Michigan to Wisconsin
Up about 7:15 and after all the chores and packing up we were on the road by 9:15, pretty good for me. I went to gas up and was just about to get out of the cab when this nice gentleman asked if I wanted a fill up. Why yes, yes I did. He proceeded to pump my gas (thought I was in Jersey) and another fellow started cleaning my windshield on the passenger side. Not just a swipe and goodbye mind you but he used a scrubby sponge and elbow grease. Then the fellow pumping the gas brought his stool over and did the drivers side. I thought I was back in the 50s except for the prices. They explained that the owner has been doing this since the 60s and won't stop, it is a Service Station. You can bet if I'm ever in Mackinaw City I'll buy my gas there.
The next big challenge was to survive the bridge. You have seen pictures by now and know that it is tall and long. 300 ft over the water and 5 miles long over a huge lake with nothing to stop the
wind. There was construction on the bridge so the speed limit was low which lowers my chances of being blown at worst off the bridge, at best in the next lane. I did just fine and after waiting about 10 min in line to pay their tariff, I headed WEST on hwy 2. It was a large 2 lane road cut straight across the countryside with an occasional gentle hill. The speed limit was 55 and I did about 60 most of the time except when there was a little town that always announced it's population. The lowest was 119, the highest 3782, mostly farming towns very little else.
Kat, this is the road for you. Back road with no stops and a casino every 45 min or so.
There was another curious find. I passed a store that advertised Pasties for sale. As I drove past the store I thought it was an adult store and they had modest coverings for sale. Then another one and a few miles down the road another Pasties sign. What is this, and roucus mid-western town? Another sign came up on a bill board, they were little meat pies, served any
time of day. Mystery solved.
The next local sign I saw was in Wisconsin that read, cheese curds for sale. One could make an interesting road trip stopping at all the different places and trying the local food.
Again the weather emergency signal on the radio sounded and warned that there were sever thunderstorms with possible hail and a tornado in certain counties. How do I know what county I'm in. I looked on my phone and no local warning there so I kept my eye on the sky and proceeded. The driving was really easy with very few cars on the road so I was not stressed or tired so decided to go to the next town for a campground about 30 miles away. The sky was getting darker with a blue stripe in the middle and my route took me right down that blue streak.
I'm sitting here in this really nice campground in Cameron, WI where the owner was super nice and let me take up 2 camping spots so I wouldn't have to disconnect the car. Picture
They have a local bar that looks like fun so I think I'll go have
a couple of beers and try their homemade pizza. Then I can just stagger home and flop in bed. Better bring a flashlight.
