Our daughter began study for her Master of Fine Arts degree program at Ohio University (OU) in fall 2019. In November, we made a trip out to Athens to visit. We drove from Northern Virginia to Athens in a single day on Friday. On this trip, we stayed at the Hampton Inn Athens, We would learn that we were very fortunate to get a reservation there. Athens, despite being a university town, does not have a great number of hotel rooms. They book up quickly with conference and sports game day traffic. Saturday morning we drove around town, visited an antique store and did a bit of exploring on foot on our own. After meeting up with Julia and Frank in the afternoon, we walked the central campus, known as Campus Green, and the main street ... read more

Bear with me for I hope this works on the new travel site. It has been a week since communicating with everyone - a ' breather' for all of you. In looking at my notes of places traveled and things seen in the last 7 days I can share a paragraph or two on it. My blog of the 18th was lost and it was a good one! The termination date was supposed to be the 20th but they pulled the rug early. On Friday, the 18th was a Louisville, KY bus trip called the 'Mint Julip Bourbon Trail Tour" to Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, and Buffalo Trace Distilleries. All very old and historic, one dating back to the late 1700's! Saturday was a visit to Louisville's Church Hill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. All ... read more

I slept a lot of the journey, and read quite a bit as well. I was buried under the quilt that Sarah made me, and when I woke up, my hair was all sorts of staticky. Wile we were driving, Kyle said something funny… on purpose! Dana commented that the artist we were listening to was very “summery.” Sarah asked what that meant and she replied that it was light and fresh and sunny and happy or something. Sarah piped in, “It makes you want to put on a pink summer dress and have a picnic.” Kyle added, without missing a beat, “No, no. I’m not a fan ... read more

The count down has officially begun. I am 4 finals, a trip home, and a flight away from 3 months of "you're gonna have such a great time." From June until the end of August, I will be fulfilling my internship requirement as "Recycling Program Management Intern" at Lassen Volcanic National Forest (Park?) in Chester, CA. Let's see what the Wild ole West has in store for this Midwest Bobcat (OU joke, bah duh duh). My flight leaves Thursday morning from Cleveland, hits Phoenix and drops me in Reno. From there it's like an hour and a half car ride. I'm living in "baracks" (can't wait to find out what that actually means...). I really want to carry on my mandolin, you know, bring a little Appalachia with me. Here's hoping. I guess we'll see how ... read more
