The bright sun woke me this morning along with a few hopeful licks from my sidekick. Guess it was time for breakfast. It was 7:10 so I thought it would be good to get up and get and early start. After our walk and smelling the wonderful fresh morning air I got packed up and we were off.
I did go to the pub last night, talked to a few locals and found out I was really missing something if I didn't try cheese curds, but I had to get the white ones. They told me about a place just a little out of town, west, and I couldn't miss it because it had a windmill. I had ordered a small pizza for dinner because it's the only thing they make and it is perfection, had my beer and chatted a bit more. Then I was back to the camper and yes, the pizza was really good. Saved some for today.
I wrote my blog, watched a little tv, that's been a rare treat, and went to bed. There was no rocking me to sleep last night.
We headed down the road looking for a sign that said
cheese and a windmill, if it was there I sure didn't see it. About 35 miles later I did see a sign "cheese and maple syrup" so I turned down the side road. Going down small roads makes me a little nervous because I can't back up towing the car so I have to find a turnaround. I found the drive-way for the cheese store and pulled in thinking the turnaround would be tight but I could make it. Just as I pulled in the store clerk parked in a spot I was going to use to turn around, now I was faced with taking the car off the hitch and turn around separately. So if indeed that was my only option I parked straight so I could remove the car easily. I went inside and explained my problem to the store clerk and he said "No problem, you can turn around on the lawn".They have had lots of rain lately and I expressed my concern about sinking in and he assured me they run big tractor on the lawn. So I went inside and bought some Wisconsin cheese and cheese curds and some maple syrup that was made right
there. I made my circle on the lawn and was off on hard pavement, hooray.
The drive was very enjoyable through the rest of Wisconsin with rolling hills and very green fields. I continue to see crops rather than dairy cows, don't know where the milk comes from for all that cheese. I took some pictures of the barns, I was just fascinated with their design, they are almost all roof. I guess it works well up here in the winter, the snow just slides right off.
I went into Minnesota and picked up 94 the interstate I will take all the way into Montana. We rolled along and the terrain became more flat and just a little dryer looking. Still growing crops, soybean, corn and wheat. I crossed the Mississippi and thought finally I'm in the west.
I was really getting tired and stopped frequently to stretch and I've been trying to drink more water so that required more bathroom breaks. The weather was clear with puffy clouds and temperatures in the low 80's. I did turn on the ac after a while it was getting hot.
I found a "tourist rest" campsite run by
the town of Valley City, ND. It is on Main Street but fairly quiet and has all I need. It is 7:30 now and when it cools off a little outside I'll take Oscar for a walk to the river just down the street. No tv reception so it's early to bed.
