet Dawgs (that's what I call the UGA men's tennis team) tied for 1st place in the regular season, ... read more

Fear and consternation surged across my skin like a tingling rash. I stared forward, barely noticing the red light through the bug scarred windshield. I was frozen, like a deer in the headlights as I rode out the long silence with a self-lamenting panic. Frank and I had been together only a matter of weeks when he asked if I would be his mountaineering partner. For him, alpine climbing was a fantastic childhood dream that was now within reach. He grew up reading about Mallory and Irvine, fantasizing of scaling remote peaks, imagining what it would be like to stand where so few humans have dared to go. Hoping to one day have a partner to grow with, to explore with, and to share that intimate journey and process with. From the driver seat, I sensed ... read more

Tom and I are retired, living in east Tennessee in the US. We’re leaving in mid-February 2017 on an extended trip to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Japan. We hope to re-visit old favorites and old friends, and explore areas we haven’t been able to visit in the past. We try to travel light, each carrying a small backpack (25-30 pounds maximum) and a smaller daypack. On past trips, we’ve learned that suitcases are useless and that you can carry everything you need in a small pack, just not everything you might want. (As a woman, I find that by the time I get home, I never want to see these clothes again.) I’m sure that we’ll add to the lessons we’ve learned on earlier trips as we travel. These long trips are made possible by friends ... read more

Here we are after a whirlwind (by that I mean tornado) few weeks, having safely arrived on February 17th. We’ve been made very welcome so far in the land of big fridges, big trucks, big cars, correspondingly big car parking spaces, big portions and big friendly southern Tennessee accents. In fact, everything is supersized apart from the bathtubs, which are all really, really small. The discovery was treated by Tom with almost the same disdain as when he realised that they don't sell Shreddies in America ("Can we go home now??"). No time to be jetlagged when we got here, we spent the first five days on a lengthy apartment hunt. Along the way we fell into some of those lovely interminable administrative loops which crop up every time I move countries. It is, as far ... read more

We have finally arrived in Knoxville, TN after a long day of packing and repacking, multiple goodbyes, and inadvertent "spring" cleaning! I am helping one of my closest friends that I've know since high school, Katie, move cross-country from Spartanburg (Sparkle City, SC to San Diego, CA. She applied for and received a prestigious post-graduate school internship in Music Therapy. We hope to arrive in San Diego by New Years Eve in time to bring in the New Year. However, Mother Nature may have different plans for us as there have recently been floods and mudslides in Tennessee, tornados in Mississippi, icy roads in Texas, and a blizzard known as "Winter Storm Goliath" in New Mexico! Don't worry, we promised our mothers we would text or call them every night and let them know we made ... read more
