BryanFlnt - Bryan Flint

Bryan Flint Combining three 'must do before I die' imperatives I will be taking a 5 month sabbatical in 2006. Staying in a destination long enough to learn the texture of daily life, long distance bike touring, and a personal photo sojourn in Ireland all mix to make this my mid-life crisis (some thought I would go for the red sports car). For two months I will travel by bike and Amtrak across the US to visit family, friends, and the great outdoors. Then it is off to Ireland for three months for the sole purpose of making all of you jealous. All this without eating wheat, rye, barley, oats, dairy, or soy. Let the adventure commence.

After rolling up my yoga mat and riding the rails like a new age hobo I come to find out at the end of my year of travel and wanderlust that Time magazine has nominated me “Man of The Year”. (please see three slide shows - just click on the film strips above - and the map of my trip to understand why) Tempting as it is to say “well of course”, I am compelled to say I have been humbled by this years I have traversed. Humbled to the mystery of life’s path when I just let go. Amazed at [View Full Entry]

I have just finished a two week trip to Germany to visit with my good friends Roberts and Sarah and her kids. It’s funny, I just spent what most people get as an annual vacation relaxing and recovering from 5 months of travel. Most days I slept in and took a nap on top of that. Besides the F1 race and a trip to the Porsche factory in Stuttgart (that will get it’s own report) I did very little touring or picture taking. Part of it is that Sarah is a good mother and she took good care of me. “Bryan, [View Full Entry]

A little less then two weeks ago I arrived in Germany to stay with good friends. After a month of constant movement I collapsed for two days (More on the whole of my Germany visit later). Fair warning to all blog readers: this entry is chalk full of pictures of cars and manly things. Exhausted and tired of traveling I immediately took off on another adventure. To see a Formula One race, the European Grand Prix at Nurburgring Germany. What the Super Bowl is to America each F1 race is on the world stage. Six-time Champion Michael Schumacher is to the [View Full Entry]

Now that I have your attention, her comes the interactive fun part of a blog. I want your opinion on something. One of my goals of this trip was to take time to think about how to use my skills to make the world just a little bit better then I found it. So here is a question that I would like your input on: “What do you think will transform society in the next 20 years?” Using the comment section give us a word or phase that strikes you when you read this question. It can be a political or [View Full Entry]

The following are some odd tidbits to wrap up my trip to Ireland: Things I learned in Ireland: I love being outdoors. I have been rained on in Ireland, snowed on in the Grand Canyon, had the sun shine in Alaska, survived a drought in Arizona, baked in the sun in Germany and it is all worth it because it put me closer to nature. If you are dressed right it is the best place to be. Ten to twelve days is a good length of time for a bicycling vacation. The saying "rules where meant to be broken" was written [View Full Entry]

After a week of mixed-to-good weather, strong Irish music, selling my bike, and returning to my home base of Cappoquin I have reached my last weekend in Ireland. Stay tuned because over the next couple of weeks I will fill you in on some more of the details and do some wrap up of the trip and what I learned - plus a spacial interactive opportunity bonus offer. How is that for a deal? In sort it is turning out to be a bitter sweat ending. I am tired in the core of my body and ready to settle back down [View Full Entry]

On Tuesday I took a bus that got me into Galway at 11:00 pm. The only places that take people in at that hour are Youth Hostels. The Sleepzone was hoping with the energy of a collage dorm on a Friday night. Not surprising since this was spring break in places like France and Spain. The poolroom was full of French teens. The Internet room was full of female American exchange students talking about hair coloring. The TV room was full of their male counterparts, sprawled out on the couches watching baseball from America. Each and every one of them had [View Full Entry]

Glengarriff Riding into this small gateway town to the Beara Peninsula I felt like I was in a Northwest logging town. Maybe it was the wide torn up street. Maybe it was the larger then life storefronts. Perhaps it was the American style roadhouse I stayed in, complete with a herd of Harleys in the parking lot. It was definitely the country music played to a drum machine in the pub. Turns out that one man bands playing poor renditions of American favorites with the assistance of a synthesiser or drum machine are quite popular here. Just goes to show that [View Full Entry]

"If I have learned anything from cycling it is to always spit to the side." - Bryan Flint, April 2006 There is an allegory to the statement "Be careful for what you wish for because you just might get it." It is "Be careful what you disparage, for it might just be the thing you need." On Sunday night I stayed at a Hostel connected to the Dzogchen Beara Tibetan Buddhist retreat center on the Beara Peninsula on the Southwest coast of Ireland. On Tuesday I returned and am staying to participate in a Buddhist retreat over Easter Weekend. There are [View Full Entry]

At the end of the last week I had several experiences that demonstrate the reason I came to stay in one place for an extended period of time. The weather improved and I found myself out on the streets of Cappoquin with my camera more often. Counter to my fears, people did not go running for their doorways. Many folks were happy to have their picture taken and a few people who I had passed on the street came up to me. One guy reveled that he had a collection of over 200 pictures from old Cappoquin. He had grown up [View Full Entry]
