PINOS ALTOS Spanish Mexico had been mining in the area of Santa Rita del Cobre in New Mexico for a hundred years or so before Americans stumbled onto the scene and tried their hand at it too. The American effort there got underway in 1860. It was on land long being used as a homeland by the Chiricahua Apache. Their chief, Mangas Coloradas, or Bloody Sleeves, did not care for Americans in his neighborhood. One day he stopped by for a chat with the friendly intention of pointing out to the miners that there were much richer deposits a short distance to the west. He was talking about Morenci and Globe which were both fabulously wealthy deposits, but the miners wouldn’t listen to good advice when it was offered. Instead, they overpowered Mangas and whipped him ... read more

SHERIFF HARVEY WHITEHILL Harvey was born in Ohio in 1838 and stuck around there until he was 19 years old, then headed off to California Gulch, near what would later become Leadville in Colorado. He got there early enough to strike a fairly nice pocket of placer gold. Within a year he sold his claim for fifteen thousand dollars and then wisely left town before the new owners found out his claim was about played out. From there he ventured into New Mexico and like any prudent miner he kept right on prospecting until the money was all gone. In the meantime he had married a girl named Harriet Stevens, built one of the first homes in Silver City, and started up a boisterous family that eventually included ten youngsters. During those early years in Silver ... read more

The hotel we are staying in houses a number of workers. We know that a few are doing some kind of road work, as evidenced by their trucks and the equipment in the parking lot. Not sure how others may be employed. In any event, they were up before dawn and off to work, so we were awake early, as well. Not to say that they were noisy. They were not. But we are light sleepers in hotel rooms, and we heard their alarms go off and their trucks start up when they left. So, we made an effort to make use of that to plan ahead on our trip. Our plans are still in flux and I am not sure we made much progress. But at 8 AM we knew we had to get going, ... read more

We were up early again this morning, but for some reason it took us a while to get moving. Perhaps it was the great breakfast at La Quinta…better than average…cheese omelets and thin and delicately crispy bacon. Just ask Beamer. He had his share of both. We got on the road at 8 AM and attempted to follow the onboard GPS to I-20, which was not far from the hotel, but we missed the first turn and ended up having to find a place to turn around. Steve chose to drive down a side street and, by chance, it took us to a place I had read about but forgot to look for yesterday. The road led to UTPB (University of Texas at Permian Basin) and what did we find, purely by accident? A replica of ... read more

Another long day with 5 miles of hill up 5000 ft, ok some really good down hill but do not understand why uphill is getting harder and not easier. Frank shepards me so I do not get too far behind. Not impressed with campsite at Globe.on community play ground, one loo each for men and women but no doors, hot water nor showers. Grim. Slept well but woke to sleet aneed rain Left at 7.30 and severe uphill in rain was real eye wake up call. After early climb mostly flat thru Apache Indian reservations. Stopped for hot chocolate near Geronimo just to keep warm. Signs of chronic deprivation everywhere.. Continued to Safford but on arrival campsite closed so decamped to cheap motel which was welcome. As too windy to cook went to local Mexican takeaway. ... read more

Greetings everyone, and thanks for checking in with us. It's been a little while since our last update, and we've eeked out quite a few miles since Chama. We have a lot of photos that we'd like to share, including ones from our passage through the southern Rockies, into northern New Mexico's red rock desert, then into the stunning rattlesnake haven of El Malpais ('Badlands'), then through the curiously but appropriately named hamlet of Pie Town, through the wind blasted San Agustin Plains, back up into the beautiful and remote Gila (pronounced HEE-la) National Forest, and finally down into the Spanish-western influenced town of Silver City at the northern reaches of the Chihuahuan Desert. Due to the remoteness of where we've been over the last week or two, we've been camping a lot more, often against ... read more

As we were silently walking through the canyons along the dry riverbed, I was visited by our 7 and 8-year-old selves. I kept having remembrances of exploring the cornfields out behind our house. I had the realization that we are still those little girls with the same adventurous spirit, only time has moved forward and that spirit has brought us here, exploring lands much further beyond our backyard. We still take the time to stop and examine things in the mud; we are still pocketing rocks that we deem "cool" and we still have a sense of endless wonder and amazement of the natural world around us. This got me thinking, maybe time isn't what changes us. I am still that 7-year-old girl. I just haven't had the time or patience to listen to her in ... read more

Hola from New Mexico! We are writing to you all from a McDonald's in Silver City. (Thanks again, Mom, for the gift card!) Madison and I let go of a sigh of relief when we walked into this McDonald's to see several other transients with their laptops and no NO LOITERING signs. It can be difficult occasionally to find places to hang out when we need a break from van life. We've relied heavily on the Big 3: McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, and Walmart. Walmart has been our saving grace - we sleep in its parking lots every night. They actually invite travelers to stay. Most Walmarts even provide 24 hour roaming security. Thanks Walmart! So, we've come a long way since Amarillo. We traveled through snow and heavy fog to get to Santa Fe. On the ... read more

Bisbee, Arizona and Silver City, New Mexico We visited these two old mining towns that have re-invented themselves as artists’ communities, on succeeding days and were charmed by both. Neither of these towns did we know anything about before we saw them on the route we were following and did a small bit of research and thought they would be worth stopping at and exploring; we feel like we ‘discovered’ them and that is one of the reasons for this adventure! Bisbee, population about 7000, sits on the slope of a narrow gorge about 30 miles north of the Mexican border (and 25 miles south of the famous town of Tombstone). The mine ceased operations in 1975 after producing over 6 billion dollars’ worth of metals, mostly copper, since it opened in the 1880s. At its ... read more

Please bear with us there could be pictures that are of no interest to you. These are for our personal friends Bob and Mary Nelson that lived in Pinos Altos). We woke up to a magnificent morning today. It was 60 degrees at 6:00a.m. and we saw some Gambel’s Quail and Jack Rabbits while drinking coffee. (see pictures) Headed up to Silver City and stopped at the Information Center where they had lots of history related stories for us. The woman on duty talked about the cliff dwellings and copper mines (Grant Co./ Silver City is the richest county in NM). Also we were told to check out the “Old City” that has much restoration in progress. Just outside the center was a log cabin that was donated by Ron Howard, used in the movie ... read more
