Geo: 43.0955, -79.0559Day 3 - Woke up to a light rain hitting the RV roof, so we did not hang around long. We packed up and drove to Kinzua Bridge State Park. In 1882, when the bridge was built, it was the tallest railroad bridge in the world. In 2003, a tornado took down the center span. Tragic, but it was awesome to see.We then drove on through Buffalo, NY and on to Niagara Falls. We will stay on the US side tonight and go to Niagara on the Lake tomorrow for Sheila's birthday.... read more

Geo: 43.0955, -79.0559Really just a one day report of a trip to Niagara falls. Having spent the morning catching up on e-mails and this blog we set out about 11 for Niagara, about 25 miles away. Peter managed not to spot the sign indicating the speed limit had dropped from 65 to 55 (nothing else seemed to slow down) and found himself being pulled overby a policeman. The policeman seemed a little crestfallen when a UK licence was produced and handed over a summons - which couldn't cope with UK postcodes - and grudgingly admitted it was all pretty meaningless.Never-the-less we proceeded at a more moderate pace to Niagara where we joined a tour round the attractions, the highlights of which were the elevator ride and boardwalk near the bottom of the American Falls and the ... read more

We left Geneva at 8:58 A.M. Blue skies appearing, 68 degrees. We drove on Interstate 90 through miles and miles and acres and acres of cornfields. Had to stop for diesel for first time, astounded at the price of fuel in NY state. We paid the most we've ever paid, $4.27. Noticed another teardrop for first time near Buffalo. We arrived at Niagara to brilliant sunshine , very warm. Walked first down to Horseshoe Falls and had our first glimpse of the "big falls." Pretty but our impression from this angle was "what's the big deal." After another 2 hours of walking and viewing from multiple angles, including the skywalk obnservation deck we now know it truly is a big deal and everyone should visit it at least once. The amount of water is staggering, 6,000,000 ... read more

Carla: Delete as appropriate: “I am astounded / amazed / bored / exasperated to find that the Holden Pilsworths have written yet ANOTHER instalment of their weekly blog”. This week the theme is lakes and also escape; from heat, flatness and thunderstorms. We loved Madison, which was an oasis of right-thinking in the mid-western desert (vegetarian food, organic supermarkets, green concern etc.), and it had four lakes, including Mendota the one Al, George and Ruby swum in, but we needed to get away from the daily temperatures of over 100F and the constant rumble of thunder in the distance. We drove north on Thursday afternoon with the idea of getting as close to Canada as we could without actually going across the border. If we put just a lake (Superior) between us and cooler climes then ... read more

After packing up and leaving Cedar Point behind, we made our way to our finally destination before Secaucus, and it wasn't a bad chose - Niagara Falls. On the way we stopped for lunch at Lake Eerie National Park and something amazing happened. The whole group got involved in a game of volleyball. There was always talk throughout the previous 9 weeks of playing a game or two, but all that ever happened was tossing the NFL ball around a couple of times. It started out with Joanna, Kristina, Annabel, Sarah, Mark and Zach starting to get a little game going, and before long, everyone apart from Sumi and Todd got involved. Proper positions were taken up, with everyone moving around one spot every point. It was great, even the diving around on the sand underfoot, ... read more

Great to make it to Niagara, near Buffalo NY, and see old friends Demaris & Whitey, and their delightful kids Jackson (8y) & Lilly (6y). A bit difficult having 2 young Jacksons in the same house, so our Jackson has been more commonly referred to by his nickname ('Twig'). Jackson took Twig to his elementary school and Twig enlightened his class about NZ, Kiwi life and where we've been on our world tour. Hopefully the local kids will now be able to perform the Haka in style and will all get up at 4am on Sunday morning to watch the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup final! As a treat, both families spent two nights at the 'Great Wolf Lodge' just over the Canadian border. The kids had a great time on the indoor water ... read more

Our final stop before re-entering Canada was to tour Niagara Falls, one of my bucket list pit-stops, albeit from the US side. We had decided to not travel Highway 401 along the north side of the Great Lakes, because of the volume of traffic, which meant using the US route along the south side of the lakes. I think Niagara Falls is spectacular no matter where it is viewed from, and I was able to capture some great photos, even though it was a cloudy day. Was a great way to finish off this part of the trip. ... read more

I swear it was South Park who took the piss out of New Yorkers for driving upstate to see the leaves change and fall off trees... I became one of those people to poke fun of and you know what, tease me all you like. I loved the next two weeks of my trip. As the landscape would be dominated by predominantly the maple leaf slowly but surely dying off to its feather-like descent towards its final resting place on the ground. After Boston it was time to test out my ability to do this trip on a budget… After buying a GPS - of course. I figured I had wasted at least half a tank in the first 5 days with the car just from wrong turns so I had to. GPS’ weren’t in stock ... read more

What a brilliant experience to have. We stayed with Ray at his B&B home about 2 miles from the falls and whilst there met a lovely German couple, Toby and Lea. We spent a full day walking devil's gorge, a 4 mile hike along the Niagara River. (Hike in English = a walk by the way). We were totally rewarded when we got to the end and seen the American falls, the smaller of the set of falls. We crossed it to see it from the other side and walked a little further to see the House-shoe falls, the larger of the two, which you can't quite see all of from the USA side. Matt and the German's decided to take the adventure of the cave of the winds and get even closer to the falls ... read more
