This fall I have an internship in Gloucester, MA. To make the 11+hour trip more interesting, my good friend, Sara joined me on an East Coast roadtrip. The goal was Boston to visit a friend from high school. We decided to make things more interesting by stopping through Adirondack National Park in New York state. Honestly, I would recommend everyone spending some time out there. It's the largest(I think?) National Park and it's absolutely amazing. We made stops in Old Forge (thanks for the recommendation, Travel Channel), where we stocked up on local goods at the farmer's market and stopped in at the Cohen Brother's hardware store. Heading out along route 28, we happened upon many adorable, mountain towns. As evening approached we searched for a camping spot. In spite of packed campsites, we were directed ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since an update. Things are getting really busy as the summer winds down. This will probably be my last entry just because the next two weeks I am going to have my mind on leaving and getting ready for school. I already had a dream I forgot to pack all the things in my night stand. Since my last entry I have successfully climbed Mount Lassen, visited San Fransisco, and turned 21. These are all life changing things. We did the whole trip of Mt Lassen in about 4 hours. It's a 2,000 foot ascension and it was just neat. I don't really know what else to say about it except "I climbed a mountain". San Fransisco was awesome. I am going to try and spend some time living there. I ... read more

Well last weekend I finally did some sight seeing around this area. Although every week I write from the "Lassen Volcanic National Park" location, I don't actually work there. I work for the forest service of Lassen National Forest. It's different, but this site doesn't have Chester as a location option, so I could request it, but who has time for that? Anywho, my roommate, Shannon, and I went on the hike through Bumpass Hell. Some name huh? Bumpass was this guy's last name who found the place. He called it hell because he thought this place would be similar to what Dante experienced going through hell. Man was this place neat. The entire park is beautiful (well the parts that we saw). We did about a 4ish mile hike through the boiling mud pits and ... read more

This weekend I traveled to the coast and saw the pacific ocean, the redwood trees, and the most hippie town I think that exists in the United States. It was nice to get out of Chester and see some of the major points of California. The pacific was awesome and freezing, but we went swimming anyway. I found 3 giant green anemones and some baby shrimp. Oh and my camera died right before this so I have like 12 pictures from the whole trip, half of which are of state route 299 because it was ridiculously smoky. The next day we hit up the farmer's market which is like the focal point of hippie-dom for the week. We were sitting around listening to polka music in the plaza where we met this girl from Baltimore who ... read more

Life has finally settled into a "normal." I always think it's cool when that happens. You move somewhere, or go back to school and it's hard to get in the swing of things and before you know it, you have. Well I put in a picture of fire camp cause it looks really neat and I feel like it's almost overwhelming to see that many tents in one spot. The fires are becoming more and more a commonality to my life. We gage the days by how bad the smoke is. The morning it's more clear and sometimes the winds will shift the direction of the smoke and we'll have a blue sky. They say this will go through the rest of the summer. The fourth of July is this weekend. I have to work, which ... read more

Well forest fires are abound here in Northern California. It feels like war time, not that I would know how that actually feels, but we have firefighters everywhere. They are eating lunch behind our barracks and in our lawn chairs, not that I'm complaining... but it's just a whole different atmosphere to see people just lying around waiting to be told where to go and what to do. Ok I know it's Tuesday, but I have about an hour before the library closes and I have so much to share and I just can't wait until tomorrow! Well this was my first weekend of work. I found out last week my supervisor is moving to Idaho soon so Barbara is my new supervisor, but she went out to San Fran this past weekend and Dave went ... read more

My days off here are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I aim to update on Wednesdays, so I will start that regularity today. I don't have much to report as I have only worked one day, but I have some pictures of the good old outdoors to share. Last weekend I had free to get acclimated and essentially bore myself to death. Everyone I live with was out of town and I barely saw a person around the barracks all weekend. Friday I went into town and that's was when I updated last. Saturday I wanted to go down to Lake Almanor and read. Well, I made it about 8 miles before I decided I was tired and I shouldn't be biking this far on my own. Some of these picture are from that 15 mile + ... read more

3rd day since I've landed in California. Gosh where do I start? Well I live with the archaeologists currently, but there was talk of moving me so I get my own room. I currently share a room with a girl from Ohio, go figure. Ohioans are everywhere I look, I swear. But everyone has been really nice. And the barracks aren't that bad either. It's like a little house with 3 rooms, 2 baths, living room and kitchen. No internet which is bummerirrific. I don't have pictures of the place yet; I'll wait till I find my permanent home. This whole 3 hour time difference thing is not as easy as I thought. This is my first major time zone switch, so give me a break, but last night I went to bed at like 7pm ... read more

The count down has officially begun. I am 4 finals, a trip home, and a flight away from 3 months of "you're gonna have such a great time." From June until the end of August, I will be fulfilling my internship requirement as "Recycling Program Management Intern" at Lassen Volcanic National Forest (Park?) in Chester, CA. Let's see what the Wild ole West has in store for this Midwest Bobcat (OU joke, bah duh duh). My flight leaves Thursday morning from Cleveland, hits Phoenix and drops me in Reno. From there it's like an hour and a half car ride. I'm living in "baracks" (can't wait to find out what that actually means...). I really want to carry on my mandolin, you know, bring a little Appalachia with me. Here's hoping. I guess we'll see how ... read more
