Our day began with a drive through North Dakota. We’d arrived in Fargo after midnight last night, and set out from there this morning. We stopped in Bismark for lunch at a McDonald’s Playplace, and there was a visitor’s center catty-corner from it. I popped in to ask a bit about our drive to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and a helpful woman at the desk told me to make sure and stop at the Painted Canyon Visitor’s Center, which is close to the South Point Entrance. She said the views there are incredible, but it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. We did stop there, and it was located just before the south entrance as she'd described. It was breathtaking! The colors of the rock formations were just stunning, and the views stretched ... read more

Geo: 46.8759, -96.7823We are getting a little short of time so after a quick visit to the Mall Of America in Minneapolis, and a lunch with our two favourite Minnesotan bikers we had to make our way to Fargo North Dakota. The last time we had lunch with Kevin and Art, we were dining at a café in Havana, Cuba and they were trying to find materials to build a life raft since they were running low on currency and were getting concerned about being permanent guests of Fidel. It was good to confirm that they had made it out and that they were cautiously planning their next out-of-country experience. So let's be honest. North Dakota, the least visited state in the Union, is only known for 2 things- the movie 'Fargo' and the fact that ... read more

As befits the first major driving day of our trip, we drove 650 miles. Most people we talk to think that's crazy. For us, it's almost short. We had mostly good weather, little to no traffic and decent roads. We were thinking we would only be able to average 55 or so, but we easily made 60. Why, then, were we on the road 14 1/2 hours? Well . . . We spent almost two hours in Minot. Our local bank didn't have any Canadian cash, so we were directed to the downtown one here. We found a parking place just outside the construction zone and then walked in. There was a line and complications, so that took a while. We also needed supplies, so we drove to a K-Mart. I wanted to find a specific ... read more

Those who follow my blog regularly or who know me personally are aware that state Vietnam veterans memorials are something near and dear to my heart. Last week, I visited the Minnesota Vietnam Memorial in Saint Paul MN and plan to visit the South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial next week; however, the only reference I could find for a North Dakota State Vietnam Veterans Memorial was for the Tri-State Vietnam Memorial Wallin Fargo ND. The aforementioned folks also know that my itinerary is fluid. Initially, I had planned a one week stop in Fargo, but that stop had been eliminated as the 2015 journey evolved. I did, however, decide to break up the 428 mile, 8 ½ hour drive from Minneapolis MN to Bismarck ND with an overnight stop at in Fargo, in part so I ... read more

Geo: 46.8759, -96.7823Today we had an interesting day, crossing Wisconsin and Minnesota, and landing in Fargo, ND. The day began at 7:55 and 70 degrees with overcast skies. And it wasn't long before the rains came. The skies were threatening and it was clear we had a front passing through. At one point, in addition to the rain, we had a heavy black header with a white stripe below it, a patch of blue peeking through and crooked fingers of gray rising from below like many smoke stacks spewing black smoke into the sky. It was a bit unnerving, But eventually we worked our way through it and made it out the other side to fair skies and smooth sailing.Wisconsin provided us with miles of fertile farmland…family farms growing corn and soy beans and wheat and ... read more

Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park-North Unit After yesterday I concluded that Oscar had enough of the traveling so I left him in the camper for the morning. I headed up to the North Unit of the park which is 52 miles north. I debated about going but I really wanted to see it and the day was perfect. There was brilliant sunshine with a possibility of thunder showers in the afternoon but I planned to be back by 2 or 3 at the latest. The speed limit on even the small 2 lane roads is 65 so I put the top down and cruised about 68. The road was a ribbon and everybody went the speed limit or better so no worries about passing. There is a lot of drilling going on out here and as a ... read more

I wanted to mention yesterday about the names of the towns here in ND but when the body is tired the brain in sluggish too. When I first crossed the border it struck me how simple the towns name's are. There is Wheatland, Chaffe, Alice,Mapleton, Buffalo, then they got creative Tower City and Valley City, where I am. Just seems like there was so much more to do here when settling the state than be creative about names. They were a hardy stock coming into a very hostile environment, just "get er done!". Oscar continues to be a terrific traveling companion. We are in a routine now and he plays his part. When there is someone close to the camper he will bark about 4 very aggressive barks then he'll look at me to see if ... read more

The bright sun woke me this morning along with a few hopeful licks from my sidekick. Guess it was time for breakfast. It was 7:10 so I thought it would be good to get up and get and early start. After our walk and smelling the wonderful fresh morning air I got packed up and we were off. I did go to the pub last night, talked to a few locals and found out I was really missing something if I didn't try cheese curds, but I had to get the white ones. They told me about a place just a little out of town, west, and I couldn't miss it because it had a windmill. I had ordered a small pizza for dinner because it's the only thing they make and it is perfection, had ... read more
