Today was just a great day! We slept in a little as we are only 15 miles away from the action and nothing opens until 9:00. So we had a leisurely breakfast and hit the road about 8:30. Our first stop of the day was at The Hershey Story, The Museum on Chocolate Ave. We thought we would get to know a little about the founder and get some idea what it takes to make chocolate. We arrived at about 8:50, so we hung around for a bit waiting for them to open. The museum was nice, but not as in depth as I had hoped. The building is 2 stories, but the actual museum only occupies the second floor. It went in a little to the early life of Milton Hershey, who started out as ... read more

We're still on our backwards travel sequence where we sightsee in the morning and travel in the afternoon, but that should be straightened out by tomorrow. So we woke up this morning to a bright sunny day, with a forecast for partly cloudy to sunny with temperatures in the upper 80's - perfect traveling weather! After a quick breakfast in the hotel bistro, we packed up the bike and headed out on our 1.5 mile journey to the Thomas Edison Historical Park in West Orange, NJ. While most of Edison's early inventions took place in Menlo Park, NJ, that facility is no longer there. It was bought by Henry Ford, and most of the buildings were dismantled and brought up to Dearborn, MI where they are on display as part of The Ford Museum which we ... read more

So bear with me if there are misspelled words and the grammar is incorrect. Thanks for reading. Also, I've changed the format for the most recent entry to be on top.Verna fixed us the most delicious breakfast. We enjoyed talking with her and learning more about her love for people, photography and travel.Glenn and I then left for the day. Since we had done ALL of our visits on Monday, we kinda had a "day off". Although we could have done the "Sights and Sounds" production, we decided instead to go to Hershey, Pennsylvania. I have always wanted to go to this charming town. It was ... read more

Wednesday, September 26, we said goodbye to the Fair and headed back onto highway 42 south toward the general direction of Hershey, PA. No question, we are now deep into Coal Country. As we were navigating the hills and valleys we climbed up to the top of one hill to find a curious sight. There were streets all laid out with sidewalks like there had been a town there, but there were no houses. Some of the walks had steps leading to houses, but the houses were gone. At the bottom of the hill about 2 miles further on, we stopped at a restaurant in Ashland and Valerie went in for a mid-morning snack and asked what had happened to the town?? She learned that the town was built on top of a coal mine and ... read more

10/02/2011 Today we toured Hershey's Chocolate World Attraction. We took a ride through a simulation of a chocolate factory at work. We also took a trolley tour of the grounds, where we saw the birthplace of Milton Hershey. Milton Hershey went bankrupt several times before becoming successful in the candy business. He actually was first successful in the carmel candy business, before learning that the English was buying his carmels and then covering them in chocolate. He began developing his own chocolate factory, and the rest is history. We saw the mansion that he built for his wife Catherine. Together they started a school for orphan boys, know as The Milton and Catherine Hershey School. Later it was opened to girls, and to this day operates for any underpriviledged children. School cost the students absolutely nothing, ... read more

I've never done a proper visit of New England, so we decided to get down to brass tacks and planned one doozy of a trip! We began in Harrisburg, PA, mainly for its proximity to Hershey and the corresponding Hershey's Chocolate World. A site never to be missed, we wanted to pay homage to the wonderful chocolatier and worship at their altar. Flying into Harrisburg was wonderful. We approached the runway from the north, so we didn't get a great view of 3 Mile Island like I was hoping for, which is just south of the airport. But the view was still magnificent of downtown Harrisburg and the Susquehanna River. Being the general science geek I am, especially with nuclear stuff, I insisted we drive down to a view of 3 Mile Island's reactors and cooling ... read more

Hey there everyone! We are still hanging out in here in Pennsylvania trying to figure out what there is to see and do. Yesterday we went to the town of Hershey where the BIG Hershey chocolate factory is. It is very interesting how they advertise it as "free" but once you get there you find out that they charge you for everything that you want to do except for breathe. We were able to take this little Disney type ride that explains the process of how the candy is made and of course it dumps you off in the gift shop. It was fun to see all of the candy that they make and of course we spent our money on buying candy for us and t-shirts for the boys instead of going to amusment type ... read more

Hi. It's Ryan. Yesterday we left Ohio and then we went to West Virginia for lunch. We ate at Quaker Steak and Lube. Then we left for Pennsylvania and went through 5 tunnels. There were alot of mountains. Then we went to Hershey Pennsylvania and took a tour of the factory. We watched a 3D show that had all the Hershey characters. Then we went to our hotel and we went to bed. Yesterday was fun. Hey, it's Kevin here. The first stop was at the Quaker Steak and Lube. I gave the bathroom 5 stars because it had nice tiles on the floor. I also liked it because there were signs in there and one said, "No Dumping." By the toilet the sign said "Recycling Center." Then, by the urinals, one said "Caution. Do not ... read more

Today, Jerome and I went with Mitch to Hersheypark in Hershey. First, we had breakfast downtown at a place called Roxy's in Harrisburg and I saw the Pennsylvania capitol building. Hersheypark is an amusement park, similar to Six Flags, and has many roller coasters. We spent the day there riding the best coasters there. It was really fun- it had been a while since I had been to a park with roller coasters. I also got into the wave pool and then we went to see Mitch's show/band at the amphitheatre. After the show was over, we hit the road with our destination: Washington D.C.! It took us about 2.5 hours south of Hershey to get there. When we got there, we met up with several people that Jerome knows to eat Mexican food! It was ... read more

Today, the weather was very cold and rainy. We are glad we did not camp out last night! After a very late morning sleeping in at Days Inn, we departed for Hershey, where we would be staying with Jerome's friend, Mitch. The drive, though raining a lot, was very beautiful. Mountains began to appear and I discovered a new perspective of them- they are very beautiful surrounded by mist and fog. One downturn of the drive was that it was a tollway. Once we got to Hershey, we visited Hershey's Chocolate World. This is the visitor center for Hershey corporation. We took a free tour that showed the chocolate-making process. We then took a trolley ride through Hershey, learning about and seeing the places and history of the town and of Milton Hershey. It was very ... read more
