February 2-16, 2006 Port Angeles, Wash. - Portland, Ore. Mile 323 Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! See the cute Valentine I made for Jeff at a Montesorri school gathering? It’s in the shape of Matilda, our trusty VW van. Which has been running like a charm, by the way, since its engine trouble last month. And we have finally left our home state of Washington! On Feb. 11 we crossed the Columbia River into Oregon, so the road trip is officially interstate. This is our last day in Portland, where we have been lying low for the last four days because… …I (Shelly) got sick. Yes, the latest test for us intrepid trippers has been a cold-turned-sinus infection for yours truly. The origin of the virus is unknown, but since every family we’ve been staying with has ... read more

Wanting to lift my winter-weary spirits, I decided to explore the historic downtown area of Stayton at the first hint of the sun emerging from its grey, dreary cover. This small town located only 15 miles east of Salem gained its name from one of its first settlers, Drury Stayton. Stayton built a sawmill along the North Santiam River in 1870, and helped to plat the downtown area, which was incorporated in 1891. Stayton wanted to name the town Florence, in honor of his daughter, but was hindered from doing so because a town along the coast had already laid claim to that name. Instead, he bestowed the name upon one of the main streets. On Florence Street, I found a row of four tidy bungalows originally used as worker’s cottages due to their proximity to ... read more

I finished my business in Medford and drove up to Salem today. What a beautiful state! It's so freaking green. I was thinking the cows don't know how lucky they are with all the lush grass to eat. It rained all the way...guess that's why it's so green. Had a few more human encounters...people don't seem too happy here. I don't know why.... read more

I flew into Medford, Oregon from Witchita, Kansas yesterday. It was a hell of a travel day because I worked in Sterling, Kansas the night before, and there wasn't time to sleep before the 7:30am flight. Then there was a 4 hour layover in Denver, and finally, a 3 hour flight to Medford. Luckily, I got last night off...don't think I could have worked anyway after being up for over 30 hours. My first impressions of Medford-wet, green and so far the people don't seem too friendly. I hope that changes, but I'll only be here for another day or two.... read more

What is the first order of business when one reaches McMinnville Oregon? Watch a demonstration of Harry Potter killing dung bugs of course. Then came the hamster gathering foray to PETCO, and a bike ride with puddles in my shoes. What would you do? I have spent the last three days with my good friends Jenny and Stewart and Rebecca (9) and Nick (6) at their home in McMinnville Oregon. The first night we went to PETCO to pick out two hamsters, Fluffy and Fuzzball. Being Rebecca’s Godfather, I naturally took the camera to record the adventure. Since no one has never told me what being a Godfather means I figure this as good as any role model. Turns out you are not supposed to take cameras into PETCO because the animal rights folks have ‘doctored’ ... read more

Hello All! Well it has been a while since our last blog - but after an awesome xmas trip we thought we would share with you some of our photos and adventures. How could we refuse and invitation from a long lost uni friend of Mel's, Courtney and her husband Dave to join them for Xmas. We headed off at the crack of dawn taking the bus to Seattle (thankfully no rubber gloves were involved in crossing the border just a few questions and we were back on the bus and on our way) at Seattle we boarded a train to Portland. The train was great - lots of leg room, very relaxing with views of the water where we spotted some seals! We loved visiting Portland, Courtney and Dave showed us around including a trip ... read more

TravelBlog was having problems with their image server, so this entry for December 29th was a little delayed. Our morning began with a leisurely breakfast of eggs over easy and spectacular coffee, courtesy of Diego's christmas gift - an espresso maker that requires a college degree to operate! We stayed warm with Diego and Tara's wood pellet fireplace and rejoiced in the company of like-minded environmentalists. In the early afternoon, we departed to explore Downtown Portland. Our first stop - Powell's Book City, the largest used book store in the United States. Imagine an entire city block of new and used books, rooms opening into more rooms, shelves upon shelves, over three stories of books in all! We walked around in awe, and after getting a cup of tea in the coffee shop, realized that we ... read more

We woke up this morning in the Presidential Canopy Suite of Portland's White House. After receiving several birthday calls from friends and family, The Boy (and The Girl) went downstairs for a delicious birthday breakfast. Over French toast and bacon, we enjoyed the company of our fellow inn patrons. Across the table, sat a couple from Seattle, Matt and Amy, who were spending a few days in Portland on vacation. We told them about our West Coast Adventure and smiled as we discovered that Matt works at Adobe Macromedia in Seattle in the Sales and Support department. He explained that Adobe Macromedia was undergoing several exciting changes following their recent merger, and was hiring in many departments. We still do not know where our path will take us, but in honor of our West Coast Synchronicities, ... read more

Please Note: The following entry was meant to be posted on the night of the 27th. We are definitely not in Kansas anymore. We began our journey in Crescent City, CA at the Comfort Inn overlooking the beach and lighthouse. Jack, our generous manager, happened to have a double queen with a view of the water available, which he gave to us for the price of a single. The sound of the enormous waves outside rocked us to sleep. In the morning, we discovered that the storm had brought with it some curious oddities. We won't go into too much detail, but please remind us to tell the tales of the 3-legged dog, Jack and the Mystery Shoppers, the "Christian Sea Monster", the "freakin' huge" seagulls, the drive-thru teller in the stall next door, the "Pacifier ... read more
