American Wilderness Campground, Grafton, Ohio Dripping with sweat, we managed to break camp yesterday morning. It wasn’t really all that hot at 8:00 - at least wasn’t yet in the 80s, but the humidity made everything we did seem extra difficult. But aside from sweating profusely, breaking camp went smoothly and so did the dump. We made our way out of the campground. Destination was up here in Northern Ohio. We still have one more park to do in this state, and it will take a few days to see it. So we are changing campgrounds. We could have driven Interstate 71 right straight up pretty much all the way to Akron, but since it was less than 200 miles, and we had all day to do it, we decided to take ‘the old highway, US42. ... read more

We were off to a slow start this morning - too much caffeine for Jody yesterday, so she had trouble falling asleep. By the time we finished breakfast and headed out, it was close to 10:00. It didn't really matter, though - we were only planning to visit the sites along the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Road and we were only about 10 miles south of the park. Of the 13 designated Park Attractions, there were 8 we planned to visit. Most of the others were related to train stations that we had already done yesterday. The main park road is called Riverview Road and runs about 26 miles from the north entrance to the south entrance of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's really a strange national park, as it is not remote or isolated, it ... read more

It was a nice peaceful Sunday morning in Cleveland when we awoke. It had been threatening rain all weekend, and today really looked like the day. The clouds were ominous, but we only had to travel 10 miles for the first stop on our adventure for today. The plan today was a 26 mile each way train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad at 9:00AM. Originally, I meant to book the observation car, but they had a continental breakfast option, so we decided to skip breakfast at the hotel and have breakfast on the train. It turned out that the continental breakfast is served in the parlor car called the St Lucie Sound which is a restored 1946 luxury car with comfortable chairs and couches. Only 7 of us had booked this option, so we ... read more

Last week, we set out in search of our new home, traveling to Delaware, OH and then up to Akron, OH to look at some motorhomes that piqued our interest during our easy on-line on-couch search. It was the coldest weekend of the year, at -25 degree wind chills as we headed north to Akron. Bitter cold and wind as we trudged through the snow on our search. I believe we were the only people in the world seeking to buy a motorhome in Akron that day. All the smart people (along with all the salesmen) were in some convention center in the warmth, in Cleveland, for the big annual RV show. Not the Joneses! Oh well, as the family motto says… “If you are going to be dumb, you’ve got to be tough!” We were ... read more

I am in Ohio and 4 hours from Lock Haven where I will meet Jer for a visit tomorrow afternoon. It has been an effortless trip home so far except for rain and wind yesterday that made me struggle to keep Pennelope on the road. Today was just showers now and then and just light wind. It is clear here so Oscar and I got a really good walk in. See you soon..... read more

We arrived in Akron Ohio for grandson James' graduation from Ellet High School. You would think it easy to get a picture of a 6'5" grandson. Not so during busy graduation week. We did meet his girlfriend Dani. Sweet young lady. We approve. We congratulated our daughter for a job well done...getting him through High School. Now, we anticipate great things from James. He wants to be a music teacher (okay, we bought him his first guitar so what can we say?) He'll get his Microsoft certification (he hopes) this summer. Computer job should fund Akron U. It's up to him now. We wound down afterwards with long-time friends Dave and Sue Deis. Their home in Wadsworth is beautiful and always a warm, heart-felt place to visit. We paid our respects to our military during D-day ... read more

May 2007 John and I return from St. Louis, our last travel together. Summer 2007 was one of the most dramatic summers of my life. I returned home to the horrible news that my travel friend, Whom allso lived in my home town Akron, OH., had died in a car crash. His roomy and good friend Robo, a true dead head whom still travels at the age of 41 and sports a long board, was as well a good friend of mine. I had only been back one day when Robo came rolling into the square looking an absalute wreck and asked for my support through his extreme grief. Of course I could not refuse and soon John became jealous over the attention Robo was recieving from me. I could not turn away from Robo ... read more

Wow, this is day 50 since I left home! It definitely doesn’t seem like I have been gone that long. Yesterday I rode back roads from Charleston, West Virginia to Orrville, Ohio. It was all nice riding, and it was filled with sweeping turns, blind corners, and lots of elevation changes over blind hills. I even had a large bird almost hit me, I have no idea what kind it was. I do know it had a wingspan of at least 4 feet, and it was diving toward me from behind. It was right at a time where I was cresting over a blind hill, down the other side was a very steep slope and the road took a sharp turn at the bottom. It kinda took me by surprise and I was going a little ... read more
