Zach and Maria came to our room @ 7:40 to get us for morning worship. Surprisingly, we were ready!!! It really is a treat to be treated like part of the family here @ the farm. Morning worship was a talk and comments by one of the local family. Such a treat to start the day with spiritual food. There is a legal case in Russia right now that threatens the right of the brothers and sisters to preach and could set a precedent for all of Europe. So the family has really been encouraged to pray for the brothers there. A little intimidating to learn all of the rules of eating - pass to the right, only drink water during the morning worship (not coffee-oops),.... After breakfast we went to the launch pad - the ... read more

We are not on the trail right now, however I do travel near the AT while driving my 18 wheeler. I was lucky enough to have a layover night near Unionville, NY. While on the trail this year CC and I spent a wonderful night at "The Mayor's House." He provides hikers a shower, laundry and two super meals asking nothing in return other than to share your hike with him. I popped in with a bag of dirty laundry and stakes for supper. To my surprise there were four southbound hikers spending the night. We put the stakes in the freezer and all shared fine baked chicken. Dick (The Mayor), Bill and Butch his two helpers were all happy to see a hiker return for just a friendly visit. It was not the trail, ... read more

My wife and I had the opportunity to spend a day at the Mohonk Mountain House just outside of New Paltz, NY, south of the Catskill Mountains. It is about 90 miles north of New York City. We were attending my mother-in-law’s wedding and were able to spend a great day of fun with friends and family. Truly, Mohonk (meaning “lake in the sky”), built around 1879, though the property dates Smiley family ownership back to 1869, with nearly 300 rooms, has a whimsical Victorian quality, much like coming upon Belvedere Castle in Central Park. The massive hotel rises from the lake’s edge, and is surrounded by trees as far as the eye can see (which on a clear day turns out to be many, many miles). We arrived at around nine in the morning and, ... read more

As some of you might know, after leaving Christies in San Diego we made a rather abbreviated tour of the southwestern US. It was a lot harder leaving San Diego than we had anticipated and getting back on the road was slow going. From the comfort of a couch, with hot food and running water, we made grandiose plans on how the remainder of the trip would unfold. Initially, we had planned to go as far as possible til the money ran out or it stopped being fun. It didnt really stop being fun per se, it just became a routine. The extraordinary became ordinary. All told, thats a nice problem to have from time to time, and I know that we will enjoy a similar affliction many times over again in the future. We headed ... read more

Too long have I lingered in front of the TV watching "educational programming". Ergo, Cliffhanger with Sly Stallone. Any serious enthusiasts of mountaineering or wilderness preparedness ought to view it as a basic tutorial. Also, man vs wild, another classic production- i mean, if you can build a fire to cook with, why not just eat raw reptiles? Makes sense to me. Ok, enough lies. Im getting antsy. Not enough time to really work, but too much time to just kill before we leave. Reading is occupying the little focus that I still have- Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer- a great movie and an equally impressive book- seems to resonate with many of the sentiments I have shared over the last several years. Its nice to reaffirm that you're not special or unique and that ... read more
