... read more

The City of Hudson is known for it's architecture. Established in the 1820s as the largest inland whaling port in the US by refugees from Nantucket, it began life as a copy of a New England seaport town. Rumor has it that some of the actual houses first erected were shipped in bundles from from the same mills and housewrights who built most of the old Nantucket houses. The remaining early houses certainly wouldn't be stylistically out of place on Nantucket's streets. Through the ups and downs of the nearly two centuries of its existence, the City has become home to a multiplicity of architectural styles, leading it to be dubbed "a museum of American Architectural style." Famed Photographer Lynn Davis did a series of architectural portraits of the buildings along the mile long Warren Street ... read more

Friday night (June 29th), we got to the boat late, after cleaning and packing up the house. Our new home until next May is considerably smaller than our house, so loading the boat was quite a challenge. We planned to take "a couple of hours" Saturday morning to finish stowing stuff away, then leave. Well, we had several friends pay us a visit on Saturday, and we didn't get stuffed stowed, so at about 3:30 we left anyway from Bronte Oakville for Oswego NY where we enter the Erie Canal. The weather didn't co-operate and we ended up spending Canada Day in Coburg, where they had a great Canada Day Celebration. On Monday , we crossed the lake to Oswego, and started the trip down the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal connects Lake Ontario to ... read more

Olana State Historic Site was founded by the 19th century Hudson River School painter, Frederick Church. The State of New York has recently dredged the pond that Church built and thinned out the vegetation, making it look more like the way Church designed the estate. Currently there is work going on at the house, so it is closed for tours. The place is quite scenic, however, and is worth the approximately 2-hour drive from New York City to visit.... read more

This part of Kingston used to be an amusment park and ferry landing. The park and the ferries are long gone, but the beach remains. I travel here quite often during lunch in off-season to watch the seagulls. The beach fronts the Hudson River and the gulls fly inland to avoid bad weather. I often meet nice people here, such as Joyce V., a former school teacher who once lived in New York City and now lives in Kingston. She comes to the Beach often to feed the gulls. ... read more

“The idol of today pushes the hero of yesterday out of our recollection; and will, in turn, be supplanted by his successor of tomorrow.” - Washington Irving Famous words by a famous man. Yet Washington Irving himself lives on in the psyche of America and his cottage is one of the Historic sites in the Hudson valley. Its called Sunnyside and is on the banks of the Hudson in a village called Tarrytown. Irving (1783 - 1859) is known as America’s first internationally famous author and is best known for “The legends of sleepy hollow” and Rip Van Winkle. In fact the Historic Hudson valley includes famous estates and mansions including the Rockefeller estate ( which we unfortunately couldn’t see as it shuts down for visitors in the beginning of November). Since the valley just happens ... read more
