Well, I redeemed myself for forgetting to turn the heat on night-before-last. Last night I forgot to turn it down! Yes, it was a little on the warm side when I woke up. I got up to look out the window (and open it too) and was greeted by wind, clouds, and rain. Not a little sprinkle of rain, it was pouring! After removing my head from the freezer to cool down, I decided to head back to Government Camp (Can you tell I like this place?) and see if there was anything I could get into. I ended up stopping in at Mt. Hood Adventures and talking with Mandy. Mandy told me about the only thing I could do on foot today would be to rent a pair of snow shoes and hike in the ... read more

As I begin the drive to Rhododendron it begins to snow! I am glad I played golf yesterday when it was only cold and windy. Today, it is very, very windy, cold, and it is snowing. The wind is driving the snow in sideways as I drive away from the Sunriver Resort. Thanks to all the miles I put behind me yesterday, I only have to drive a little over 100 miles to the log cabin I have rented on the banks of the Sandy River. As I drove through Bend, Oregon, I was in need of a hair cut. It was on my “to do” list before I left home but never found time “to do” it. I stopped at a place called Creative Experiences and a very nice lady named Jennifer gave me a ... read more

I knew something was wrong this morning when I woke up and could see my breath hanging in the air over me as I lay in the warm bed. Then it occured to me that I had turned the heat off when I built the big fire in the fireplace last night. When I fell asleep on the couch, I forgot to turn it back on before I went to bed. Needless to say, I made a mad dash downstairs to turn the heat on. I dressed quickly and decided to go back to Government Camp and take the road up to Timberline Lodge. It started to rain as I was leaving the cabin, so I was thinking it might be snowing pretty good in Government Camp and at higher elavations. I was right! The five ... read more

I walked outside last night and I could hear the wolves howling. They seemed to be everywhere. The sky was clear and I could see millions of stars. The cool breeze felt really good...then I headed back in to sit by the fire. :-) I awoke this morning and looked out the window. Did I mention it was going to be cold and windy today? I put on my long-johns and headed for the golf course. Crosswater Golf Club is the site of one of the Majors for the Champions Tour. I checked in at the Pro Shop, loaded up the rental clubs, and headed to the driving range. I knew immediately that I could not play with these clubs. The starter came over (I was the only person on the driving range) and we began ... read more

I intended to sleep late this morning but I awoke on CDT after going to bed on Pacific Time...again. I tried to go back to sleep but could not. So I got up, packed up, and hit the road. I knew where I was going but wasn't sure of the route. I just knew I wanted to stay off the Interstates. Carson City is the State Capital of Nevada. It has a small town feel to it, and unlike Reno, has a unique character to it. I really liked Carson Valley. What a beautiful place! Today's trip would require me to go back through Reno as I made my way north. I think I finally figured out what bothers me about this place. Besides being ugly, it just doesn't belong here. As I drove back through ... read more

Hello, everyone! Well, we're settled back in at home now, and wanted to send out some pictures of our time in Bend. When we got up Tuesday morning, the day that we left, it was snowing! Of course, it's always amazing for us to see snow, but at the end of April.......come on! Actually, it snowed off and on until after we reached Mt. Shasta in northern California. It was in the low 40's, so it didn't accumulate, and the roads were fine. It was great to see my brother and his family. You'll see pictures of Mark, his wife Betsy, their daughter Emily and their son Zac, along with his girlfriend Chelsea. Their house sits on a large lot that borders an irrigation canal; there are great walking paths on either side, and I ... read more

After an absurdly brief overnight in Portland I set out for Flint Rock, California, taking the 101 down from Lincoln City, Or. My trusty mileage map said it was just over five hundred miles. I knew that it would take longer than the 8.5 hours projected because I'd have to stop and stretch my legs, and grab a beer or two (for later) at the Rogue Ales Public House in Newport. ... read more

I'm totally scared of birds. My mother has an infinite fear of the feathery friends and she instilled shear panic in me dating decades back, when my dad and I tried to save a fallen baby finch with a broken wing and my mom wouldn't let me touch it, or open the shoe box to give it more food or water despite it was crying for its baby momma, insisting it had rabies. (Do birds get rabies? I never thought to ask her then and it's possibly sadder that I don't know the answer now. Not sadder than making the word sadder up though.) I'm pretty sure that the reason my mom hates birds is either her sister or dad or both of them, used to chase her around the yard with a chicken after it ... read more

i left sunset bay today and started driving up the 5 towards eugene and portland. it was kinda nice to get off the 101 and go a normal speed on a familiar freeway. the umpqua river runs along the road on the way to the 5, a nice change of scenery. everything up here is so green, it rained off and on until i got up to portland. when i arrived, i checked into the hostel around 5 and jumped on my bike. i cruised around for about an hour then stopped at a bar to get a drink and wind down. i headed back to the hostel to eat food, then figure out the rest of my night. i met 4 australian boys at the dinner table and started chatting them up. they were makin ... read more

today i made my first state crossing!! i shaked my booty when i entered into oregon and took some cheesy pictures. i drove along the 101 from orick, ca to coos bay, or, and camped at sunset bay state park tonight. i stopped in the town of bandon to get some food and got pulled over, i guess they dont drive that fast 'round here. i smiled and declared i wasnt from these parts, in san diego i ride my bike faster then there speed limit. he checked out my license and sent me on my way since i wasnt a felon. the weather was beautiful until about 6 then it started to get a little cloudy and rainy looking, so i decided to stay in a yurt instead of a tent. i checked in to ... read more
