We woke up this morning in the Presidential Canopy Suite of Portland's White House. After receiving several birthday calls from friends and family, The Boy (and The Girl) went downstairs for a delicious birthday breakfast. Over French toast and bacon, we enjoyed the company of our fellow inn patrons. Across the table, sat a couple from Seattle, Matt and Amy, who were spending a few days in Portland on vacation. We told them about our West Coast Adventure and smiled as we discovered that Matt works at Adobe Macromedia in Seattle in the Sales and
Support department. He explained that Adobe Macromedia was undergoing several
exciting changes following their recent merger, and was hiring in many departments. We still do not know where our path will take us, but in honor of our West Coast Synchronicities, we will be sure to keep Adobe Macromedia in mind! At the end of our breakfast, Matt and Amy recommended different sights around town, but hesitated after reflecting on the impending rainstorms. Jokingly, Amy said that with our luck, the sun would shine despite the unfavorable forecast.

We continued our birthday celebration with a haircut in the historic Rose Quarter of Portland, followed by

a stop a wine store and neighboring coffee shop. With one sweeping glance around the block, we confirmed yet another fascinating feature in this beautiful city: every neighborhood has a wine shop, a coffee shop and a good barber within walking distance. Our next stop was scheduled 30 stories above Portland at the famous Portland City Grill. (Listed
among the nation's top 100 restaurants!) In addition to the delicious lunch menu, the view at the restaurant made The Boy's birthday celebration complete. It shouldn't have surprised us, then, to discover that the Portland City Grill is owned by the same people who recently opened "The Newport Seafood Grill" (which, as you may recall from yesterday's epiphany, is our new favorite restaurant).

We are not sure if it was our luck, or Amy's wishful thinking, but as we took one last glance at the Portland skyline from the 30th floor, the sun peeked out around the cloud covered mountain tops and revealed the Willamette River and the Rose City in all its splendid glory. Portland's gift to Allen!

Our late afternoon and evening were spent in the warm company of Diego and Tara Davila, our family link in the

West Coast. Their beautiful baby (and yes, she really is beautiful) kept them on their toes, and yet they still managed to pull together a delicious salmon dinner, complete with after-dinner espresso and wine. The conversation carried us well into the night, and left us longing for opportunities in the Portland area. Tonight we will sleep soundly, knowing that for the first time in our trip, we don't have to check-out at 10:00 AM!

Special note to Ricki: Wherever you are, we hope you had a wonderful birthday and we can't wait to see you again soon to give you a big birthday hug!
