On our way...
Published: May 10th 2012North America » United States » New York » New York » Staten IslandWe're sitting in the Sky Club at JFK Airport waiting to board our flight to Athens. In order to make only one connecting flight from San Antonio, we ended up with a pretty long layover here - better than having a short layover and missing the flight or making the flight without our luggage. No matter how much advance planning I do to in order to make the night of packing go quickly, I always end up getting less sleep than I wanted/needed. Packing for a trip in the US is a piece of cake - if you forget something, there's always a pharmacy or department store near by. Packing for a long trip outside the US involves bringing some of the "routine" OTC drugs just in case you need them and making sure that you ... read more

Published: January 15th 2009North America » United States » New York » New York » Staten IslandI have been working straight for twenty months and I never had a vacation break as long as two weeks. My Mom and My Sis arrived from Manila a few weeks ago. I guess things have fallen into place because this was the best time to take a long break in New York with our relatives! From Bitter-Cold to Cold It was -20F when we left Chicago two days ago. We took the CTA from Evanston all the way to the Midway Airport, 2 luggage in tow. We checked in and boarded the plane that would take us to Baltimore. I remember the pilot say, "The temperature at destination is 30 degrees." Alas! Everyone in the place cheered hurray (Including me)! From Baltimore, we took another plane for Islip in Long Island, New York. Landing on ... read more
Staten Island - The Suburb Within New York City
Published: August 11th 2008North America » United States » New York » New York » Staten IslandBy Armando S. Sarlat "We'll have Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too. It's lovely going through the zoo." Manhattan Staten Island, also known as Richmond County, is one of New York City's five boroughs. The other four are Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and Brooklyn. It is the southernmost borough, just a 25-minute ride from lower Manhattan on the famous Staten Island Ferry. Many "Islanders", folks from other boroughs, and tourists alike enjoy the sea breezes of a round trip ferry ride through New York Harbor. It's great for picturesque views of Manhattan's skyline, and a close up view of The Statue of Liberty. Your destination from Manhattan is St. George on the North Shore of Staten Island. The Island is also accessible from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn via the Verrazano-Narrows, a double deck 12 lane suspension bridge. ... read more
Meeting Lady Liberty
Published: July 15th 2008North America » United States » New York » New York » Staten IslandFirst Time Riding the NY Subway! As early as 6:30am, my cousin, Sheila and I headed out of Midtown Manhattan for a day at Liberty Island and Ellis Island. We took the subway and ofcourse, I was excited to finally see for myself what people say is a confusing labyrinth of tunnels under Manhattan. We took the MTA New York City Subway, which Sheila looked up online last night. (She has moved to San Francisco that's why she needs a little refresher.) Trains were coded A, B, C or 1, 2, 3. And looking at the map online last night, I realize how much simpler my commuting life is in Chicago. First thing I noticed was a poster on the walls of the subway that said "Coat Drive". I noticed it because of an image of ... read more
New York City, how did that happen again ??
Published: December 15th 2007North America » United States » New York » New York » Staten IslandWell this wasn't in the original plan….. New York again!!! A second time in the USA and New York City in 2007 was never on the agenda, after going there in January with Daz, Mai and Alissa…. But during the middle of the year, when we were experiencing supposedly the wettest summer ever in the UK, I was chatting to Mum and Dad regarding their trip to Europe and what we would be doing when they arrived. Egypt was on the agenda as you all probably know by now, and they would be using their Frequent flyer points to do an around the world trip. It turned out that they had to make a 12 day stop in New York before getting the flight back to Australia. Qantas Frequent Flyers don’t make thing too easy on ... read more
