Well folks, I have 2 days left until I embark on my journey! And I couldn't be more thrilled, let me tell you. Hopefully I can figure out how to use this thing, and I won't have to bother with stupid e-mail, facebook, or any of that other junk! Except postcards, I will send lots of those, they are fun. This is one of my favorite bridges in Valley City, ND. Valley City has several bridges of all shapes, sizes and age but this tends to be my fave. Had wanted to stop by and see how it looked with some snow on the ground. Had a great blue sky but the white of the bridge tended to blend in with the snow more than I liked. Still a pretty scene. The Sheyenne River is mainly frozen although it was starting to break up a bit. Was worth the stop! [View Full Entry]

Greetings all: Well quite an uneventful day for the most part today! A couple of interesting items though. We stopped for a coffee at a place called Caribou Coffee! It was a place on a par with Starbucks, complete with free wi-fi! However notice the selection of washroom facilities they offered us!! (see pic!) Not really - they had the real things! Then down the road a ways, we came upon the back of truck you see pictured! Yup - Samaritan's Purse! That was cool enough, but then we noticed who was hauling the trailer!! Paul Brandt Trucking! Who is Paul [View Full Entry]

We're having one of those rare days of winter today. When you wake up and the trees are thick and heavy with frost. So beautiful. There's a heavy fog as well despite it not being that cold (in North Dakota terms) at degrees in the mid 20s. I was hoping for a little sun to poke through to make for some gorgoeous photos but the forecast states it's unlikely so heavy fog for the day is what I get to work with it. Headed out this morning to what caught my eye in the frost. Went straight to the Missouri River [View Full Entry]

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one of the prettiest places in North Dakota. I really had never gone to take photos of it during the winter months so with a nice, warm day of mid 40s on the forecast, I headed out to see what I could get for photos when there was a little snow still on the ground. During this time of year, many of the roads are closed in the Park because of ice and snow when you get into the very steep parts of the Park. However, the lower area is all open and accessible which still [View Full Entry]

I sit here thinking about the months to come and realize that I have less than four months left of life as I know it in mild Minnesota. Many thoughts run through my head, mostly of excitement, but there are some others of disbelief that I am actually going to be doing this! I wonder if I'll be different when I return and if/how this experience will change me. There is no doubt that some change will take place, after all, it is the land of the gods! It is a beautiful place full of history and rediscovery of things long [View Full Entry]

US#2 This has been a good road. It apparently has been greatly improved since the description in “Blue Highways” (copyright 1982) by William Least Heat Moon. He states: “Montanans call U.S. 2, paralleling the Canadian border all the way to Lake Huron, the High-line. The most desolate of the great east-west routes, it was two lanes of patched, broken, rutted, mind-numbing pavement running from horizon to horizon over the land of god-awful distance.” The road is now in good condition, smooth and straight. It is still a long road that stretches to the horizon. In [View Full Entry]

Obfuscator writes: We woke up comfortably on our hillside perch in TRNP - North. Snug as a bug and so forth. As usual, we needed to dry some of our gear. This is partly just an issue of morning dew, and partly an issue of condensation from our own breath on the interior. The moral of that story is basically that Gortex keeps moisture off you quite well, but it also retains some on the inside as well. Anyway, while we did that, we had some delicious shakes from the MRE’s, and then set off to explore some of the surrounding [View Full Entry]

Awoke to chilly temperatures in the upper 30s, but blue skies all around. I can deal with cold just not rain especially on a bike going 70 mph. Cruised down US HWY 2. Everything now is real flat, and just gets flatter. Crossed the Red River into Grand Forks, ND, home of the Fighting Sioux. Was amazed at the largest building I had seen on the plains and in North Dakota. It was the Ralph Englestad Arena, home of the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Hockey Team. I think they clearly love Hockey in North Dakota. Then continued West checking [View Full Entry]
