Broke camp Thursday morning at Thousand Trails Wilmington OH to the sounds of distant thunder. I watched my weather app like a nut and knew we needed to leave Wilmington pronto. The storm cell was moving from west to east and we were heading east; that in our favor. The storm followed us for a long time and there was quite a bit of air to ground lightening but we prevailed and only got sprinkled on a little bit. I have complained about bad roads before on this trip, but the stretch of I70 from Columbus OH we travelled was a disgrace. Teeth rattling, bone jarring, dish rattling trashy road. Flight 93 I only have a couple things to say about this Memorial as the signs about the event tells the whole story just in case you don't remember it. (try double clicking on the photos to make them large enough to read.) We were there about 10 days prior to the 10th anniversary and the Park was getting ready for that event. The day was really, really hot and I sat on a bench while Valerie walked out into the field. We had expected the field to be a cornfield as it had been described in the news, but it was covered over a vacant strip-mined coal hill that had some hemlock trees growing along the edges. Today became an important lesson on how road trips differ from regular vacations. The latter are normally planned similar to a military campaign, with a schedule that must be precisely executed. On road trips, by contrast, the schedule is a guideline at best. Travel contains dozens of unexpected changes and spontaneous adventures, and adapting to change becomes the key. Today I was forced to throw out all my plans, and ended up at the most meaningful place of the trip yet.
