We drove out of Redwood following the curve of a hard charging river. Local men stood up to their knees in cold water, casting thick lines into the foam for Steelheads. We crossed an old wooden, covered bridge and turned onto 101 heading north. We got a break in the weather. Blue sky began tearing ragged holes in the grey overcast. We entered Oregon. The roadway climbed and twisted atop a wooded, shoreline ridge. Fraser Firs packed the steep slopes. We pulled over just outside Brookings into a parking lot. Below us spread a wide sandy beach. Large, jagged boulders were strewn about creating a giant Zen garden. Between them we found deep tidal pools filled with mudskippers, starfish and small octopi waiting for salvation in the next tide. Live mussels and barnacles battled each other ... read more

We woke late, and started our journey up the coast. One of those cool days that make breathing a joy, the smell of the sea and the pines, of course we have to open our windows since everyone is snacking. We traveled to Florence, a long but peaceful ride.... read more

We left Roseburg heading north to Sutherlin and West on 138 to get to 101. It was a great drive - really beautiful scenery and the Dodge handled the hills and corners really well. I, on the other hand, was not as fortunate. Bob is a great driver but I’ve decided that I’m not the best passenger. I white knuckled just about every - even remotely - sharp corner. Visions of streaks of white metal and fiberglass sliding sideways down the highway forced me to hold my breath on several occasions. The very serious gusts of wind coming off the ocean that made my side of the truck so obviously lighter didn’t help any. At any rate, we were able to enjoy some really nice scenery. The ocean is just beautiful and it’s power never more ... read more

Our last long trip in Spring 2009 took us to the Oregon and North California Coast. Our first night was spent in a Yurt and Cape Lookout State Park. Our stay at Cape Lookout was simply an overnight stay, but we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and moon rising while we were there. The first full day of our trip took us along HWY 101 between Pacific City and Brookings. While we spent most of the day driving we did get to enjoy a late lunch at Mo's in Florence and Dutch Bros. in Coos Bay. Evening brought us to Loeb State Park outside of Brookings. We spent the next 3 nights in a cabin in this state park up the Chetco River. Our first morning at Loeb was very wet, but beautiful. We spent most of ... read more

Fourth of July was a day to relax and enjoy the scenery along the Oregon coast. Through a couple of friends who had made a long road trip through the area a year ago, I had heard that Whaleshead Beach - a few miles up the coast from Harris Beach - was something to check out. Since I didn't have a campsite for the night yet (I was going day by day), I packed everything up and headed out around 10:30 in the morning. I stopped by the entrance station and asked about the chance of getting a spot for another night. Nothing was open yet, but 1 - 2 PM was the time I was told to stop back; by that point, some reservations may get canceled and they might be able to get me ... read more

June 1, 2007 ….we’ve been in the southern Oregon coast for the last couple of days. The state park system here is fantastic. Oregon is our primary destination; we’re going to be here about 2 weeks. It’s definitely a lot cooler. It pretty much stays in the mid 50’s and is kind of foggy most of the time. They make some great clam chowder here… it actually seems like we’re in New England. We have to remind ourselves that this is the Pacific Ocean. Will add more to this as the week goes on.. June 4, 2007 - We’re at Sunset Bay state park in Coos Bay. There are lots of sea lions and seals on the rocks around here. Fishing is big time here, we went down to the docks yesterday and bought some ... read more

From the Redwood Forest North America » United States » Oregon » Brookings By HEINRICHSTEIN April 21st 2007 William and Tasha Heinrich We have spent the past week in Brookings, Oregon walking through the redwoods, enjoying the ocean waves, and hiking through the mountain passes. We've seen Paul Bunyan (at the Trees of Mystery), been up the Rogue River, golfed on a Sunday afternoon, hiked through the Jedadiah Smith Redwood Forest (where Star Wars III or VI . . .depending on how you count), eaten a Bunyan burger, went seal/sea lion watching, hiked ... read more

Wake up. Rain. Eat breakfast. Rain. Pack up tent. Rain. Well looks like winter is coming, and the Oregon people advised us that it rains here a lot. Great, I believe them! So on a lousy stormy day, we head back up the coast to check out the biggest natural sea cave in America. Unfortunately the locals were not in it. No the seals and sealions were all out catching fish on a great fishing day. We could see them ducking through the water down below. Heading south the weather did not improve. My sister ended up requiring exercise so we walked around the sand dunes for a couple of hours. I would rather have mountain biked somewhere but considering I would have gotten filthy and there were no hot showers available it was something to ... read more
