We left Lewis & Clark State Park on June 19, and headed south. We have about 2 weeks before we are due in Idaho, and our plan is to head down to Colorado to do some exploring. We have been on several ski trips to CO, but haven’t spent much time there in the summer. Our first stop was Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora, ND. Teddy Roosevelt came to the N Dakota badlands in 1883 to hunt bison, only to find the population had been almost hunted into extinction. He became very enamored with the lush grasslands and beautiful rock [View Full Entry]

26 JUNE 2009 Friday The main goal for the day was to see the Enchanted Highway. The Enchanted Highway is the county road between Gladstone ND and Regent ND. Second camera is a bust. Won’t save files anymore. I don’t have a simple SD card to make sure it is not a SD card failure, all I have is the newer HCSD cards. Bummer it is smaller and fits in a jacket or pants pocket. Spearfish to Sturgis, bought a couple shirts at a bargin shop. 3 for $25. She threw in 2 bandanas. Dealer shirts were $39 ea I passed [View Full Entry]

Rob Keller wrote...The joy of this motorcycle trip was not in putting it together, but in watching the faces of those bikers who went on this trip. Whether it was conquering a certain fear, fulfilling a dream, being part of a team, capturing Kodak moments, creating memories for your daughter, sharing your faith, getting away from the job, or just not having to plan anything but ride...all had their highlights. I've asked them to put their thoughts into words and let us know what they were thinking. I think you will enjoy them. Guys, it was a pleasure to be the [View Full Entry]

After planning for months and officially counting down for 7 weeks, we’re finally on our way. Work went well and I got out 55 minutes early, letting us get underway at 1650 instead of 1800 when the countdown expired. Our goal was to get 200 of the 800 miles to Regina today. Lisa Hardesty wanted all the inane details, so: we stopped at McDonald’s before leaving St Peter. Liam had a hamburger Happy Meal with apple dippers and chocolate milk, while Cole had a chicken McNuggets Happy Meal with fries and chocolate milk. I had a hamburger Happy Meal with fries [View Full Entry]

North to Alaska
Appearances are deceiving
Who says you can't go home?

Hey travel blog readers... Greetings from Bismarck, ND where we are finally starting to have summer. The motorcycles are out in number. Someone asked me if we are having a rally in the area...I said, "No, it's just summer!" It's been almost one year ago that I left on my Alaskan Adventure and a lot has happened since then. I will try and catch everyone up so that I can get everyone current on my travels and where I am headed this summer. The Alaskan trip was the ride of a "lifetime" however; it opened up new areas of riding style [View Full Entry]

We took a side trip out of Williston to visit a couple of historic sites just a few miles up the Missouri River from town. Near the Montana border, the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers converge. Fort Buford was established in 1866 to guard and protect the strategic confluence of these rivers, both important transportation and trade routes of the early west. From this fort the army fought the Indians of the northern plains, and it was at Fort Buford, on July, 20, 1881, that the Sioux chief Sitting Bull surrendered, ending the great Sioux wars. Much of the fort has been [View Full Entry]

The History On May 14, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark left St Louis, heading up the Missouri River on their 2 ½-year expedition to explore and chart the lands recently acquired through the Louisiana Purchase, and to seek a “Northwest Passage” to the Pacific Ocean. On April 17, 1805, almost one year later, they made camp at Short Creek, in what is now North Dakota, one mile from our campground at Lewis and Clark State Park. Sixteen months later on their return trip, they made camp at Tobacco Garden Bay, just across the Missouri River from the Park. It was [View Full Entry]

The change in weather this Memorial Day has caused us to alter our plans a little. Rather than leaving Monday morning, we are going to drive to Fergus Falls, MN Sunday afternoon to beat a rain system that is coming our way later Sunday and Monday. On Monday, we will head toward Mankato for a desination that is near and dear to Grace's heart. She will write about it more later. Our sweet next-door neighbor dropped by with a very nice card which contained a $100 bill! What a great send-off! [View Full Entry]

We left Fernandina Beach on April 29, 2009 on a five month adventure that will have us spending a month in the Northwestern Corner of North Dakota, two months in Southern Idaho, and then back to Virginia for about a month. We won’t be home again until early October. Our first stop is Arlington, VA, where we’ll spend a few days visiting with our son, John, his wife Kemper, and two of our wonderful grandchildren Mary and Robert. We had a great visit. The highlights were the elementary school fair, Robert’s baseball game, Mary’s soccer game, and a nice visit with [View Full Entry]
