Four weeks without phone or internet and I survived! We spent a few weeks in Iowa at a Winnebago Rally. 1400 rigs. Each state was represented. There was a military chapter and they played the bugle at 7 am and 10 pm. Non-stop bands entertaining and suppliers set up to give your rig a once over. We found out we are not "rally" people. But had to go to one, once. So we set out for peace and quiet in the Badlands of South Dakota. This is as far as the two of us have been together, driving. We camped in the National Parks in the Badlands and the Blackhills. This meant roughing it. Eating on paper plates, conserving water and taking military showers since there were no hookups in the National Parks. Majestic! More than ... read more

We left Yellowstone on Thursday, August 6th, and headed east on Wyoming state highway 14. We stopped at Cody, Wyoming for burgers at a roadside bar where everybody else was either a cowboy or a biker. We felt a little out of place (i.e. scared manureless) in our yuppie REI gear. We spent the night sleeping next to rattlers in the beautiful red Bighorn mountain range. Luckily, we didn't meet any of our rattler neighbors. We got up early next morning and after a slight delay (highway closed for an hour), we drove into South Dakota to see the presidents in stone - a childhood dream of Eva's. That afternoon we were staring up at the magnificent nostrils of Abe, Thomas, Ted and George at Mount Rushmore. Ever since Yellowstone, we had been noticing a lot ... read more

Amazed - There are few things that amaze me anymore but The Badlands are a place I will not soon forget. The landscape here is absolutely amazing in its ruggedness. You have to respect those early settlers who came here with nothing but horse drawn wagons, few supplies, and their wits. I didn’t sleep very well last night. They only get 14 inches of rain a year here and last night I swear they got at least 2 of them. Karma is a b*tch. Thunderstorms came through for about 2 hours. Yea… I was scared; getting zapped in my tent is not the way I want to go out. Woke up when the sun came out, packed a daypack and set out. Hiked 4 different trails for a total of just over 10 miles, I’ll sleep ... read more

Today was one of the most empowering, exhilarating, stressful, nerve-racking days of my life. It is amazing to be out on the open road, but you soon realize that you have no one to lean on but yourself. All is well though, I have reached the badlands and this place is amazing. Time to really start the adventure. Until tomorrow. Cheers, Josh Lesson of the day: Coffee makes any car ride more enjoyable. ... read more

Day 3: Monday, July 27, 2009 Badlands National Park Okay…here we go, got some Badlands action going on…I arrived at the park around 3 p.m. As my computer was dead, I was anxious to “splurge” on an electric site so that I could keep up with the ‘ol blog (I don’t want to feel anxious to post…so if I miss some days, it’s because I have no access to electricity). At the gate, I was informed that there were two campgrounds, one primitive, and one “non-primitive” with water service only (no electricity and just pit toilets). I choose the “non-primitive” one, and set off on a 12 mile drive on a gravel road to the camp. The Badlands, which are aptly named, by the by, are a series of hot, mild savanna-like places with large rolling ... read more

Well, we decided to leave a day early as Nathan starts a job on July 23rd. We were only 1.7 miles away from home when Katie had to break into the munchies and started to show signs of bordem. The first leg of out trip is a 10 hour drive to the Badlands of South Dakota. We finally arrived at the Badlands! Amazingly everybody survived the ride. We drove around 650 miles to get here and we all agree that the drive was worth it (except katie). The rock formations are amazing, especially the wide open views of the landscape. Nathan took alot of GREAT pictures that we will post soon enough. Tomorrow we are on to the Black hills.... read more

All is well on the second day of the trip. We've been driving so much it feels like a week had passed. The first place we stayed was in Dells Wisconsin and I must say, it was pretty crazy in a touristy-sensory overloady kinda way. It was the largest indoor waterpark/amusement park/resort. I'm getting tired just thinking about it. The water slides were pretty amazing though. Honestly, my favorite part about the Dells was where we had dinner last night. It was an old cheese factory that was turned into a restaurant and everything was very fresh and tasty as heck. Right now I am sitting in the back seat of the van, Stacey is boppin' at the wheel to some sassy R&B, Henry is cracked out on his nintendo DS, Marin is watching cartoons, and ... read more

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: 2009 GREAT WESTERN ADVENTURE WEEK SEVEN: CUSTER , SD TO BARABOO , WI Tuesday, July 07 Custer is a cute Western town on the edge of Custer State Park. After checking out of President Harrison’s Cabin we drove into Custer to a little bistro for an egg burrito (I also had a great chai) before heading out to the park. We then drove along the edge of the park for some time before seeing anything. Suddenly as we rounded a bend a herd of buffalowere on the crest of a hill munching on yellow sweet clover. It was a beautiful site! The smell of the buffalo announces their presence long before you see them and if you are lucky to get close enough you can hear them snorting and chewing the clover. ... read more
