We left Balmorhea at 8:30AM, CDT, I-10/20 split 9:00AM and continued on I-10. At 9:50 we changed to MDT; uhoh, now it’s 8:50 MDT. Paralleled the Mexican border/Rio Grande river for many miles and through El Paso at 10:30 MDT. Juarez Mexico close up, could see the border fence. Crossed the Rio Grande at 12:10, not so ‘Grande’ at this point. At 12:30 PM, MDT we were stopped by Border Patrol on I-10 in N.M. but not searched, waved on. Arrived at the “City of Rocks State Park” at 3:10PM, CDT, temp 103 degrees. (Hot Rocks) “A Dry Heat” lol Like a blow dryer in your face! PINOS ALTOS Placer gold was found at Pinos Altos a few miles north of Silver City, NM in 1860. A small gold boom quickly followed and dozens of miners rushed in to stake their claims. One of them was a young man named Thomas J. Mastin. Tom was well liked among the miners and became a leader of them. Roy Bean, and his brother Sam, operated a store there. Roy would later move to Texas, appoint himself justice of the peace at Langtry and set himself up as “The Law West of the Pecos”. The problem with the gold strike at Pinos Altos was that it was located on land that the Apaches called home. The Apache leader was an imposing figure named Mangas Coloradas. It was a name given him by Mexican enemies ... read more

CABALLO RESERVOIR TO FT. BAYARD TO SILVER CITY, NM Friday April 27, 2012 8:45 and it was 68 degrees and clear. Thankfully after rocking all night in the wind, it is clear and has stopped blowing this morning. Mileage at start was 24202. Started up in elevation going due west this morning on highway 152 toward Silver City. Quickly climbed up into the Black Mountain Range. Real trees at last!! You don’t realize how much you miss them when you’re driving through miles and miles of desert with only shrubs, bushes or just grassland. We drove through the interesting historical mining town of Hillsboro that had some really quaint buildings. It was founded in the 1870’s after gold and silver was discovered nearby. The town developed into an important mining and ranching center and ... read more

The visit to the Gila National Forest was great!!! We made camp at a cattle watering tank called Gwynn tank. It was a sweet little camp spot that was popular to me when i was hooting for owls a few years back. From there we made multiple trips biking, hiking, and motorbiking throughout the area. We saw all kinds of wildlife. Elk, Turkey, and Coyote were the norm but an interesting little beast was spied on our last day as we were headed out towards Silver City. A really hairy tarantula happened to be crossing the dirt road. Now i don't normally cringe at insects but this one was different!! Another spot we visited was the Gila Cliff Dwellings. It was amazing to see how native Indians lived so many years ago!!! ... read more

August 17, WednesdaySilver City to ? Today the plan is to head northwest out of Silver City through the Gila National Forest towards Eagar Arizona. I’ll be checking out campgrounds on the way and am not sure where I will end up at this evening. After I get to Eager I will head back East towards Socorro and then North to Albuquerque. At least that’s the plan. It will probably take 2 to 3 days to get to Albuquerque. I’ve had an enjoyable 2 days here in Silver City but I guess it’s time to get those wheels a turnin again. One thing I have learned very well in the past week and a half. When leaving a good size town and heading off into a National Forest or desert leave with your water containers and ... read more

August 16, Tuesday I took my truck by R&L around 10 and left it there to be fixed. They said they had a lot of other jobs but would try and expedite the work as I was from out of town and more or less stranded. I thanked them and walked back to the Motel 6. I rented a room for a second night and decided to make the best of it so got on the Corre Caminos Transit shuttle bus which takes you around the town for 75cents. It will pick up at a turnout right next to the Motel 6 and Macdonalds but I didn't know this and walked up the road a bit to a turnout there. It was nice to be able to look around without having to watch out you don’t ... read more

August 15 - Today drove into Silver City and after stopping at the MacDonalds there to send out emails and do a little homework I went up Hwy 15 towards the Gila Cliff dwellings but after fighting that rough and winding road and seeing a sign that said another 7 miles of steep incline, decided it just wasn’t worth tearing my truck up over. Another 7 miles down meant another 7 miles up coming back. So I let it go and went back on the much easier Hwy 34. The info I had looked up on it had told me it was better to go up 34 because it was so much a better route but I had opted on going up 15 for a more scenic route figuring on coming back on 34. A big ... read more

after we got into buckhorn campground, 3 more cyclists showed up. the climb from 3 way was very difficult. we were all tired, it took us 5 hours to climb 3000 feet, and go14 miles. we still had 31 miles to go. granted bob and mary had an anchor. they averaged about a mile quarter faster than me. bob says we can't call them keith waits anymore. we have to start calling them sam slows. but we made it to the top as a group, 6250 feet. we had all we wanted and were patting ourselves on the back. 45 miles and 4000 feet of vertical climbing. the 3 cyclists came from safford 80 miles and 7000 vertical feet of climbing. bob says they're all made of gristle. the next day we got up and climbed ... read more

we had a rest day in tempe. swam in the pool which was heated, and rested up for the mountains. left with the idea of stopping in superior, az. that would've left us with approximately 30 miles each day and about 2000 feeto of vertical climb for the day. we talked about trying to go on a globe. This would make for a 50 + mile day and about 4000 feet vertical climbing. it was sunday, and mary really wanted to go on because we also have to get through the tunnel, that was about a quarter mile long, and of course was uphill, about 4 percent grade. I voted to wimp out, but said I would go along if they both want to go the distance. I was out voted and off, or I should ... read more
